Emma’s Zippy Zipper Pouch
One of the things I love most about quilting and the quilt community are the opportunities we have to encourage one another in our craft of sewing and creating. There is nothing more fun or rewarding than teaching someone the joy of creating something from fabric and thread. Yesterday, I had the pleasure of teaching Emma to make her first zipper pouch.
I gave Emma the assignment to pick out three fat quarters, two for the front of the pouch, one for the lining. She did a great job! So when she arrived, we got to work. (Emma’s mom gave me permission to use some of the pictures that she took of Emma’s work.)
First things first, she had to get those fat quarters pressed and ready.
We used the Zipper Pouch tutorial from Missouri Star Quilt Company. It is an easy pouch to make. Emma is fairly new to sewing, but she made this pouch with ease.
Once the pressing was done, it was time to cut.
Although Emma hadn’t done much cutting with a rotary cutter, she got the hang of it quickly.
Once she fused the lining to the batting, Emma sewed the two front pieces together while attaching it to the lining piece.
Then it was time to cut the two pieces for the pouch.
Emma’s was clipping right along, so we took a quick break for lunch. When we came back, she got started with the zipper. I had warned her that the zipper could be a little difficult. Once she had cut the zipper to size and attached the tab on each end, it was time to sew it to one side of the pouch. She did a super job!
Here’s the zipper, all sewn in! Look at that great job!
I love the bright yellow zipper and those flowers! It’s perfect fabric for a pouch!
Once she had sewn around the edges of the pouch, she made the box corners for the bottom. Look at her concentration as she uses a chopstick to get those corners nice and crisp.
But really, it’s this beaming smile that makes it all worth it. Look at the fun little zippy pouch Emma made!
Well done, Emma! It was a joy to teach you!
How about you? Have you ever taught someone to quilt? Did you enjoy it?
Enjoy your day, friends!

What a sweet thing – teaching Emma to sew a bag. I remember fondly those who taught me and it is a real gift to her. I am sure you, too, benefited from helping this young girl.
