Droplets
Droplets of water condensating on a window was the starting point of this little quilt design.
It Started With This Photo
This is a photo taken at 7:15 am in Florida during the month of August. See those water droplets on the window? This photo still amuses me, because I wonder how that little frog got all the way up to our second floor window. But I digress.
Then Came the Colors
This quilt block from The Quilter’s Planner Sampler Quilt Along is the inspiration for the colors I used in my mini quilt.
The combination of those colors together is so refreshing in the midst of our cold, dreary winter here in Minnesota. The colors remind me of sunshine and ocean views. This could be influenced by an upcoming trip to Florida too.
Then The Design
Out of all that pondering came this design, a little modern take on water droplets on a window. I colored it close to the colors so I could see if I liked it.
I had plenty of Kona Snow for the background, and thanks to some quilty friends, some nice pieces of Kona Lagoon and Kona Jamaica to use for the teal/turquoise 4-patch blocks. They are about 2-1/2″ square.
Once the blocks were done, I began piecing the quilt together. I completely forgot to take pictures of the process. It came together fairly well, with a few tweaks along the way.
Introducing – Droplets!
This little quilt measures 16″ x 21″. I chose to machine quilt it with organic wavy lines using my walking foot. The wavy lines remind me of the way droplets run down a window during the rain (or the humidity). I quilted it using Aurifil 4663, a pretty little varigated thread called Baby Blue Eyes.
The backing is a low volume piece from my stash. The binding is Kona Peacock, another piece from my stash.
This little mini will be added to the quilts that will go on my mini quilt wall when we get that project done. It was very satisfying to make a quilt from design to finish.
Have a good weekend, friends! My weekend will be spent as roadie to my husband as he skis the American Birkebeiner. Likely not much sewing happening, but I will be drafting more designs and doing some much needed thinking and planning.

Girl you have designer genes in you!! I love it:) And your wavy quilting is perfect. I need to take wavy lessons from you, that is how I want mine to look and they never do:(
piecefulwendy
Thanks, Vicki! I can show you wavy, next time we’re quilting together!

Hi Wendy,
What a lovely finish from concept to conclusion. I do wonder how that frog got on a second floor window?!! Good grief, that would be a scary first hop off the window. The quilting is just perfect for this piece – that is exactly the path those droplets would follow. And the variegated thread is another perfect touch. You will smile upon this one for years just remembering Florida and that cute little frog. ~smile~ Roseanne

Thank you!

love the frog on the window – we get them on our windows here in Arkansas frequently and they just crawl up the outside walls to the windows – I have some that are quite high up off the ground level

I wish we had cute little frogs like that around here. I love how this design blossomed into the mini quilt. You are taking the 30 day challenge to the next level and I love it!

Thanks, Tish!

Sew cute! Very creative. I’m looking forward to seeing your mini quilt gallery when it comes together. Have a great trip! Are you able to go? The driving is a little dicey here.

This mini is awesome and would be delightful large, too! It is rather fun creating and executing your own designs, isn’t it?
piecefulwendy
Yes, it is! Thanks, Kathleen!

Wendy, I am so happy that you made this mini quilt. I loved your design as I saw it drawn on instagram and I wish I designed it my self. It’s really lovely and the wavy lines like falling water drops are just the ticket.

Thank you so much, Lisa!

I enjoyed reading through your process Wendy. I am not a design person and it intrigues me to hear how someone goes from concept to finished project. This is really pretty – and the little frog is so cute. We have lots of tiny ones but out in the yard – not climbing up a window. 🙂
Enjoy the weekend!

How did I miss reading this post? I’m pretty sure it had something to do seeing the frog which made me cruise by your post. I love everything about your mini quilt–especially the quilting. It is a great feeling to finish a mini quilt and I keep saying I should take a break and make one. Love your Droplets quilt, please don’t appliqué a frog on it.
piecefulwendy
No frogs going on it! Just the droplets! Thanks!

It’s wonderful. Thanks for the peek at your process.

I love the droplets and I am a big fan of the wavy line quilting. But, honestly, what did you do to the frog???
piecefulwendy
Thanks, Preeti! I left the little froggy alone, and left him off the quilt. The Droplets got the main stage!

I was expecting a frog! This is so much better. Really does evoke raindrops running down a window. Beautiful design!
