Autumn Flight
Autumn Flight is my version of Robin Pickens’ Wind Drifter pattern. I came across the pattern back in July when I stopped at a quilt shop. I brought it home, and it became a Drop Everything and Make It (DrEAMi) project that I’ve been eager to share on one of Sandra’s linky parties over at MMMQuilts. I’m so glad that day has finally come!
The quilt shop sample was done in blue and green batiks; it was so pretty I almost bought the kit. I opted to work from my stash and see what I could come up with. I had a fat-eighth bundle of Elizabeth Hartman’s Adventure line, just what I needed for this project. But what about the background? The only color I had enough of and that coordinated was chocolate brown. I wasn’t sure how it would turn out, not having ever used brown as a background, but I was pleasantly surprised!
I’m not sure I’ve ever seen a lemur in a fall quilt before, but I think it adds a fun little surprise, don’t you? Admittedly, until I looked at them closer, I thought they were raccoons! Nevertheless, the colors lent themselves well to a fall quilt, and they pop against the dark brown.
I handed this off to Connie to quilt and she did her usual amazing work.
I like the leaf design in the larger arrows, along with the swirls in the background. Here’s another view:
My finished size of this wall quilt is 33″ square. The pattern also offers a 65″ square version.
My last DrEAMi project was all about cats, and you can see that one here. Autumn Flight will be remembered as one of my favorite DrEAMi projects of 2022.

You were brave to use the brown for the background–I’m not sure I’ve ever seen a brown background–but this is perfect! Such a beautiful combination of colors and pattern!

The chocolate brown as a background is stunning! I don’t think you could have chosen a better colour.

Started reading about your using brown and almost gasped when I scrolled down to see your quilt – it’s gorgeous! The chocolate brown is perfect, and the colors just pop against it. I immediately clicked on the pattern and am considering it. The quilting – wow – she does do a nice job. The pattern has a few mixed reviews, a couple with the smaller size. Did you have any issues?

Wendy this turned out beautifully in your scrap colors! Great choice in picking the brown, I would not have been that brave. But it is a perfect choice.

Love this one! The brown makes everything else in it pop, and it certainly has lots of movement. A great fall quilt! Connie did a great job on the quilting–all FMQ? If so, wow!

Not sure that I have ever used a solid brown as a background either. This quilt is just perfect with the brown! You were lucky to have all the right fabrics in your stash, YAY!!

I love your wall hanging! The chocolate background looks so cozy with those prints. This quilt really says “made by Wendy” because of the cozy modern look. I’m glad you were able to stitch it up so quickly!

You get amazing things out of your fabric stash, Wendy – Autumn Flight is beautiful! It really does make think of the geese that are flying every which way across our skies right now. Congratulations on your finish!

Hi Wendy! This is just stunning. That chocolate brown background is just perfect to let those fabrics shine. WOWEE. And it is so seasonal – Halloween through Thanksgiving, you might as well enjoy the heck out of your efforts. Nice job, my friend. {{Hugs}} a bunch. ~smile~ Roseanne

Brown is often an overlooked color with quilters. I love this as the background for Autumn Flight – it is perfect. Love that you got this one done promptly as a DrEAMi project. I can see why it would be one of your favorites.

Well, I just love looking at this one. There’s something about it that make my eyes jump around deciding where to look and which direction to go. Very pleasant to look at again then again then one more time.

That Lemur peaking out is adorable, and all the colors work together wonderfully for your fantastic fall quilt.

I like this quilt very much indeed. Beautiful design, which is beautifully stitched. The fabrics against the dark brown background are magical. And of course the lemur adds the final magical touch. Connie’s quilting is indeed spectacular.

I’ve recently come to realize how powerful the color brown can be. Your quilt is beautiful!

What a wonderful brilliant work. Yes this brown this is the perfect support for the fall colours. We often forget dark olive… as well a colour that bring other colours to shine. Or a aubergine-redbrown… do not know how to describe better. Out of the box thinking makes always so much fun.
Jocelyn Thurston
Yes I thought they were raccoons too! But instead, autumn lemurs! This is just stunning, Wendy. I wish I could put fabrics/colours together like you can. And the quilting lines so beautiful too.
Danice G
Absolutely love your quilt, and that pattern is definitely on my wish list.

You made the right decision not buying the kit. Yours is gorgeous, especially the way you used the prints with the chocolate background. And who doesn’t love a cute lemur?
