Fab Five Ruler Remix
The Fat Quarter Shop is in the mood for Spring, taking some of their old projects and remixing them with a new look. Today I’m sharing the project I made for the Fab Five Ruler Remix.
The Fat Quarter Shop provided me with the Fab Five Ruler for this project. The instructions for the project were included with the ruler.
When I started this project, here in Minnesota we were knee deep and up to our eyeballs in snow and cold temps. Needing sunshine and warmth, I chose to work with bright fabric with a ocean vibe that I had received last year in a Sew Sampler box, a fat eighth bundle of Reef by Elizabeth Hartman.
The backing fabric is from my stash and matches the Reef fabric so well. Who doesn’t like polka dots?
The ruler makes short work of cutting the fat eighths into pieces. Layer the fabric, cut one way, flip the ruler and cut again. The cutting is done quickly by flipping the ruler, and there is very little waste.
There were a few strips left over from the fat eighths. I used those for some other Fab Five Ruler projects, and I’ll show you those in another post.
The layout is simply done according to the instructions. Here’s the piecing in progress.
Once the top was pieced, I used fusible fleece to back the top and did some simple quilting using my walking foot and Aurifil thread in Salmon (#2225).
Using fusible fleece provides a nice base for a pillow top. Here’s the top and back, finished.
Add a pillow form and the pillow is done, measuring 20 inches. It is a quick project, and can be made in so many color ways. My version would look right at home at a cabin or beach house. I’m ready to go with my pillow and a few other items. Spring is here in Minnesota — I’ll meet you out on my sunny deck!

What a lovely cushion. Also like the composition of the photograph. Certainly looks like a faboulous ruler.

Cool ruler! Sunny pillow! What does the 5 refer to? You’re already using your patio?!
piecefulwendy
Had to look up the reason for the name but found nothing. I wonder if it tied in with the Fab Five Ruler Book printed at the time of the release?

What a fun ruler. I may need to add it to my collection. I like your idea about the fusible fleece. I would think it give the pillow a better “feel”.
piecefulwendy
Thanks, and you are right about the fusible!

That EH fabric was perfect to use with the ruler to make a pillow. I gave my bundle to Louise and hopes she sees your post, in fact I’ll send her a message. I like the block, sort of a elongated tumbler. I will check out the ruler even though I’m a die-hard die-cutter.
piecefulwendy
Thanks and yes, give Louise a heads up!

I recognized the fabrics immediately! Such a cute line. Your pillow turned out great, Wendy. And you always do such a nice job with your photos!
piecefulwendy
Thanks, Louise! Rose said you’d recognize the fabrics. I love them!

Ah, summer colors! Love this Wendy. Really pretty and just makes me think of you sitting on your deck with a good book, lemonade and this pillow!! Soon, very soon!
piecefulwendy
Thanks, Bernie! We have sun, and the temps are rising, so yes, soon!

Great ruler and a fun project. I love the colors and I love that line of fabric. It was a terrible way to usher in spring.
piecefulwendy
I agree, it was a brutal transition! Thanks!

I remember when you mentioned wanting to improve your blog photography. Do you have resources you can recommend. You’ve inspired me to do a better job with my own, and so I’m wondering where you got your ideas.
piecefulwendy
I do. I wrote a post on it awhile ago, but I’ll email you with some ideas.

That’s a great pillow! Fun fabric and I liked the ruler/shapes, too. I bought a tumbler ruler a few years back with every intention of making a tumbler quilt, but then got frustrated because my pieces never lined up quite right, so were always a bit off from each other. Do you have any tips for how to make the rows straight?
piecefulwendy
Oh, I think I can help with that. Just need to double check my method.

Hi Wendy! So the Fab Five Ruler is a wedge shape. This pillow looks just fabulous!! I love the fabric choices, and backing because who doesn’t like polka dots?!! I wish I would have thought about the fusible fleece for the pillow shams I had to make. That would make a great little cushion and add a little puff to the front piece. Spectacular. ~smile~ Roseanne
piecefulwendy
Thanks, Roseanne!

I love all those fabrics you used!! I have so many rulers I tell myself not to buy more I have not used some of them yet
piecefulwendy
Thanks! I have a few unused rulers too!
