Heading North
I’m happy to share with you my version of Heading North, a pattern designed by Sandra Walker (mmmQuilts) and released today in her Etsy shop!
I was delighted when Sandra asked me if I would test this pattern for her. I’ve made several of Sandra’s patterns, and they are easy to follow and professionally done. This one is no exception.
I like this pattern because it lends itself well to playing with various colors of fabric – use a neutral background or colored, go with a color family for the blocks, or mix it up with different colors. It is a fun design to play with. The blocks also sew up quickly, so it’s one of those great designs to have on hand for those times when you need to make a quilt on short notice.
I chose to make the lap size version of Heading North (51-1/2″ square). For my fabrics, I chose to work with Grunge fabrics in Ash (background), Horizon Blue (dark teal), Bachelor (light teal), Zesty Apple (dark olive), along with a light olive, which is from the Thatched line by Robin Pickens. The photo below shows the colors of the quilt a little better.
Please visit Sandra over and read her blog post about her release of Heading North. She will have much more information to share with you, and her posts are always fun to read! Plus, she will have links to the others who tested this pattern for her, so you can see their quilts! The link to her post is here.
From now until Sunday, November 6th, Sandra will be offering the Heading North pattern at 30% off. The link to Sandra’s Etsy shop is here.
Thank you, Sandra, for letting me test Heading North! What a fun quilt to make!

Your choice of colours are great! The Grunge fabrics work so well for Sandra’s design.

Love your color choices. Olive isn’t a color that I would have used, but it really shines and adds balance to the others.

Great color choices. I can see where this would be a fast quilt to work with in many color schemes.

Nice choice of colors, and they look so good against that Grunge. The quilting is beautiful. When I first saw your title, I thought you meant you were traveling north – lol!

It makes me smile when I see connections – when one blog friend in her corner of the world is working with another blog friend in a different corner of the world.

there was certainly plenty of room on that for quilting to show up wasn’t there – it looks great.

Your version of Sandra’s pattern is beautiful, Wendy! I love it in the colors you chose, and all the Grunge, too – gives it lots of texture. I’ll have to go visit the other pattern testers, too – it’s always fun to see the different versions!

It’s such a versatile pattern. I see different things based on the coloration used in each quilt. Yours looks a bit like Christmas trees tipping along to me. 🙂

Those colours Wendy! Wonderful. Thank you so much for making this, and for noticing that one tiny but so annoying error! Thank you for the kind words about my patterns as well; I very much appreciate that!

Hi Wendy! Love these fabrics and how nicely they play together. It’s a great representation of Sandra’s pattern. I love both olive shades with the turquoise! Spectacular. {{Hugs}} ~smile~ Roseanne

It does look like a fun one for color play–I’m thinking of color combos already–and to pop out fairly quickly, esp as a baby quilt. (And not too busy so it would make a good one for baby photos from above!). Lovely quilt Wendy!

Oooh Wendy! This version of Sandra’s new pattern is just stunning with your fabric and colour choices. I see your header photo shows some quilting lines. Does that mean you’ll have a finish to show off soon? 😉

Fantastic colors Wendy!!! I like your block placement too. Really nice version – Sandra sure has a lot of nice patterns. I have two of hers and have not yet made them. Sigh.
