Color Pop Mini

My Color Pop Mini Quilt is my final project for September. It came about when I was cleaning my quilt space and came across the leftover scraps from my Lichen quilt and my Improv Triangles quilt. Thankfully, I was almost done with my cleaning, because I stopped everything I was doing and started playing with more pieced curves. So, this little quilt also qualifies as a DrEAMi Project (Drop Everything and Make It) – also known as a “Squirrel” and I’ll be linking up with Sandra at MMM!Quilts for her linky party. If you’re not familiar with Sandra’s linky party, you can find out more about it in Sandra’s introductory post right here

Admittedly, most of the month of September has been DrEAMi projects. I’ve played with batik scraps, made a pincushion from a pattern I just had to try, made a tool kit tote, and I’m currently having fun making wonky maverick stars.

While all that’s been going on, I’ve been playing with curves. This mini quilt today is the second mini quilt I’ve made using the templates from Jen Carlton Bailly. Both of the minis I’ve made have used the 3.5″ templates, but I have some little curvelets in the works too that I’ve been hand piecing now and then.

Kona Pickle came out to play once again. The circles are made with scraps from my improv trees quilt. I tossed in the blue strips from my Lichen quilt, then added the stripe just for fun and a little pizzaz. The block design is Turbine by Jen Carlton Bailly.

I’m still getting the hang of squaring the curve blocks, so some of my circle blocks are a bit wonky.

To quilt Color Pop, I stitched diagonal lines – a bit wonky diagonal lines, mind you. Might as well keep the wonky theme going. I had thought about doing a grid, but stopped with the diagonal and let it be. Since it’s a practice quilt and a learning curve (see what I did there?), I’m okay with it not being exactly as I’d hoped.

Then what to use for the backing. Hmm. Initially I planned to use Kona Pickle, but changed my mind. I’d rather save that for another project. I had just enough of this vibrant Kaffe Fassett print, so why not?

I added a binding in Kona Pickle, and my Color Pop mini is done. This one will join the others on my mini quilt wall.

Now that my Color Pop Mini is done and posted, I’ll be taking a short blogging break. I’ll be back with you all in a couple of weeks.

Enjoy your weekend, my friends!

I really like those circles with the strips – did you applique the strips or cut things apart sew on the strips and sew it all back together

Oh, that squirrel prop! Haha!!! He’s having a heyday in your studio! I love the diagonal quilting on your color pop! Lots of fun color going on. Where did you find the Kona Pickle?

  • Quilting is in my Blood

I also love your squirrel prop. How fun. All these squirrels and minis are so much fun, especially your color pop mini. I do much better with squaring up curved units if I oversize the units and them trim them down to size, but then there is a lot more fabric waste. Have a great day, Mary.

I love little projects that happen when you’re cleaning up from something else and realize you could use those leftover bits for a new idea! The colors in this one are really wonderful – they DO pop! I think I need some Kona Pickle to play with, too. 🙂

That Kona pickle! Love seeing it come out to play again. I also love that you decided to put the Kaffe on the back – perfect! I am jealous of all the squirrels you got to play with this month; however, I hereby do bestow upon you the DrEAMi crown of squirreldom! I am loving seeing all the curve play around the quilty internet! Thank you for linking up and enjoy your well-deserved break.

Hi Wendy! I love your little mini Color Pop, and it is very aptly named. That Kona Pickle is just the bomb – I’m so glad you didn’t use it as the backing and are saving it for another project appearance. That little pincushion is so darn cute, too. {{Hugs}} Nice job all the way around. ~smile~ Roseanne

Kona Pickle is getting to be your signature color! And you know I love the bright boldness of this one. As zesty as a big pickle! I’m amazed at how well the Kaffe print coordinates with it. You’ve had quite the burst of artistic creativity this month 🙂

What a neat mini, and the colors are just perfect together, especially the Pickle and the backing. What a great eye for color you have. I am LOL at Sandra’s “DrEAMi crown of squirreldom”! That’s a thing, right? 😀

Such a bright and super fun quilt. I love the combinations of colors and that stripy piece of fabric just makes this a delightful quilt. You are so full of creativity with the projects you’ve been showing. Hope your trip is fun!

This one may have just swooped in and become my favorite of all your quilts. There are a half dozen reasons that it draws me in… the bright colors, the contrast from background to circles, the combination of circles and squares, the random but not really random lines, the subtle differences in the pie shaped pieces, the quirkiness inside the geometric sameness… it calls me back for another look.

When did you make this? OMG, I live under a rock. Well, kinda. Now Wendy, you may call it a mini but the Pp factor of this quilt is MAXI 🙂 And the wonkiness makes it so adorable!!!
