Frank’s Hideaway

Let’s start the week off with a finish, shall we? Frank’s Hideaway has been lounging on my design wall for quite a few weeks while I finished up the Minnesota Seal quilt. Finally, on Friday, I decided to finish it up.

This quilt all started with those two little center blocks, left over improv bits from other projects. I pulled some random strips of green fabrics and created borders around those two little blocks. It made me think of a little cabin in the trees. The “cabin” looks so angular and unusual, I decided it is my improv nod to Frank Lloyd Wright houses, so I cheekily named the quilt Frank’s Hideaway. The little quilt continued to grow as I added another border and then I thought it was done. Then the dark green strips just seemed to need to be added, along with those little triangle bits.

For the backing, I stitched four fat quarters together. They are Fossil Fern fat quarters that I have had for an age, so it’s good to be able to use them for the back.

For the batting, I used Warm & Natural White because I had it on hand in the right size. For the quilting, I decided to just go with wavy quilting. I had other quilting ideas in my head, but none of them seemed to fit. Wavy quilting is fun and relaxing to do, so it went quickly.

I added a few little scrap bits to the binding, just for fun. I did have to clip the binding to the quilt before stitching, to be sure I had those little bits in the right places (and not on a corner!).

Frank’s Hideaway measures 28″ square, and was pieced from improv scraps. You’d think there would be at least a little dent in my scraps, but nope! Guess I’ll have to make a few more improv quilts!

Happy Monday, all!

Wendy
