Around the Square Mini
I get to show you my Around the Square mini quilt today. I’m pretty excited to show this cute quilt to you, because it’s a new pattern released by Sherry of Powered by Quilting.
Around the Square is a fun pattern to make. It’s fat quarter friendly, and would also be easy to make by shopping your stash. Sherry does a great job of simplifying the pattern so it goes together easily and quickly. There are so many color ways that could be done with this pattern too. Two colors, like mine, or multi-colored like the quilt on Sherry’s blog. It would be a fun design to use with batiks, ombre fabric, or plaids.
Isn’t it cute nestled in my little yew?
I used red fabric from my stash and paired it with Natalie Barnes’ Makers Home Tatami Gray fabric. I love the graphic look it brings to the quilt. There was enough red fabric for the backing and binding too.
My little mini quilt measures 16 inches square. I quilted it with my usual wavy lines using Aurifil gray 50 wt thread.
With the little triangles left over, I made this little mug mat too.
This photo shows the actual colors in the quilt a bit better than the photos taken outdoors. You can also see my wavy quilting a little more in this photo.
Can you see the blue ox on the drinking glass? That’s a Minnesota joke between BigJ and me — he’s my Paul Bunyan, and I’m his Babe. Haha. (Actually it just helps us know whose glass is whose.)
I hope you hop over to Powered by Quilting and take a peek at the full size colorful Around the Square quilt. It’s so cheerful and fun. While you’re there, snag a pattern and make yourself a quilt!
Linking up today with Susan at Quilt Fabrication and Lorna at Sew Fresh Quilts.
Happy Stitching, friends!

Hi Wendy,
Oh, this is a cute little mini. I love the fabrics you chose, and the pattern really enhances them. Of course I also love the wavy quilting. That is always my favorite go-to, or the crosshatch. ~smile~ Roseanne

Thanks, Roseanne! I do like crosshatch too and will use that often if wavy doesn’t fit.

Hi Wendy, I love your mini with the two color option. I will definitely be making one for myself! Great job….

That is just stinkin’ cute! You both did good. I love that background fabric. Red is a hard fabric to get it to read right.
piecefulwendy
Thanks, Vicki! I agree that red is a difficult fabric to photograph. That background fabric is definitely a favorite of mine right now!

I love your version of Around the Square, Wendy! I checked out Sherry’s version yesterday, but I have to say your two color version is quite striking. There is just something about that fun gray print that gives this such a hip modern feel. Love it!
piecefulwendy
Thanks, Tish! That gray print is my current crush. I just ordered more of it.

I love it!! Both the background and the foreground fabrics are gorgeous and create such a graphic, bold look.

Well, that is just too cute. Mini quilts are so much fun to make. Might be time for me to make another one too.

Thanks, Barbara! You should make a mini! I love them.

Wendy, super cute mini!!! Love the tatami fabric. The quilting is perfect and adds a lot of interest! Great that you got a bonus mug rug out of it, too!

Thanks, Nancy!

When I first read your post, there were no comments yet and I took a brief moment to order the gray Tatani fabric. I think there’s going to be a rush for it now thanks to your wonderful quilt. Thanks for the inspiration, Babe!

Always happy to help! 😊

A great mini and mini mini! I love your versions of Sherry’s block. It was fun and easy. I did find a hint I wasn’t aware of for doing the 4-in-one flying geese, I am going to try it and see if it works. I always have one wonky one.
piecefulwendy
Thanks, Kathleen! Now i’m curious about the hint…
Sandra Healy
Great idea to do the mug rug to match the mini quilt!
piecefulwendy
Thanjs, Sandra!

Oh, you made a mini, and a mini mini from the mini scraps! They are both great! Love the Babe glass and the story behind it 🙂

Thanks, Louise! Glad you like them!
