August Color Challenge Blocks

As I started planning my August Color Challenge blocks, I was a bit disappointed that I had no flamingo objects – no fabric, no toy, no mug, nothing. But then – aha! Thanks to my sweet niece and her thank you note for her grad gift – I had a flamingo picture. Cute, huh?

I had to post that photo just for Patterns by Jen, the host of this 2020 Monthly Color Challenge. She likes flamingos, and chose the flamingo as inspiration for the August Monthly Color Challenge block. The color for August is hot pink.

I actually made two blocks this month. The first one gave me pause. It’s colorful, but I’m not sure it works. I call it my flamboyant flamingo, because well, it is!

Even the cat pincushion looks a bit stunned by all that’s going on in this block. I’m not sure what to think. I’ll keep it with the rest of the blocks for now. It will be a fun orphan block to play with if I decide not to use it.

I had to scrounge around for more pink (how can I not have hot pink)? I have a fun neon pink, but I didn’t want to use that for this block. That fabric is being used very sparingly because I don’t have much. Anyway, my scrounging paid off, and I found just enough hot pink in two shades to finish another block.

My second August Color Challenge Block, much better - piecefulthoughts.com

This hot pink fabric is a bit more sedate and flamingo-colored. I’m happy that I could use the Candy Pink sunflower fabric too (Karen Lewis for Robert Kaufman, Blueberry Park line).

One of my few encounters with flamingos is a memory from many years ago. I was at DisneyWorld, and back then the flamingos roamed freely on the grounds. I was amazed at how tall they were – taller than all 5’4″ of me. They paid very little attention to all the people milling around. They are a large, beautiful birds.

What about you? Do you have a flamingo collection, or a story of a flamingo encounter? Let me know!

Hi Wendy, I like both of your blocks! I think the first one would make a cute basket! I love the sunflower print from the Blueberry line, I have some in all of the colors offered — it’s one of those fabrics that I hoard. Son #1 was married in the Garden Chapel at the Flamingo Las Vegas Hotel — it was beautiful and the flamingos roamed the area freely!

“even the cat looks a bit stunned” made me laugh out loud…you are so funny Wendy! I didn’t realize flamingo’s were so tall, that would be a sight to see. I’ve never had a flamingo encounter but now I want one. LOL

Your blocks are great, but I have not a flamingo tale to tell. I have seen them, but never and up close and personal encounter. The pic is fabulous of the graduating flamingos. I think the first block works, but maybe it will stand out with the others….could go on the back or become another things. It has kind of a mexican feel to me…maybe a flamingo appliquéd onto it..

Yay for flamingos! I have always loved them. I especially love vintage flamingo vases … but really anything vintage flamingo. If I ever move to Florida, I will have a flamingo room. Of course chances of that happening with Brian are zero percent. So I’ll stick with my Scottie Dog collection, which he tolerates. 🙂 Both of the quilt blocks are flamingo fun!

girl I’ve been obsessed with flamingos for years…. made probably 25 flamingo quilts too. I have a whole drawer stuffed with flamingo prints. They run the gamut from white to salmon to fushia colors too. What a fun challenge. LeeAnna

I like that block design. I’m looking for a modern design for my teal mini swap. Haven’t been able to contact my partner after trying for almost two weeks, and so I’m not going to do anything very fancy. Your blocks look great. That top fabric with the little o’s was a teal mini fabric last year, if memory serves.

Cute kitty! I think she’s lovin’ the hot pink as much as we are! Flamingo story: for 2 1/2 years we lived in a small town in Japan that very near a zoo. The flamingo pool had a fence that was open to the street, so we could see the 50 or so flamingoes every time we drove by. They are fun birds to watch!

Two very different blocks! The first is a bit of a wild flamingo…maybe had a few margaritas?? The second is definitely more sedate. My GD likes flamingos so she got a flamingo pillowcase for Christmas. When we started making masks, I had just enough of that print (it was a Christmas flamingo) to make a mask that my sister got.

I’ve never seen a flamingo in person, except maybe at a zoo many years ago as a child. You’d think all that time in Florida would have yielded a sighting, but no! I have a very similar hot pink fabric that is sort of printed to look like burlap, and it is quite thick. Is yours a heavier weight, too?

Love the picture of the flamingos with graduation hats!!! Funny! My family has a membership to the Riverbanks Zoo in Columbia, SC. The flamingos are in a big outside area at the zoo outside (appropriately) the bird building/aviary. When one of the hurricanes was making it’s way in our general direction, I think it was Florence, they needed to move the flamingos to an indoor habitat. So they gave the flamingos rides on golf carts!!!! Each zookeeper held a flamingo and they took them to their temporary indoor home. I found this hilarious.

I think both your blocks are great. I do like the “stunned” kitty pin cushion! I like the flamingo exhibit at the Albuquerque zoo, but it’s probably been more than 10 years since I’ve been there. I really like that super hot pink fabric with the Karen Lewis candy pink sunflower fabric. Take care, Mary.

Hi Wendy! Love, love, LOVE that photos of the flamingos. How cute is that?!! I love both of your blocks. I do not have a flamingo encounter to share. Isn’t that a little sad?!! Hey, where’s the Wilbur picture? I thought every.single.post would feature one . . . ~smile~ Roseanne

Very bright and fun blocks! I’d have a hard time pulling pinks, I just don’t have much of that color in my stash. When we lived in Texas, we’d visit Moody Gardens, the little girl really liked to watch the flamingos. They are such pretty birds.
