A Little Irish
A Little Irish is the name of my piece for the Project Quilting Challenge 15.6 – Irish Chain. I racked my brain trying to come up with something clever that was a spin off of an Irish Chain block, but had no luck. So I decided to go a little green with my project, and make something with a small Irish Chain quilt block.
I made a little 8″ project bag from some green scraps, using the pattern in Sotak Handmade’s book, That Handmade Touch, as a guide. The little Irish Chain blocks are 2 inches unfinished. I used a variety of green scraps, and strip pieced them. They are just a bit wonky, which I like. The most difficult part of this project was cutting the clear vinyl – it’s a challenge to see that clear vinyl under my ruler – but it all worked out. The hot pink zipper adds a little pop of color because I didn’t have a green zipper in the right color. And I’ve been wanting to use that green stripe for an age – I love striped binding!
The back of the project bag is a green blender fabric I had in my stash. The quilting is a simple grid, stitching in the ditch. I used a light green thread for the quilting. The batting is fusible fleece fused to the back of the Irish Chain block. The binding was sewn to the front of the project bag and then hand-stitched to the back.
Irish Chain is the final challenge for Project Quilting Season 15. I have completed each challenge this season, and thoroughly enjoyed each one. If you’d like to see them, here are the links to each one.

That’s adorable. I’m kind of sorry I missed the last two challenges. The Irish chain is one of my favorite traditional quilt blocks.

I love it!😍

This is so cute! The stripe binding and pink zipper make it great 🤩 How was sewing on vinyl? I didn’t think about how tricky cutting would be.

What a sweet little bag! I love Irish chains, but doubt I’ll make any at 2 inches. 😀 Great striped binding and I love the pop of pink. You’ve done really well with the challenges!

I’m with you–I LOVE striped binding! (That’s one of the things I watch for on clearance racks, striped fabrics. I guess that’s going about it backwards but whatever!). Super cute little pouch. Irish chains are simple but I just love them.

I like it and the black white strip is great with it.

Well, not isn’t that a clever little bag! You know I’m always on the look out for the next clever little bag! (The Japanese Rice Bag is my most current go-to, but it will be hard to replace my ever-favorite Holland Pouch!

Oh, what a fun and handy choice to make this week. I love the striped binding. I’m hoping I can get my project for the week done in time. Not only did I choose a complicated thing to piece, but I came up with a really ambitious quilting plan. We’ll see if I can get it done! ha!

This is darling. I’ve made this from Svetlana’s book a few times, but yours is extra special with that small patchwork! Good for you for meeting all the challenges!

Congratulations on your PQ Challenge bag. It is really nice. I love the variety of green scraps you used. That pink zipper really does set it off and the binding is wonderful. I’ve yet to try sewing with vinyl so I admire your grit.

This is a very neat pouch. From where I am sitting it looks like it involved some tricky piecing and stitching.

I love making project bags similar to this. My last one for PQ 15.3 Inside Out, was 16” square. Itty bitty nine patches are best strip pieced, and still can go a bit wonky! But it’s all good. I need to check for Svetlana’s book. I like her blog!
