Christmas Week!

It’s Christmas week – how can that be! Everyone I talk with is busy getting last minute preparations done for their family gatherings. I am pretty caught up, although my gifts aren’t wrapped and no cookies have been baked – yet. I do have some progress to show you from my quilt room, and I’ll be linking up with Carol, Melva and Brenda once again (links at end of post). Let’s take a look at my one project I completed this week.

Last week, I showed you the three blocks I recently tested for Sandra Healy Designs. I first started stitching up these test blocks for Sandra back in 2021, beginning with the stars and the angel. This weekend, I made one more angel block and one more camel block. Then I was ready to put the top together.

Inage shows a quilt of Nativity blocks - the manger scene, angels, camels, stars, shepherds, maji, donkey and cow on a teal background - piecefulthoughts.com

The background fabric is mostly Grunge fabric in Dynasty. I think I chose that background because I happened to have a lot of it on hand, it’s one of my favorites. I enjoyed choosing the fabrics for each block, especially the camel blankets. I have to chuckle at the camel’s ear on the right – It is just a tad too dark. He’s just a unique camel! The current size is roughly 36″ x 48″. I think I will add a small border to add a finishing touch. As much as I would enjoy having this quilt finished by Christmas, I will just enjoy it on my design wall for now.

Last week, I had my challenge quilt and SAHRR quilt on my to do list. I have no progress to report to you on either of those quilts, but I have several ideas brewing. I will work on them when I have time between holiday festivities. I did finish the little Christmas project, which you can see here.

This week, I have one little long overdue UFO up on my design wall. I’m pondering if it’s ready to be quilted or if something more needs to be added. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve pulled this UFO out, looked at it, thought about tossing it (seriously), and then sticking it back in the drawer. Now would be a good time to finish it up – maybe it would bring a little snow our way if I do. Along with the challenge quilt and the SAHRR project, that is my main to-do for the week. I don’t even have a sneak peek photo to show you. Are you curious yet?

As for Wilbs, he’s bored silly by all this holiday business. It stresses him quite a bit, as you can see.

I honestly don’t know how this can possibly be a comfortable position, but he seems to like it. Yes, he sleeps with his eyes open just a bit sometimes. He was also noticing me leaning down to take the photo, but not wanting to move out of that comfy position!

Happy Christmas week to you! Thank you for stopping in to read my post. I hope you all enjoy your holiday preparations and sewing! Enjoy celebrating with your family and friends!

Your quilt top turned out so nice. It will bring you much happiness over the years and keeping it on a design wall for the holidays brings the holidays into your sewing room. Merry Christmas to you, Wilbs (my neck really hurts looking at him) and the rest of your family.

  • The Morning Latte

Oh they all came together so beautifully and have made up the best Christmas quilt! But Wilbs! My neck hurts just lookin’ at ya! (He looks like he’s giving you the side-eye, like he’s thinking “don’t you dare post that pic, hooman!”)

The Nativity quilt top is all the preparation you need for a blessed Christmas, IMHO. Never mind the baking of cookies or the finishing of the quilt! It is beautiful and will bring Christmas into your studio.

Thank you for finding the time to post!! W
The one who has nothing on the to do list gets the price of the lotterie.. lol
This is so lovely!! You know there is a grunge fan at the other side of the ocean.
The ear is ok, there are sheeps in black and white in nature, there is much more hard contrast. This makes it double lovely and unique.
Wilbs: oh yes.. he is telling you… dont post this picture of me, there will be better!
This looks really horrible for our necks… but well, he is a special cat!

Have a great count down week ladies, take a good coffee or drink in the evening and let us be proud to master this special time for our friends and families!

It’s lovely to see all your blocks together in the finished quilt top. I love the Dynasty background. Thanks once again for all your help testing. Have a wonderful Christmas!

What a lovely nativity quilt top, I like the grunge background. How in the world can Wilbs even be a little bit comfy? Merry Christmas Wendy to you and your family.

