Creating a Quilted Legacy

Creating a quilted legacy – what comes to mind when you think about that? Today we are remembering and honoring a quilter who found joy in creating a quilted legacy for many charities.

Paula Budinger, a fellow quilter who blogged at Paula B Quilts, passed away on February 8th. Though she had been blogging since 2015, I only met up with her in the last year or two. Today several of us are joining in the Creating a Quilted Legacy Blog Hop to honor Paula and remember her creative spirit.

In the short time I got to know Paula, I enjoyed her posts and seeing what she was creating. She had a knack for trying new things and following the nudge of “I wonder if this would work” ideas that came to her. She loved bright colors, so her posts were often colorful and fun.

Paula enjoyed making charity quilts, something that is a bit new to me. So to honor and remember her, I chose to make this colorful baby quilt and will donate it to Jack’s Basket

My charity quilt for the Creating a Quilted Legacy Blog Hop - piecefulthoughts.com

I used a bundle of fat quarters I purchased during the 2018 Blogger Bundle series from Needle & Foot, where several quilters curated Blogger Bundles for Bernie to offer in her shop. This particular bundle was curated in May 2018 by Jayne of Twiggy & Opal (no, I didn’t plan to use the May 2018 bundle in May 2020, but it’s fun that it worked out that way). The quilt pattern used is the Bundle Buster from Quilting Jetgirl, which is a perfect quilt pattern for charity quilts. By the way, both Needle & Foot and Quilting Jetgirl are offering prizes for this blog hop, which you’ll see at the end of this post.

The pattern goes together very quickly, and uses the fat quarters with very little waste left over. The pattern is also very versatile as far as size. This quilt is 40-1/2″ square, a baby quilt size. The pattern has directions for baby, lap and throw, but can easily be increased to queen or king.

For the quilting, I stitched radiating lines coming from the center, using Aurifil 50 wt. thread in Lemon Ice.

The quilt backing is a black and white dot that I had in my stash. It compliments the quilt top well, and gives a better peek at the quilting. The binding is a pink Grunge from my stash.

Here are the quilt specifics:

  • Quilt Size: 40.5″ x 40.5″
  • Quilt Top: May 2018 Blogger Bundle from Needle & Foot, curated by Twiggy & Opal
  • Backing: Black/White dot from my stash
  • Binding: Pink Grunge
  • Batting: Hobbs 80/20
  • Thread for Quilting: Aurifil 50wt. Lemon Ice (#3910)
  • Charity Chosen: Jack’s Basket

Lovely quilt Wendy, I love how you quilted it, I have never thought to use radiating lines like that, and it works so well. I’m sure it will be very well received. Thank you so much for participating in the hop for Paula, she is greatly missed.

I love how you finished your quilt: great stitching, backing, and binding to tie it all together into a fun little quilt. I bet it’s even cuter in real life. I miss touching fabric and quilts! Nothing beats a visit to a shop or show in person. But for now I’m enjoying the blog hops. I love the idea of honoring a generous quilter.

Such a lovely tribute to Paula’s memory, Wendy, so well articulated. She would absolutely love the quilt you made and the fabrics you chose. I love it, too, and I’m going to check out that pattern! Be safe and stay well!

  • Diann Bottrell

That is so cute, Wendy! I love the bundle of fabric – especially that leaf print. The pattern looks like it goes together quickly, too. Perfect for a Jack’s Basket quilt!

What a cute baby quilt for a wonderful charity. Paula is smiling down on all the wonderful quilts being made in her honor!

  • Carol Collier

Love your quilt — will be a treasure for someone!! This is a great way to honor a special lady!

  • Rochelle Summers

A wonderful way to honor a special quilter. The quilt is lovely and the quilting is beautiful. Thank you for sharing.

  • Maureen

What a cute quilt! I like the way you quilted it. I liked Paula, too. It was a little sad to have the last Endeavourers Reveal without her.

  • Nancy Bekedam

Love the quilt! Love the fabrics! Love the quilting! Love the backing! Love the donation to JB! Wonderful!!!

  • Janine @ Rainbow Hare

This is a beautiful quilt and a great way to remember Paula. I didn’t know her for very long but I really enjoyed being in the Endeavourers with her and visiting her blog and we were all very shocked and sad to hear that she had passed. I think this legacy blog hop is a wonderful idea.

