2020 Monthly Color Challenge Quilt
I have my 2020 Monthly Color Challenge quilt top to show you today. This is my second year participating in the Monthly Color Challenge hosted by Patterns by Jen. This year, Jen used birds as her inspiration for each monthly block, and what a pretty variety of blocks there were!
One of my favorite bird-related movies is The Big Year. If you’ve seen it, you might recall the scenes where the birders get a notice that a specific bird has been seen at a certain location, and everyone scrambles to get to there for prime viewing. When Jen notified those of us that the finished quilt link up was today, I was just like one of those birders in the movie. I hadn’t even thought about the layout of my blocks, so I was scrambling to get it finished. There were no feathers flying, but the thread and needle definitely were!
Jen has a fantastic layout design to finish the blocks. You can see that layout here if you are like me and haven’t started piecing your top yet. I love the pixelated design and how the colors dance around the blocks. This was the layout I was planning to do, but I didn’t get the fabric ordered, so I had to take another flight path; something simpler and faster.
My quilt top finished at 48″ x 64″ and the blocks are laid out in the order they were made, beginning with January’s block in the upper left corner. I used a black P&B Textiles fabric called Suede that I had in my stash for the sashing and border of the blocks and quilt. The sashing strips were cut at 2.5 inches. the border pieces are 4.5 inches wide. I decided to make the blocks “hop” a little, just like the birds out my window hopping from one branch to another.
2021 Monthly Color Challenge
Jen is hosting another year of the Monthly Color Challenge, this year offering two sizes of blocks. The inspiration for this year’s challenge is fruits and veggies. You can find all the information for the challenge right here. It would be great fun to have you sew along with me!
Thanks for taking a peek at my 2020 Monthly Color Challenge quilt. Jen is hosting a 2020 Monthly Color Challenge Quilt Show over at Patterns by Jen. I hope you stop over and see the other 2020 Monthly Color Challenge quilts.
Thanks for stopping by! Happy stitching!

I like your flight path, a lovely top!

I like your finish, especially the middle row popping ahead of the others. It made me think of geese flying in formation. Don’t you love how black makes all the colors pop?

Love the thought you put into your layout – hopping birds indeed – and it finished at a nice size. I like that black “suede”. It looks a little Grunge-y.

I love the off-set block layout of your quilt. It adds a nice touch; and that Suede fabric is one of my favorite “solids.”
Barbara
That turned out so pretty. I like how you’ve off-set the blocks.

This is a great finish and fun to see the blocks offset. I like, too, that you did it in the order in which they were published.
karenfae

There must be a combination of joy, excitement, and relief when you finish a project that you’ve had going for a year. I’m such a check-off-the-list girl, I don’t know how I’d do. I suppose you count each one as “done” each month.
I like the gray/black background and love that the center column is a row higher than the ones beside it. Nice.

I guess I was having a brain fart the other night as I was thinking this was that other challenge you have done, was that Endeavors? Anyway this is fun and bright and I like the offset of the rows giving it a bit of it’s own character.

ooooh la la (as my granny used to say) what a lovely quilt. It is so fresh. The monthly colours pop out beautifully from the background and I think that the staggering of the columns is very clever

Love this! I like the layout you’ve chosen.

I like where your flight path took you, Wendy! The way you offset the center column of blocks makes your quilt top interesting! I haven’t been inspired to do anything with these blocks yet, but you’ve given me something to think about. Happy Friday!

A beautiful flimsy. Black is always a wonderful way to make the blocks shine. Congratulations on meeting this goal.

Hi Wendy! I love the little hop twist you added to your quilt top. The black sashing sets off each block so nicely. It looks kind of Grunge-ish or marbled which adds an additional interest as well. {{Hugs}} Aren’t you happy you have the top finished already?! Look great. ~smile~ Roseanne

That black textile sashing and border fabric really sets off your colorful blocks. I’ll have to check out The Big Year someday. It sounds like a fun movie.

One block a month makes such a beautiful quilt. I think your layout and sashing color makes each block stand out and shine.

Yes! Good “hopping birds” layout. You’ve convinced me. I’m joining in this year’s Monthly Color Challenge.
