Flashback Friday

It’s Flashback Friday today, and I have an oldie to show you. I was a little surprised to realize this quilt is 14 years old!

Flashback Friday - Whacked Insanity, my first stack and whack quilt that I made way back in 2004 - piecefulthoughts.com

This quilt was made back in my early days of quilting in 2004. Most of the quilts I made at that time were much more subdued, featuring earthy, deep tones. I remember thinking I had really gotten a little wild with these colors.

My plan was to give this quilt away as a baby quilt. I think it would’ve made the poor tyke cross-eyed!

Of Course It has a Name

Surprisingly, I even named the quilt.  Whacked Insanity seemed to be fitting for this quilt made using the Stack and Whack method that I thought was weird, but fun. Probably not a fitting name for a baby quilt though!

The quilt measures 36 inches by 48 inches. Those black, white, and bold colors have really held up well.

The backing is just as bright and bold as the front. You can see a peek of the quilting that Connie did on the quilt. I love the big spheres!

Some of those fabrics are still in my scrap stash and, yes, I’ve been using them!

I really think I need to find a place for this quilt to be out in the open, don’t you?

Have a great weekend, friends! Have you ever made a Stack and Whack quilt? Tell me about it!

Linking up today with Sandra’s Throwback Thursday at mmm!Quilts and whooping it up with Sarah at Confessions of a Fabric Addict.

Time seems to pass so quickly, I too am amazed at how long ago I created some quilts. Maybe the saying “times flies when you’re having fun” applies here. Linda

This quilt is great…and I totally understand how you thought you were living on the wild side when you made this. Isn’t it fun to see how our tastes in fabrics change over time? I used to buy reproduction fabrics only but now I buy modern and bright fabrics. The reproductions sit on my shelf and beg to be used…maybe for a backing or something!?

    Hi Wendy,
Wow, that quilt has held up great. I love the bright colors, especially bordered by the black. I haven’t ever made a stack/wack quilt – this pattern kind of reminds me of a windowpane and what you might see looking out. I am 100% sure a baby would love it – all those colors to see and focus on. Happy Friday, friend. ~smile~ Roseanne

Wow so Connie has been LA’ing for a long time too. I love the bold colors and yes get this one out! I did a stack and whack a long time ago. A friend and I got together and made the blocks and then they just sat there as I was going to make them into a vest(when vests were popular). After several years I decided they should be in a quilt and it was, then I donated it:)

Hi Wendy, I love the colors in your quilt, they are so vibrant its hard to believe the quilt is 14 years old. I’m currently working on a stack and whack quilt – not using Karla Alexander’s technique but something similar.

Fourteen years go by quickly! I think it looks lovely on the porch or even as a small table topper. The unusual colors are fun and it did show your inner bright tendencies waiting to be revealed!

I think it looks like a completely new improv piece, and of course I love those bright colors. Your stack and whack had a lot of cuts, so the blocks ended up quite interesting and complicated. The one I made was much simpler 🙂

Well, I think you could have said that you made this one yesterday and that you’ve been really busy, and we would have believed you! It looks pretty contemporary to me. 🙂 I’m glad it’s out, I hope you find somewhere to enjoy it.

This is really wild. I like it and it makes me think of a sort of modern stained glass piece. Funny how our tastes change over time – but that is with everything, clothing, styles, color etc. Life might get boring otherwise.

Ha, I know what you mean about considering those colours wild; I preferred the soft hues, or the dark rich ones too… Now I just know that I love love LOVE colour. Period. All kinds, hues, shades, tints, whatever. The combinations. Yep I made a bunch of Bethany Reynolds’ Stack n Whack but I think it’s different than these…is this maybe Stack the deck? Bethany’s were with large prints and made kaleidoscopes and I taught the class several times in my guild and at my LQS way back then too! Thank you for linking this up!

This was based on a different version. So it’s basically Wendy’s improv stack and whack. 😂
