Comfort of Home Block

The Comfort of Home block is the next block in the Pieces of the Santa Fe Trail BOM hosted by Melva Loves Scraps. You can read Melva’s post about this block, and read the excerpt from the book here.

The excerpt made me think back to our last drive to Santa Fe, and the beauty of the drive over the Raton Pass. I cannot imagine making that journey by horse and wagon back in those days. Even with the ease of paved highways, that land is rugged, and beautiful.

I chose to use red for my block, because the reference in the excerpt to chokecherries brought back memories of my mother. We would often take Sunday afternoon drives, and I recall her spying wild chokecherries, asking Dad to stop, so she could hop out and pick them. I actually looked through her recipe box to see if I could find her recipe for chokecherry jam, but there was none. I assume she just knew the jam making process and went from there. I also thought I should nestle the block amongst my ferns, also a favorite of my mother.

It’s been awhile since I’ve gathered the blocks together, so here’s a peek:

We’re getting closer to the end of the year, so just a few blocks more. This time of year, the Comfort of Home block makes me think of how nice it is to have a comfy chair, a warm quilt, and friends and family around. I hope you feel the same!

The whole quilt itself (at least the blocks created so far) evokes The Comfort of Home to me!
I’m loving this and can’t wait to see how you end up piecing the blocks etc together – but then that’s a bit down the ‘Santa Fe’ road yet!

I really like how this BOM is causing you to research and reflect. I agree that I start to think about the comfort of quilts, a warm home, and friends and family a lot more this time of year. Your blocks look great together!

Pretty block, Wendy! It makes me think of windows – being home and looking out, or driving in after a long work day and seeing the lights on welcoming everyone home. We’ve driven Raton Pass many times. It is definitely hard to imagine how people in wagons got through there!

Love the name of the block and your reflections on home and memories of your mother. I’ve also driven the Raton Pass many times, and I agree with Diann that it’s hard to imagine how people in wagons go through there. I met a woman once who was trapped in a car on that pass with her family for three days!

Hi again! Oh, what a nice post and an equally nice block. What wonderful memories you have of your parents. I’ve never heard of a chokecherry. I’ll have to look that up and see if there are any in Wisconsin. It won’t be long and we’ll be snuggling underneath a quilt or even two! ~smile~ Roseanne

I like the red you used! What nice memories of your mother. 🙂
I remember the Raton Pass and loved being there but I wouldn’t want to be in anything but a car. 😀
Your blocks all look great together!
