Colorful Half Hexie Finish
I have a colorful finish to show you today. This half hexie quilt has been sitting in my stack of UFOs for far too long. Friday was its day to move from the UFO stack to done.
I thought I’d tease you a bit with the fun photo of all the threads used in this quilt. It reminds me of all the 2018 Aurifil Ambassadors who were introduced this past week. Did you see them? I enjoyed seeing so many creative quilting friends that I follow in the group!
Now, before you get all excited thinking I did all this amazing quilting, you need to know that I kept it simple. Wavy simple.
I have spent so much time thinking about how to quilt this quilt. I’d pull it out, ponder, get overwhelmed and put it away. Should I do quilting in each half hexie? Do an overall design? It was complete FOFM (fear of free motion)! I thought I had something figured out the other day and when I pulled it out to work on it, Then I completely changed my mind. In the end, I realized this would have been a great quilt to practice my free motion quilting; the colors are so bold all the quilting gets lost! Ah well, the things you learn along the way, right?
The Missouri Star Sashed Half Hexie Quilt
This quilt measures 24″ x 30″ and is made using Missouri Star’s half hexie template. Here’s the link to Missouri Star’s tutorial. I used a jelly roll of Calypso Batiks by Moda and black fabric from my stash. The backing and binding are batiks I had on my shelf.
The top went together quickly, and then I added the border using leftover strips from the jellyroll.
I decided to use multiple colored threads to do the quilting, and just did my usual wavy lines.
Here’s another photo, that shows more of the thread colors.
At first I was a bit disappointed in my choice of the wavy lines. However, the quilt is so bold and has so much movement, the quilting gets a little lost even with the different colors of thread. I’m happy with it now.
I found this backing without having any of the quilt top fabric samples with me. It matches up pretty well, I think! No reason why I shouldn’t put bold on the back too, eh?
The binding is a black batik with muted colors that match the tones of the quilt top. I didn’t have any solid black in my stash, so I was happy that this worked.
It’s time to post this finish on my Instagram feed once again, now that it’s really all finished!

Wow, Half Hexi turned out great!

It’s gorgeous, but I don’t get what makes it “half hexie.” Can you explain? Or is it just the block name someone gave it?
piecefulwendy
If you look at the colored parts of the block, you’ll see that their shape is half of a hexagon, which makes it a half hexie.

Really, really fun and wild. I think this would have made me sit and stare for a long time before quilting it too. No matter what you quilted it wouldn’t show off the quilting much so your choice was good not to spend too much time quilting it. Does she have you make one very long strip and then cut into sqs.? Or is there a lot of waste? It looks like stained glass.
piecefulwendy
I can’t recall what precut she used in the video. I used a jelly roll because I had it in hand and it worked with the template. Not much waste, but I did have left over strips because I didn’t use the whole jelly roll.

WOW, that certainly is colourful. Well done on another finish. The quilting is perfect for this quilt. I know that feeling ” I’d pull it out, ponder, get overwhelmed and put it away” all too well.
piecefulwendy
Thank you! Glad to have it done!

So colorful and pretty, Wendy! Love the quilting. Feel no guilt! It looks great and it’s finished!!! The backing–wow!!! And I love how you did that border, too.

Thanks, Nancy!

Hi Wendy,
I just had to giggle to myself about your pondering the quilting method. I am in the same place – always with the quilter’s paralysis. Anyhoo – this is a great little mini! I love the fabrics!! I have that mini-hexi ruler that we haven’t done a darn thing with. Maybe someday, sooner than later, maybe this will get us motivated to make this and use the ruler! I think it turned out fabulous. Happy Monday! ~smile~ Roseanne

Hope you do use the ruler soon! The pattern is really fun and easy to make!

My eyes, my eyes :-p So much brightness, it is almost blinding. But in a good way. I love everything about this quilt.
piecefulwendy
Haha! Thanks, Preeti!
Jayne
That is one bright and beautiful quilt! Love the design! Your thread colors are perfect and so is the quilting. I have the hardest time deciding how to quilt something…you got it right!
piecefulwendy
Thank you, Jayne!

Wow! it is wonderful! I immediately went to see the tutorial. but I would probably never have looked at this quilt, with the fabrics used in it.
I like the way you pieced the borders too.
piecefulwendy
Thank you, Marie! Hope you give the pattern a try!
Tish
Wendy, this is beautiful! It looks like a stain glass window, all those bright colors framed in black. Totally go wild with the backing anytime you can…I do 🙂 I think those wavy lines stitched with those yummy spools of Aurifil was a perfect choice. I know there is a free motion bird inside you and we’ve got to set it free. It wants to fly and I promise we will not let you fall.
piecefulwendy
Thank you, Tish! I’m going to get free motion going at some point. I’m determined.

I just love stained glass quilts! This one is a stunner, Wendy. So bright and bold and graphic. You’re right that the fabrics would overwhelm pretty much any kind of quilting, so wavy lines are the perfect accompaniment. Congratulations on such a wonderful finish 🙂

Thanks, Louise!

Wow, this is good looking. I like all the bright batiks.
piecefulwendy
Thank you, Cherie!
Lisa
What a fun and colourful quilt…and a great ufo bust. The wavy lines look great.

Thank you, Lisa!

This is beautiful, the colours just glow!

Thank you, Sandra! 😊

These bright half hexies make me smile. The busy-ness of the prints/back will be your friend when you decide to try FMQ. How about a muslin sampler that could work as a table top pad? No one sees it but you, but you get to work on it
piecefulwendy
Oh, great idea! Thanks!
piecefulwendy
Thanks, Kathleen!
Zafira @Zarkadia
What a beautiful colored quilt! Really impressive!
piecefulwendy
Thank you!
Dione @ Clever Chameleon
I like yours better than the original. 🙂 Yours has a real stained glass look to it, which makes the intense brightness seem just right. 🙂
piecefulwendy
Thank you, Dione!

Beautiful quilt ! I watched the MSQC video but still have some questions…if you used a jelly roll and not 10 in. squares where did you position the template? Did you make a strip set with sashing in between then cut with template? What size did you cut each finished square before putting them together?
Thanks
Chantal Dunlop
Just find your beautiful half hexi quilt. I bought the MSQC pattern , i want to do a table runner and find the jelly roll size better for my project, my question is: what size half hexi template did you use with the jelly roll? Thank you for your help.
