A Little Christmas Sewing Fun
I had to sneak in a little Christmas sewing fun last week. I had pulled out some Christmas fabric scraps, auditioning them for another project. All plans went in a completely different direction when I discovered that I could fussy cut one of the prints, as you can see in this sneak-peek photo from last week.
I cut out four of those little cups and a bunch of half-square triangles in red and green. They made up four cute little star blocks.
The blocks were 8-1/2 inches unfinished. I added 2-1/2 inch sashing between the blocks, and the little center block are two leftover HSTs sewn together to make an hourglass block. The outer borders were also cut at 2-1/2 inches. The finished quilt measures 22-1/2 inches square.
For the quilting, I decided to do some free motion loops. It was easier to do than I expected, and my free motion is improving maybe just a bit. I made sure to use a light thread, though, so you can’t inspect it too closely – LOL! I’m still working on getting the speed and stitch length to work together consistently.
Here’s another peek at the blocks and the quilting.
I used the stocking print for the quilt back, as well. It is a print from the Riley Blake Christmas Traditions line. As I was cutting the fabric, I was trying to remember what other project I used it for. I had to go back and find this post – from December last year! Maybe I’ll save the last bit for next December – haha!
I don’t have any information on any of the other fabrics since they were just small cuts from my stash. For quilting, I used Aurifil 50 wt thread in Sea Biscuit (#6722).
This little quilt was a definitely a little Christmas sewing fun for an afternoon or two. I don’t know what I will do with it, whether I’ll keep it or gift it. In the meantime, I’ll just enjoy it.

” a little Christmas sewing fun for an afternoon or two” That’s part of the season, too – these times of thematic sewing **for fun** in between the ‘required’. Your whimsical spur of the moment project seen here reflects the spirit of the season as well as your refreshed spirit in the midst of the season…whew a bit wordy, I know!

What a pretty quilt, and your FMQ looks great! Love the fussy cuts, and I enjoyed the re-read of last year’s post where you used that wonderful stocking fabric. And I saved the recipe for the lime dessert, which I failed to do last year, so thanks for that link!

Your bit of Christmas stitching turned out beautifully. It’s fun to have a quick and fun project in between all the longer term projects.

Happy holiday sewing and that little quilt is too cute. It’s amazing what a few leftover pieces of fabric can inspire you to do.

cute project and it doesn’t look like it took a lot of time and the way you quilted it doesn’t detract from the design which has remained the star of the show!

What a nice little quilt. I love the fabric and the fussy cutting. Your quilting continues to improve. That Riley Blake fabric is so nice. I like the idea of pulling it out every December for another project. Congratulations.

I love how you fussy cut out the cups, and isn’t it fun how a plan can change when something fun like that becomes obvious? I think your loop free motion quilting looks great!

I have been thinking of doing something like that with a few small leftovers from panels. Yours sure has a nice Christmas vibe to it! Good job on those loops too;)

What a fun little quilt! You made great use of your Christmas fabrics. I was thinking about your FMQ just yesterday, and I’m inspired by you! Maybe I’ll give it a go again during 2024. Your stitching turned out very nice.

These little ‘just gotta make this’ projects are so satisfying, aren’t they? Too funny that the backing is the same that you used on in December fun project last year!