  • Helen

Kudos to Sandra Healy Designs. This is a precious design. And, your right camel is perfect… maybe there’s a little unicorn blood in his family line… ha ha!

  • Tracie

I hope you have a happy Christmas, Wendy! Your nativity quilt is a pretty addition to your design wall and will be fun to enjoy every year. Wilbs and Wally are quite a pair of nappers who seem to enjoy being squished into a soft spot. Wilbs looks like he’s dreaming of sugar plums and other Christmas treats.

I wish I could contort myself like our kitties do
I love the nativity quilt. You sent me down her rabbit hole when you first
    posted about this quilt

You really pulled the nativity quilt together in spectacular form, so special. You will finish it in the new year and next year when you open your Christmas decorations box you will have a wonderful surprise to decorate with! I want to be like Wilbur and curl up in a ball and forget everything else, so much going on here to get ready for next week, haha. Happy Holidays to you and your family.

This nativity quilt top is just the thing for Christmas! I think camels fur has different shadings so his ear is just shaded darker, sometimes like cats. That cat position of Wilbs looks crazy!

That Christmas quilt is really fun. I like the teal background, it’s different, but lets the blocks shine. Looking forward to next year’s SAHRR. I’m excited to see what the prompts are. I have a theme for my 2024 version, so I’m really looking forward to that kick off.

I like the nativity quilt — when it is out, it is larger and easier to see than an actual nativity set, and when it is time to put it away, it is much easier to store — it takes up less room and it is not breakable! It is a nice design and you did a lovely job with it. (I would want those camels to have some nice straw to lay in like the other animals have though. 🙂 )

  • Brenda @ Songbird Designs

Wendy, I absolutely LOVE your Nativity quilt! That background is perfect IMO!! I love grunge too! I love each and every block and think the camels are great, dark ear and all! LOL With much trimming and adding and lobbing off corners, I finally finished my SAHRR center block yesterday! I think the rest will be easy until I get to the last round! Sweet Wilbs does look comfy in his bed there! Thanks for sharing with us on Monday Musings. Have a great week getting ready for Christmas! It seems there is such a flurry of activity for it to be gone in an instant.

Merry Christmas Wendy! The Nativity scene is so pretty. I am also a fan of the grunge fabrics (though I always thought the name to be a little strange). Anyway, I hope you have a great week – today I am planning to stay in sweats all day and sew… bake…. wrap – all the fun things!

  • Yvonne @Quilting Jetgirl

Congratulations on getting the quilt top pieced. It looks wonderful and like the perfect project to hang out on your design wall this week. I hope you can find a solution to help you finish up the long term UFO, but most of all, I hope you have an enjoyable Christmas week. Merry Christmas!

Your Christmas quilt is just gorgeous. I love Wilbur’s pose – it always amazes me what shapes animals can get into. I haven’t done any baking – I will just do the eating – since we go to family. I will bring a couple of bottles of something, that always works.

  • LA Paylor

OMG Wilbur is so cute!!! squee!
on my email notice the picture frame had “an orange cat ” and I laughed, thinking I better come over here and admire him…

  • Nancy @ Grace and Peace Quilting

I love your Nativity quilt, Wendy!!! A great way to decorate for Christmas, whether it’s on the design wall or otherwise!!!

  • Sally Johnson

It turned out just beautiful, and perfect! What a special quilt to treasure. Connie will definitely work her magic on it! Have a wonderful Christmas. Here’s to lots of sewing in 2024!

  • Quilting is in my Blood

Your Nativity quilt is awesome! I think I’ve purchased six of the blocks from Sandra and will definitely buy the other three blocks. I’m leaning toward making a Nativity quilt for a dear friend next year.

  • Carol Andrews

Wendy your little quilt with Sandra’s blocks is beautiful! I’m looking forward to seeing your UFo and hurray for it being time for the SAHRR! Thank you for linking with To Do Tuesday. Hope your holiday season is filled with joy, family and fun times in your sewing WIP studio. 🤗
