Fireburst Finish
Finally, I have my Fireburst finish to show you! I enjoyed this mystery quilt hosted by Tish over at The Madd Quilter. You’ll want to visit Tish to see the parade of Fireburst quilts, if you haven’t already. Take a peek at mine first, before you go!
While I could have had some fun with my walking foot and this quilt design, I needed to keep the quilting simple. This quilt is heading back to Florida with my daughter so she can give it as a baby gift.
It all started with that center design. Tish had done this, I think, on one of her quilts, and I liked how it looked. The Fireburst design makes me think of those fireworks that spiral as they go up, and then burst into sparkles. That became the inspiration for this design.
In the photo above, you can see the wavy lines radiating from the center square. I used a Serpentine stitch on my sewing machine for this. It worked pretty slick. A chalk pencil was helpful for drawing guidelines radiating out from the center square.
I used a soft yellow, Aurifil #3910, for the quilting. It blends nicely, but adds just a touch of color to the front of the quilt. Warm & Natural White cotton batting worked well for this quilt, and added quite a bit of crinkle after washing.
My fabrics for the quilt came from Bernie’s shop over at Needle and Foot.
Oddly, I never noted the fabric details in my previous posts. If you want to know them, let me know and I’ll check with Bernie.
Here’s a photo showing the quilt all crinkly after washing. I’m not sure I like the crinkly, to be honest.
Here’s the back after washing.
I’m so glad I managed to get this done before my daughter heads back.
Meanwhile, my quilting assistant was hard at work, on squirrel alert . . .
It’s a high stress job, apparently.
Notice I even coordinated my cat with my quilt room and chair. We are amused at how much he blends in with our floors, our living room rug, my quilt room chair. We are always looking for him when he’s right under our nose. He’s very vocal, so we usually hear him first.
What about you? What kind of progress did you make this week?
Wendy

I don’t have a quilting assistant but there are days I could curl up and watch squirrels.

Me too! Haha!

I like Tish’s pattern and your quilt. I wish I would have made one! Has Mr. Cat disclosed his choice of a name yet?
piecefulwendy
Thanks, Tracie! You can always make one now. I’d enjoy seeing your version. No name yet…

Your quilt looks great, nice mom you are 😉 . I started a five fat quarter quilt, and a purse.
piecefulwendy
Thanks, Vicki! A fat quarter quilt sounds fun. Is it another of your purse pattern?
Barbara
It turned out great. I love those fabrics. Your kitty looks very comfortable.
piecefulwendy
Thanks, Barbara. He’s pretty chill.

well I hope to make progress today on the borders for my mystery quilt I must say I have had one interruption after another the last 3 days – I’m about ready to shut my phone off but I can’t as someone is having medical problems – but how I hope it stays quiet today. Love the cat – it is a hard job keeping up with those squirrels

Hey! For some reason, posts don’t always should up in my WP Reader until much later. Annoying. Especially when you have a fabulous finish to share!! What a great quilting job, but I’m distracted by Wilbur – or did you change his name? Squirrel alert IS a huge job, and it is tiring. You would know that, of course, since Sandra and I recently gave you the title of Squirrel Grand Poobah. HAHA! Back to the quilting goodness – I love what you did in that center block. And then the radiating lines out from there is perfection. Happy Friday to you, friend (or squirrel sharer). ~smile~ Roseanne

Squirrel Grand Poobah!! Hahaha! Thanks, Roseanne for the encouragement and the laughs!

I love the squiggly lines bursting from the center! Great way to quilt this piece, Wendy. And Mr. Kitty looks like he’s settled right into being boss of those darned squirrels 🙂
piecefulwendy
Thank you, Louise!

I think your Fireburst quilt is delightful! It will make a great baby gift! I always wish my machine had that serpentine stitch – I would use it a lot. I like the way you have the quilting radiating out from the center!
piecefulwendy
Thanks, Diann! I use it more than I thought I would!
Rose Mikulski
I love the quilting but don’t quite understand your explanation of how you did it. Maybe if I send you my top you can repeat this and send it back to me so I can see in person what you’re saying. Really laughing while I’m typing this…….
piecefulwendy
Hahaha! Well, if you’re willing to wait another I don’t know how many months for it!

Love your version of Fireburst! Beautiful fabrics, and I like the quilting radiating out. I may do something similar on a mini I’m working on.
piecefulwendy
Thanks, Emily! I look forward to seeing your mini!

This is such a pretty version of this quilt Wendy. I really like that central motif and the radiating lines. Like you I always like quilts best when they are crisp but they all have to get wrinkly sometime , I guess just like us.
piecefulwendy
Thank you, Lisa, and you’re right, wrinkles always come at some point!
Kathleen McCormick
I love what you did! So much fun with the center motif and the squiggle lines. Do you have a 9mm machine? Love the exhausted squirrel catcher – sewing supervisor. Maybe if we choose cats and fabric are alike – we pick the colors we wear and that “go with us”. Glad he lets you know wwhere he is!
piecefulwendy
Thanks, Kathleen, and yes, I have a 9mm.
Preeti
A fiery little cracker of a finish!!!
piecefulwendy
Thanks, Preeti!

Wendy, your fireburst quilt is sew lovely — the fabrics are perfect for that design! I love the radiating quilting design!
Tish
Congrats on finishing!!! I love that you used a serpentine line radiating from the center. That’s really cool! Have you landed on a name for baby boy yet? He’s so handsome.
Bernie
How did I miss this post??? Your quilt turned out great Wendy. Like you, I am torn between the fresh, crisp new quilt and the crinkled washed quilt. New looks so pretty but it isn’t yet cozy. They are much more usable and cuddly once washed. The serpentine stitch was a great choice – my machine doesn’t have that option but I love seeing it on so many quilts.
piecefulwendy
Thanks, Bernie! I think we both did a great job on our finishes! It’s been fun to see the variety of finished!

I am with you on the crinkly thoughts! My preference is the smoother look most of the time, so I delay washing until taking a picture of my quilt projects. Your color choices are terrific.

Thanks, Connie! I had this one marked with chalk lines, otherwise I would’ve taken a smooth shot. It needed to be washed before it was gifted.
