Early Spring Quilt
Early spring can’t come soon enough here in Minnesota, but if we can’t have the actual spring season come soon, at least I can make a quilt in colors that make me think of it. Can’t you see the spring colors popping through the snow?
This little quilt measures 24-1/2 inches square. (The photo above makes it look a bit more rectangular, but it is square.)
I bought the fabric on one of our trips when we stopped at Missouri Star Quilt Company. It is called The Wordsmith by Janet Claire for Moda. The colors are muted blues, grays and creams with mixtures of text and blooms throughout the fabric. I didn’t really have a plan for the charm pack, so I just sewed them into HSTs and created this little quilt.
It took me awhile to figure out how to quilt it. My initial plan was to just use my walking foot and make diagonal lines, but I really wasn’t too excited about that. Then I came up with this idea.
I decided to quilt straight lines in the blocks around the center square of the quilt . Hopefully you’ll see what I mean in this picture. I used an Aurifil gray thread, and it blends so well it’s difficult to get a good photo.
Once I stitched the first line, I just used my foot as a guide, placing the lines about 1/2 inch apart. Then I decided to quilt the corners with rays going outward.
I found backing fabric from the same line on Etsy, and the binding is a piece of fabric (not from The Wordsmith line) from my stash.
I’m Crushing On . . .
Hobbs Cotton batting! I used for the first time on this quilt. Oh my goodness, it is so light, soft and has a wonderful drape! I have no idea why I haven’t used it before this.
This is another UFO finish for me, and I’m pretty happy about that!

I love this quilt, Wendy! (I have some Wordsmith squirreled away for a future project.) Your quilting looks great. You had a productive week!

Thanks, Tracie!

This is a nice soft quilt. I do see the spring colours popping through the snow. Things have warmed up considerably where I am and when that happens early in the season I always worry about trees and birds.
You did a very nice job on the quilting here.

Thanks, Lisa!

YEAH for a finish on Friday. And a cute one too;) The quilting really makes the center onpoint block show nicely

Definitely spring through the snow is visible on this quilt! We have a spring similar to yours in that it is slow coming – in fact – my quilt would require brown for our infamous mud season in NH, VT and ME. I like how you snuck that piece from your stash 😉. The quilting is perfect for this lovely.

Thank you, Kathleen!

lovely quilting that you did on this – what will you be doing with this one – table topper? we had lovely spring weather yesterday – 75 degrees, sun, I opened the windows and the house warmed up to 74! I had windows open all night long!! and woke up to 48 🙁 new it would last – that is our high today! but it felt good for one day

Yes, either a table topper, or draped over a chair. Oh, that warm weather sounds lovely!

Hi Wendy, ignore my email about not being able to see this post, I’m able to through Bloglovin’. OMG, we are shopping sisters because I have the same collection and may have bought it online from MSQ. Wouldn’t it be funny if we were at MSQ at the same time and didn’t know it. I know I was there before you. I love the quilting, great idea, I may have to borrow it.

Thanks, Rose!

Hi Wendy,
What a great UFO finish! I love the colors in the fabric, but I really LOVE your quilting!! It looks great, and that is a great solution for the corners. I have to remember that in the future – I’d better PIN it! Isn’t it great finishing up a UFO?! I’d love to visit MSQC sometime . . . sooner than later. ~smile~ Roseanne

Great little finish Wendy, such a great line of fabric, must look for some! I too LOVE LOVE Hobbs, and am so glad that we got some in our Island Batik package, as well as that I have found it at Michael’s in Canada, AND they often have coupons!!!
piecefulwendy
Thanks, Sandra! The fabric is difficult to find. I got the backing at an Etsy shop. I’ll definitely be using Hobbs now!

I really like the quilting on this one, Wendy! I’ve been pondering ways to quilt my Postcards From Sweden, and this is inspiring 🙂 Love the soft greens, such a pretty fabric line.

Thanks, Louise! Glad I can provide some ideas!

Beautiful quilt! Thanks for the info about Hobbs Cotton Batting – I’m going to try it 🙂
piecefulwendy
Thank you! I think you’ll like the batting; really nice to quilt!

Love the colours and fabric variety in this little quilt, and yes, I can see the snowdrops signalling the end of winter. I do like how you quilted it, especially the corners, nice! I do use Hobbs 80/20, I used to use Warm and Natural but it has become very expensive here in the UK whereas the price of Hobbs remained the same so it can’t possibly be Brexit, strange.

I love this fabric! I don’t think I’ve run across it before. I can definitely see spring peaking out from the snow. Makes me think of when the Easter flowers start poking through the ground and you keep hoping they make it and that another cold spell doesn’t hit. Congrats on your finish, Wendy! Keep them coming 🙂
