Another Open Up Box Pouch
I have another Open Up Box Pouch to show you today. I’ve been meaning to get this posted, but lately all I’ve done is go from one appointment to another, so I haven’t been sewing or posting. I hope to change that next week!
You can see my first Open Up Box Pouch in this post. You can find the pattern for the Open Up Box Pouch by Minki Kim here.
This time around, I am making the pouch for BigJ as a first aid kit for his truck. He requested gray with red plus blocks. I was going to show you more steps along the way as I constructed this pouch, but I only remembered to snap a photo of the quilt sandwich (above) before I constructed the pouch.
I had to guess a bit on the placement of the red plus signs; it worked out okay, I think. I also used a zipper with just a single zipper pull, rather than the double zipper pull on my previous bag. It works just fine with just one pull. You can see that I did some straight-ish line quilting. It was a bit of a challenge to cut dark gray fabric on a gray cutting mat on an overcast day with not enough lighting in my temporary quilt room. My quilting lines are a little off, too, but I decided it will work. I’m grateful that BigJ isn’t too fussy.
My pouches don’t turn out as crisp and beautiful as Minki Kim’s, but I sure enjoy the pattern. Most of the little glitches are just some fine tuning I need to do and have nothing to do with the pattern.
Here’s how it looks when open (side view):
And here is the view looking down into the pouch. It opens nice and wide, easy to reach in and grab what you need.
This pouch would be a great gift idea for a graduate – those celebrations are right around the corner! It is such a versatile pouch, and could be put to use in so many ways. I’m sure I’ll have to make another Open Up Box Pouch soon!

I bet BigJ loves it – I sure do! I really like the gray with the red crosses, and your quilting is perfect for it. You are the Queen of pouches!

What a fun bag, it’s almost too cool for a first aid kit. He’ll definitely have one of the most stylish first aid kits around.

Great pouch for BigJ. It will fit the need very well. I like the wide opening easy to get things in and out. Happy Easter to you both!!

I think your quilting looks straight as can be! Another cute bag, and yes they would make great grad gifts!

That looks great to me, Wendy! I didn’t realize there were zippers with double pulls – where do you find them? I bet BigJ will get a lot of use out of this one, and pretty soon your kids will each want one, too!

Cute! I like your fabrics.

Hmmm – nothing about the quilting (or any of this pouch) look ‘off’ to me. Don’t be critical of your work!! It is great and the Red Cross for the first aid patch is perfect!!

There really are some times when every day is another appointment for one thing or another. I hope everything is okay and that things settle down enough that you’ll have more quilting time again soon. The wide open pouch looks so handy. What a great addition to your vehicles for emergency supplies.

Love it! 🙂

Those pesky appointments sure do get in the way of sewing and quilting. Great job on the pouch. What kind of supplies have you put in the pouch in your car? How much does it hold. I think the red crosses are an excellent idea. And I understand the challenge of cutting that dark fabric against a dark cutting board. I finally bought a white one to use with dark fabric. Don’t like the brand as well but it does the job.

At this point, I imagine you are all through those dang appointments. Hope all is well. I love BigJ’s Open Up Box Pouch. I can’t see anything wrong with your quilting…looks perfect to me and I am sure more perfect to him! I think this may need to go on my make list….love the open wide nature of it!

Running to appointments can be quite exhausting! Of course, when my husband was out in Alberta, I had my long overdue ophthalmologist appointment. All okay good for another year! Hope you get some similar good news. I love this second pouch, and how perfect for a first aid kit!
Quilting is in my Blood
Such a great pouch! Grey and red is one of my favorite color combinations.
