Baggie Quilt
What is a baggie quilt, you ask? Well, just a silly name I made up, to be honest. It doesn’t involve sewing with baggies, in case you’re wondering.
See that little baggie on the left? It was full of little 1-1/2″ squares. I received it, along with the other baggie, tucked in to a box with a bunch of red scraps that I won from Mari over at The Academic Quilter. I was delighted to receive the red scraps (she was very generous), and I have plans to make a red and white quilt with them once I decide on a pattern.
Anyway, back to the baggie quilt. I took the little 1-1/2″ squares from the baggie and began to sew them together in pairs, then the pairs into pairs. I didn’t bother to check if they were exactly 1-1/2″ square, and I didn’t allow myself to try to match which squares should go together. When all was said and done, I had enough strips to make six little 16-patch blocks that were 4-1/2″ square. (I did pull out a bunch of little yellow squares and set them aside, but more about that in a minute.)
I planned to border the six quilt squares with a low volume white or gray, then play with some slow stitching. The light colored background just didn’t work for me, though, so I auditioned some other solid colors and ended up with my favorite, orange.
This little baggie quilt measures 13 inches by 18 inches. The border fabric and binding is Kona Orange. All the little scraps were so fun to see, like this light pink/purple that has a bit of glimmer to it.
This little leopard print pink square against the orange has me just a bit dazzled.
The backing is this fun black and white print that was in my stash. It looks a bit chaotic with all the stitching, but it’s kind of fun, don’t you think?
You’ve seen by now that I played around a bit with the quilting. I started out using Aurifil Bright Orange (#1133) thread to stitch in the ditch around the blocks, then I framed them by quilting around each square inside the orange border. Finally, I added some additional machine quilting using Aurifil Spring Green (#1231) and Aurifil Dark Violet (#2582).
I wanted to add some texture for fun, so I did some big stitching using Wonderfil Perle Cotton Eleganza #8 in yellow, pink and blue variegated threads. There is no quilting in the 16-patch blocks.
I like the look of the mixture of threads as well as machine and hand sewing.
One more photo.this time by the flowers and falling leaves on my deck. I looking forward to using this mini in my fall decorations!
The baggie quilt was a little challenge that I made to myself, and it was a fun way to play with fabric scraps. I just may do the same with the other baggie.
Oh — remember that little pile of yellow squares I set aside? And remember those little pineapples in my last post? Well, I had to make a couple more pineapples, so I used the little yellow squares to make two more. I call these the party pineapples, because they are much less conservative than the two hanging over my kitchen sink.
Fun, huh? They aren’t done yet, because I haven’t decided what to do with them. What do you think? Should I make a little mini with the two blocks? Should I make two separate blocks? A pillow? Give me some suggestions; I’d love to find something fun to make with them.

I love how creative we get using scraps, just think someone might have just thrown those squares into the landfill. But now you have a useful project! I think you should make a few more pineapples and make a table runner to go with your pineapples in the kitchen.

Thank you, Vicki!

Wendy, I love your little “orange” quilt. What a fun way to use the scraps and do some slow stitching. As for the pineapple blocks, I’m a pillow fan, especially the feather pillows from Ikea.
piecefulwendy
Thank you, Tracie! A pillow might be fun!

Such tiny 16 patch blocks! I love what you did with them and especially love hand stitching mixed with machine stitching. The pineapple blocks are just too cute!

Thanks, Jayne!

Love the little sixteen patches. It is fun to see the colour play with the orange and the various patches. Did you have trouble pulling the eleganza 8 through the 3 layers? I’ve tried the 12 weight but have not ventured further.

are the pineapple blocks the right size for mug rugs? the little four patch quilt is a nice decoration for sure
piecefulwendy
Yes, they are! Thank you, Karen!

I love the name – baggie quilt! You are too funny. The orange border was a perfect choice and I love the big stitch quilting you added. Hmmm I think on the pinapple blocks I might make them a hostess gift – as they are a sign of welcome – lets call it a Vase rug!
piecefulwendy
Vase rug — haha! Brilliant! Thanks, Kathleen!

Ha ha! Baggie quilt is a great name for this idea! Makes me want to go dig out a couple of baggies that I know have tiny HSTs in them 🙂
Party Pineapples are so fun and fruity! I would make a vertical wall hanging out of the two of them because all my wall spaces are tall and skinny. It would be great as a kitchen wall quilt, or even in a small guest bathroom to add a spark of sunshine!

Thanks, Louise! Great ideas!

Looks like your Solar Flare quilt set the window frame on fire 🙂 Seriously, you can do better than baggie quilt – as far as the name goes. As a finished product, I kinda like it ;-p I suggest you grill those pineapples on that open flame and then they will be smoky and yummy.
piecefulwendy
Hahaha! Thank you, Preeti!

Well that turned out so cute. I like doing those little minis, and I’d like to do more of them. I’m involved in a swap currently and I’ll be making a mug rug. That’ll give me a chance to do something small.

Thanks, Barbara!

The orange works so well with your scraps for a cheery little piece! And sorry, no ideas for the pineapples. I’d probably make more for a bigger quilt.

Thanks, Susan!

Wendy, I love your mini quilt — the orange fabric really makes it pop! I plan to use my pineapple blocks as potholders — can’t have too many of those 🙂

Thanks, Karla!

Hi Wendy! I love your little baggie quilt! The quilting is fab, especially that hand stitching with the Perle cotton. That texture just makes it all the better! And orange is your favorite color? That is one color I rarely use although I do like it! Hmm, those pineapples are so darn cute. I love, love, LOVE the gray polka dots with them. I like Louise’s idea of the vertical wall hanging – that appeals to me as well. Happy Wednesday to you! ~smile~ Roseanne

I wasn’t aware of this post until I saw the baggy quilt on my Pinterest feed and realized it was yours. I love it, full of inspiration and I love the hand quilting. It is so rewarding to finish a small project like this. As for the Pineapple blocks, I like everyones suggestions. They really are cute.

Thanks, Norma! I’ll
Look forward to seeing your scrappy creations!

Adorable little runner – isn’t it amazing what we can do with ‘found’ fabrics?! Love the big stitch addition too. How about potholders? I’ve made a few, and use them all the time. Or hot pads? One of which, LOL i use under my Brita water jug, and the other under my electric kettle, side by side in the cupboard!

How cute! And I love the way you mounted the pineapples in your kitchen. Genius!

The baggie quilt? What a great name. The orange makes a wonderful frame, I’ve taken note that sometimes neutral isn’t the best option there. Congrats on a fun and bright little mini!
piecefulwendy
Thank you, Kate!

Those tiny pineapples are adorable! I love the idea of two tiny mini quilts hanging together 🙂 The orange border fabric absolutely makes the baggie quilt sing. It was a perfect choice. And I love the addition of the hand stitching in the quilting.

Oh how I love the way that orange fabric sets off the little squares….and I also love that big stitch quilting. You have been having fun! Very nice pineapples as well. I’m thinking I will have to make a pineapple quilt one day as well. I was thinking of making one with one giant pineapple. What do you think.
piecefulwendy
Oh, a giant pineapple would be fun! Thanks, Lisa!
