Challenge Quilt
The third theme for our group, The Endeavorers, was “a walk in the park”. Here’s my challenge quilt interpretation of that theme.
I started with a quilted piece that I had planned to use for the last theme, but didn’t when I went a different direction. It was a quilted sandwich of Grunge fabric, quilted with wavy lines. I thought it would be appropriate, given how much rain we’ve had this summer.
I also fussy cut some large flowers from a piece of Kaffe Fassett fabric in my stash.
Once I had settled on a layout, I stitched each flower to the quilt with embroidery thread. It was very fun to realize I had all the right color of thread for this project.
The flowers were fused, but just raw edge applique. To stitch, I just made long and short stitches, following the lines on the flowers. It was simple, relaxing work; however, stitching through the already quilted sandwich made it a little more difficult.
As you can see in the first photo, I haven’t completed this challenge quilt quite yet. I’m still debating whether to bind or face it, and I’d like to add a few more embellishments, like a dragonfly. We’ll see.
What about you? How would you interpret “a walk in the park”?

That’s a pretty way to highlight the flowers, Wendy! Great you could use what you had previously made!

Yes you need to face it!! It is a very good interpretation of a walk in the park:)

I always look forward to your posts. I think a really narrow binding would work nicely. You are very inspiring when you relate using existing pieces to complete a new project. Send a picture of your final to us.

I think facing is right and a little bug would be nice. I love what you did – walk in the park it sure is! The long/short stitches are just perfect.

I see that my first comment didn’t show up here either so I checked an fixed my badger setting for your blog. When I first commented, I know that I thought your stitching on the flowers really brought out their color. I did a little of that on my piece too. I like how you chose to depict the rain as well. I love this colorful piece.

Wendy this is a great interpretation. Yeah you had the right colors of thread for sure, they are perfect. I agree with Nancy, a little bug would be cute.

Wendy, this is a beautiful interpretation — I agree with the other comments that facing would be perfect! Your stitching is awesome!

The flowers are beautiful. That’s a good way to do it. I always machine stitch, but I like this idea.

This is very striking. I love the way you stitched the background. It’s a wonderful use of those large Kaffee prints (which I love but am sometimes at a loss with how to use). I’m wondering if you add “something” to the top left corner, that the eye would move around the piece a bit more. You did say you were wondering about more embellishments.

I love the background piece – it really does make you think of rain! The large, bright flowers really give this piece a Wow! effect, too. I’ll enjoy seeing how you finish it off, Wendy!

How would I interpret “a walk in the park”? Well Wendy, in one of the episodes of That 70s Show, “a walk in the park” was code for being intimate 😀 Ever since I watched that episode, I have been forever ruined.
On the other hand your lovely flowers are beautifully made and evoke feelings of joy and beauty. Since the process was relaxing,we are both on the same page. I hope you will enjoy this walk in the park for many many years!!!