Hi Wendy! I didn’t know Paula or read her blog. But I can imagine that she is very, very happy knowing about this blog hop in her honor. Can you even imagine her good work continuing on without her input? Like a snowball, gathering speed traveling down a hillside, spreading charity quilts to those in need. I can’t think of a better remembrance. Your quilt is lovely and I am certain that a sweet baby and family will feel all the love you’ve sewn into this beauty. This is such a heartwarming blog hop! ~smile~ Roseanne

I love those fabrics, and those colorful leaves and their pops of color are fabulous! I’m really curious how you did hte radiating lines quilting. Did you start in the center for all of them, or draw lines across the entire quilt that all went through the center? This is what I want to do for my Centered but I’m not sure how to do it.

  • txquiltgal

I can’t stop looking at your quilt! Made a nice sized quilt too. That radiating quilting really sets it all off beautifully, I’m going to give that a try sometime soon.

  • Needle and Foot

This is wonderful Wendy! I knew that was a blogger bundle soon as I saw the picture but wasn’t sure whose it was! I have the bundle buster pattern both in my files as well as in the shop for sale. I want to try it now. I have loads of fat quarters collected and this would be a fun way to use them. The radiating lines (or a spiral) work well with the squared/rectangle pattern of the fabrics. Well done and Paula loves it, I am sure!

Love that little quilt…so bright and happy! And we all need that at this time. I am also touched that you are having a linking party in honor of someone who did so much for the quilting world. A truly great way to celebrate her gifts to all of us and to give everyone such inspiration. Thank you!

How cool is it that you are also into mixed media and Zentangles, of all things!! I taught a class on Zentangles many moons ago and still have some of my ATC’s (Artist Trading Cards) from that period. Nice to know someone else who is into paper AND fabric! Thanks for sharing your site! Glad to have found you!

  • Kathy E.

I have the same bundle of fabrics from Bernie’s shop and they make a great baby quilt! This is a lovely tribute to Paula and knowing a sweet baby will snuggle into your quilt is heart-warming!

That’s a great little quilt! Some new little someone will love it! I didn’t know Paula well, but her comments to me were always encouraging.

  • Patricia Evans

This lovely little quilt will delight some family through Jack’s Basket and is a wonderful way to honor a friend. I sent 2 quilts to Jack’s Basket last year as part of Hands2Help.

  • Paula

This blog hop is a wonderful way to remember Paula B. Thank you for participating and sharing your quilt with us.

  • Sue Hoover

Your quilt for Jack’s IS the perfect size. 40.5″ square means the back doesn’t have to be pieced! When making baby quilts, I try very hard to keep within that size. The fabrics used are very pretty and some baby will be lucky to have all this love.

  • Flashinscissors

A beautiful quilt and I love your quilting! I find quilting the hardest part of quilting ….. one could use any design one wants, but to choose the best is so hard!!
This Hop was a wonderful way to pay tribute to Paula!

I enjoyed reading Paula’s blog on occasion. She seemed to be a very warm person. Your quilt is very bright!

  • JanineMarie

Wendy, I think Paula would be delighted with this quilt–the colors, fabric patterns, design and recipient–and especially that it represents the combined creativity of several quilters. It’s a wonderful way to honor your memories of her and her legacy. I miss her blog posts and comments.

  • Mary Elizabeth O'Toole

What a fun combination of colours and fabrics. Great use of your fat quarter bundle for sure. A lovely way to create a legacy.

  • Danette

Such a wonderful quilt! And a wonderful charity to donate to, also. I will have to try to participate next year for a charity quilt.

  • Joni

Such a happy, bright quilt finish for one of my favorite charities. I love your quilting, it really gives it dimension.

  • Kathleen McCormick

I love this quilt and the fact that it was a blogger bundle really makes it fun! I should make my own blogger bundle (did just get a few things from Bernie). So sweet this whole tribute is; I don’t think I ran into her blog, but what a lovely thing to do!

  • Janice Holton

I’m enjoying a Saturday morning happy and cozy inside my house while the wind is whipping wildly round outside. What better way to spend it than visiting everybody on the blog hop. This pattern is RIGHT up my alley for making a baby quilt. I’m going to have to keep this in mind! Thank you so much for participating in our memorial for Paula! I am so pleased at the great participation!

  • Kathy Hills

Jack’s Baskets is fortunate to be receiving your beautiful quilt. What a nice way to pay tribute to a fellow quilting blogger.

  • Beth Talmage

This quilt will surely be featured in a lot of baby photos! What a sweet gift to a family that will benefit from a loving gesture–very much in the pattern of Paula B.
