Awesome Ocean of Quilty Fun
I truly am having oceans of quilty fun here at Pieceful Thoughts. I’m sewing along with Kathleen McMusing and her Awesome Ocean Quiltalong. Are you? If not, I hope this post will convince you to join us.
Kathleen began this quilt along in November. I was playing around in my quilt room, paying no attention to my schedule, and fell behind. In the last few days, I’ve almost caught up. The blocks are fun, and so darn cute!
The pattern is Awesome Ocean by Elizabeth Hartman. If you’d like to get a copy of the pattern, you can find a link to order it on Kathleen’s blog right here. (Scroll down her page and you’ll find the link.)
Block 1 – Kelp
The pattern begins with an easy block – kelp. Here’s a peek at mine.
Pretty basic, right? My biologist daughter helped me choose the fabrics for my blocks, so I have colorful kelp 🙂
Block 2 – Octopus
These two kept me octopied (haha) for a couple of days. The block is not difficult as long as you pay close attention to the layout. Kathleen gives some handy tips in her post.
This block was so much fun to make, I could have stopped here and just made a whole quilt of just this block; but then I’d miss out on the next one.
Block 3 – Blowfish
I’m half done with my two Blowfish blocks. I should have the second one done this week.
I think I’ll have to call him Hootie, right? Not sure what I should call the second. Guess I’ll have to wait and see.
So far all of the fabrics I’ve used are from my batiks stash. I’m hoping I can make the entire baby quilt without having to purchase more fabric. We’ll see.
I hope you’ll join us. Visit Kathleen McMusing for more information and some tips on sewing the blocks. I’ll keep you posted on my progress as I go along, and I’ll also be a guest host with my tips for creating Mr. Manatee when we get to that block around the end of February.
Happy Monday, everyone!

Oh, another cute quilt! It’s fun to hear M had some input — sounds like you’re having fun. Batiks are perfect for an ocean quilt.

These look great! I’m also behind. I skipped the kelp because I don’t like it; I can always go back and make it later. I’m hoping to finish Octavian today–I have the bodies done but not the tentacles. My goal is to be caught up before Kathleen posts the next block. I look forward to sewing along!

Aha that is what you have been sewing lately! Sew cute;) That would be great if you could make the whole thing with only stash.

I just picked my fabrics and joining in starting in January; I have a lot of catching up to sew; I’m down for Preppie the Whale who will be purple. I haven’t decided if I’m making one or two blocks of each but if they’re as fun as you say they are……..you’re ’always getting me in trouble. I love your ocean-it is awesome!

Hi Wendy! Wow, you did a great job catching up. I love Hootie! And the kelp looks perfect as do your octopuses (not octopi – I had to look it up!). I’m heading in the sewing room to do something . . . anything . . . just don’t have a plan. ~smile~ Roseanne

Hootie indeed! I so love what you did and they are looking fab! I’m so excited to see your progress. Remember to link them up on each block page, if you can. This makes my heart so happy today!

You could call the second one Andthe. I love to look of Elizabeth Hartman quilts.

That looks like so much fun! Love the octopus block especially. Isn’t it great when you have the perfect fabric in your stash for a whole new project?!

If the first blowfish is Hootie, the second one must be Tootie (Two-tee?) I guess! Super cute blocks! A gal in my online guild is sewing these up and sharing the photos. I didn’t realize it was a quilt along 🙂

So you were octopied!!! I am sure this kelp storm will soon blow (fish) over and when the next block comes along you will be completely immersed in it :-p Wishing you a healthy, happy, and joyful year full of creativity.

Cute blocks. I started one a year or so ago and stalled out. Maybe I will pick it up again after I finish a couple of quilts.
