Autumn Drive in the Wild
Autumn Drive spent some time in the wild this weekend, and I thought it would be fun to show you a few of the photos.
The trees were past peak colors, so it was a challenge to find what I was looking for — a backdrop of color. This was about as close as I came.
We took these photos at Hawk’s Ridge in Duluth, which overlooks Lake Superior. In this photo, you can just barely see the lake in the background. The clouds had gathered, and it’s difficult to see where they stop and the lake begins.
We drove down the ridge a bit, and I found this shot. This is my favorite.
Autumn Drive Stats
Quilt Size: 27″ square
Fabrics – Kona Solids: Lipstick, Cerise, Eggplant, School Bus, Caramel, Chartreuse and Carrot
Background Fabric – Moda Grunge Excaliber
Backing Fabric – Kona Coal
Threads – Aurifil: Grey Smoke (5004)- 40 wt.; Bright Orange (1133), Red (2250), Yellow Orange (2145), Cafe Au Lait (2340), Spring Green (1231), Magenta (2535) and Dark Violet (2582) – all 50 wt.
Batting – Quilter’s Dream Select (left over piece from my stash)
Quilt was faced using this method. I found this very easy to do and will be using it again. Here is a photo peek of the facing.
I had a few scraps left over, so I stitched them together. I’m not quite sure what this will become yet. Maybe a zippy pouch . . .
Have a great Monday, everyone! What are you working on this week?

Thanks. Karla! Hope you do try the facing 😊

I just love the modern vibe of this piece, Wendy. It’s not a typical autumn quilt, and so very sophisticated! Your photo shoot is fun. I just hear you crunching through the leaves to get the shots 🙂
piecefulwendy
Thanks, Louise! I love to walk through leaves!

You got some great shots, I love that first one with the gold trees. Hope your trip was great. How was Canal Park-I see you didn’t get any pic’s there.
piecefulwendy
Thanks! Canal Park wasn’t too photo worthy after the last storm!

Hi Wendy! Oh, those photos are gorgeous. I especially love the Lake Superior in the background one – it looks so chilly with the low clouds. It looks like snow might be in your near future. Boy it went very quickly to past peak colors for the trees, didn’t it? Down here in SE Wisconsin we are at peak but the winds for the last two days wiped most of the leaves off of the trees. Darn it. Happy Monday! ~smile~ Roseanne

Thanks! Yes, it’s been a quick fall here too!

Great photos. I think I have a picture of Lake Superior that looks a lot like that…taken in Thunder Bay. I like that you sewed up your scraps. I’m going to have a lot of HST’s left over when I finish the cardinal. It’s tempting to sew them into something. Maybe you’ve given me the motivation I need.
piecefulwendy
Thunder Bay has some good Superior views!

Ohhh, great photos, Wendy!!! Love that first one especially. Perfect backdrops for your latest finish. Looks like a fun weekend drive. I finished off some baby quilts for Jack’s Basket and am delivering them today.
piecefulwendy
Thanks, Nancy, we did enjoy the trip!

Such a pretty quilt and pictures too! I have used a facing on several quilts and love the clean look of it, especially when hanging a quilt on the wall. This week I hope to finish my FIreburst quilt. we’ll see!
piecefulwendy
Oh! Can’t wait to see your Fireburst!

Wendy these are beautiful pictures. This is one of my favorite quilts so far of yours. Simple, but stunning.

Thanks, Jan 😊

I love this quilt Wendy! having the quilt in the foreground in the top photo makes it look much bigger than 27″! I love the very modern masculine vibe.
piecefulwendy
Thank you!
Smiles from Kate
Oh pretty pretty, and perfect for the season with those lovely colours on the grey background. Top marks for your wonderful photos.
piecefulwendy
Thanks so much, Kate!

I love that quilt taking a ride with you! What a lovely idea. Fall went by too fast, but we are having some beautiful days here – clear and crisp. Your facing looks fab! Glad you enjoyed the technique; its a keeper!
piecefulwendy
Thanks, Kathleen! I do hope to try the triangle corner facing too. I can see using both methods, depending on how I will hang the quilt.

I like your first picture best. The fall colors in the quilt show up nicely against the yellow leaves. The quilt is great. Very modern.
piecefulwendy
Thank you, Cherie!

A small quilt with such an impact, this one! LOVE seeing another Great Lake (as you know) and thinking of some Florida (former) neighbours who live in Duluth! Totally get that lake blending into sky look on Lake Erie some days too. How close are you to Duluth? We go through when we drive out to Alberta (though it’s usually my husband now; I fly, MUCH faster ha!)
piecefulwendy
We are about 3 hours from Duluth, Sandra. There was quite a bit of damage from the last storm. Flying is definitely faster! 😊
Lisa
Your quilt looks awesome out in the wild. The wild is starting to look a bit grey and it’s the perfect backdrop for all that colour.
piecefulwendy
Thank you, Lisa! It definitely adds a pop of color!
