A Finished UFO
I finally have a finished UFO to share with you today. I have been ignoring my UFOs while I am creating more UFOs? Anybody with me on that?
Since I have covered fall quilts (there may be a few more), I decided to jump ahead to Christmas. I have plans for where I want to hang this, so I decided to grab the moment and get ‘er done.
The kit for this runner was given to me by my nephew and his wife several years ago. I’ve had the top done, but wasn’t quite sure how to quilt it with the wool applique. Big stitches came to me the other day, and just like that, I was ready to finish this UFO.
I started by quilting in the ditch around the Santa motifs and the inner borders. Then I began big stitching in the backgrounds of the motifs, without a plan. I just stitched what I thought might work. Some parts are better than others! Here are close up photos so you can read the stitching.
For the stitching, I used Aurifil Lana wood thread. It works so well with the flannels and homespun fabrics in the piece. I’m trying to find other excuses to use this thread.
For the stitching in the outer border, I used gold, red, and green Valdani threads, alternating them around the border.
The binding fabric is a fun design by Kathy Schmitz. Wish I had more of it!
And that’s my finish! It feels so good to have a finished UFO.
Linking up today with Tish for her UFO Busting Linky Party, Sarah at Confessions of a Fabric Addict and Kathleen for TGIFF.

Hi Wendy! This is so darn cute and so darn YOU. I just saw something on Pinterest today and it made me think of you – something similar to this. I just adore the big stitches, and that thread has the perfect amount of body to make it stand out and not hide. Perfection! And now you can enjoy it this upcoming season. ~smile~ Roseanne

That is so adorable, Wendy! I love the Santas and all the plaids. Big stitch quilting was the perfect solution for this little piece!

Great job on that wall hanging, Wendy! It’s charming and, while the image is charming, it’s that big stitch quilting that turned it into a treasure.

That big stitch quilting is looking really good. I really like the background behind Santa. This was the perfect project for big stitch quilting.
