Holiday Pillow
My holiday pillow is both a Friday finish and a Drop Everything and Make It (DrEAMi) project. It was a fun afternoon of sewing and all the fabrics used were in my stash. I love that, don’t you?
The pillow pattern is Missing Link by Sarah Scott, which can be found in Issue 31 of Make Modern magazine.
The fabrics I used are from a fat quarter bundle of Merrily by Gingiber. I wasn’t sure about using green for the background, but it goes better in my home than if I had used a lighter background.
I used the same quilting design as shown on the pattern. The grid lines complete the design well. I think it could be fun to do straight line quilting in the links and another design in the background, too.
The 18-inch pillow, in these colors, has a bit of retro vibe. Tracie (Riceford Streams) gave me the tip to use this 20-inch pillow form with an 18-inch pillow cover. It fills it well, has a nice fluffy feel and the cost can’t be beat. I’ve had this pillow form in use for quite awhile and it doesn’t lose its shape, no matter how much you punch it or bend it, etc.
Do you ever pick up a piece of yardage, just knowing it will work for something? The backing fabric for this pillow, which matched the green very well, was one of those fabrics. I’m so delighted that the color and design of this fabric match the front. Cool, huh?
I love it when a good plan comes together. In the book, The Artist’s Way (Julia Cameron), the author calls that “synchronocity”. For one afternoon, the squirrels in my quilt room sychronized, and we had a blast.
I hope you are experiencing some synchronocity of your own today!
One more photo, just ‘cuz.

Your pillow is a fun Christmas finish! I like the Gingiver fabrics, too. And I do love those feather pillows. I snuggled up with mine all week while reading Inspector Gamache.

Synchronicity – I love that! I love your pillow, too. The design is really neat, and I like the colors and quilting you did. I’ve never tried squishing a 20 inch pillow form into an 18 inch cover, but may have to now! Happy Friday finish!

Oh, that’s very cute! Love pattern of interlocking squares.

Great pillow! The straight line quiting works well. I have issue 31 and like the original pillow, but your fabric choice gives it a fresh look.

Great, modern holiday pillow! It turned out really nice, Wendy. And I can see why you just had to buy the tiny quarter log cabin pattern fabric 🙂

I love it. It’s nice that it’s Christmas but it doesn’t scream Christmas. Yes I love it when you can use your stash.

Hi Wendy! Nice, nice, NICE. Love those fabrics . . . and that backing is just perfect for this pillow. Huh – a 20″ pillow form for an 18″ pillow cover?! That’s a great tip to share. Great squirrelly finish. ~smile~ Roseanne

Oh I love it Wendy! And the backing yasss! Speaking of synchronicity, I will have to look up the date of issue 31 as this design is so very similar to my Ladder Links design which was published in modern by the yard ezine this summer!

good choices on this!

Love this because it is festive but not overly Christmas-y. It could stay out all winter long. Very cozy. I never would have thought to use a form that is larger than the cover. That seems like it wouldn’t work – so thanks for sharing this bit of info!

Someone already mentioned how it’s Christmasy but doesn’t scream Christmas. I like that your baking fabric looks like trees. And the design is a great bold geometric pattern. (Belated) thanks for linking up with me for TGIFF!
