I Like Thursday #42
My I Like Thursday #42 post has a new view, thanks to our quick trip to Door County this week. The above photo was taken from the deck of our stay at a bed & breakfast in Algoma, Wisconsin. We enjoyed that beautiful view of Lake Michigan (lakeside, not bayside) as we enjoyed our light dinner of wine and cheese.
The grounds crew kept us fairly entertained. They were quite busy, but once their job was done, they toodled off into the water for an evening swim. I was so busy watching them, I didn’t think to snap a photo.
Our room had a Northwoods theme. I’m a little puzzled by this creature atop the moose – mouse or squirrel? Maybe the mice in Wisconsin are bushy-tailed? Thought you’d get a chuckle out of it too.
Tuesday morning, bright and early, this was my view. It was cherry picking day. Many of the orchards were already picked out for the season, so we were fortunate to find this one.
Two hours and ten bags of cherries later, we are done and ready to have them pitted. We were a bit surprised to find that they didn’t have a pitter except on Fridays. Uh-oh. No worries, though, they sent us to another orchard who were gracious enough to pit them for us even though their season was done.
Once the cherries were picked and pitted, we headed for home. That evening, BigJ got busy and finished his brandied cherries. These lovelies will bask in this sunny window for a few weeks. Fingers crossed none of the jars pop. Messy business, that.
While you are reading this post on Thursday, I’ll be picking up five 10-pound boxes of blueberries. We’ll freeze those, so that’s what I will be working on this weekend.
Hope you enjoyed my I Like Thursday #42 post and the tour of our cherry picking. I’m joining in with LeeAnna of Not Afraid of Color and the rest of my ILT friends who post each week. You can find all of our links over at LeeAnna’s blog. Do stop by and leave a comment or two!

Cherries and now blueberries, I’m coming to your house this coming winter.

After pitting four pounds of cherries, I can appreciate the need for automation! I didn’t know the orchards did that. Now I want to visit one and see it in operation. Enjoy freezing blueberries! That’s my favorite fruit to stockpile.

Those are some beautiful cherries. I think we’re about finished with cherries in our part of the world. Ours have been finished for a couple of weeks, but there are still some growing out in the Gorge. I think those are probably about finished now too. Peaches will be next, although I’m told a freeze in March kind of did-in this year’s crop.

oh wow they pit them for you ! I didn’t realize that. Even though I lived near Door County years ago we never went to pick cherries – family didn’t have time for anything we didn’t grow ourselves. So the cherries sit in brandy for weeks and then what – made into cherry brandy – are the cherries tossed and then brandy bottled?

Brandied cherries! Sounds awesome! I had no idea you could pick cherries and then have them pitted! Fresh fruit in our area is so expensive! We do get peaches from Colorado and soon melons from South Dakota that show up at fruit trucks in parking lots. Not sure how that will go in this year of weirdness! I’m reluctant to stand shoulder to shoulder with strangers, touching fruit!

Lucky for you that Big J made his own brandied cherries, did he clean up after himself? I thought you were going to pick blueberries, where are you getting these from?

Hi Wendy! Wow, that is a lot of cherries. I can’t imagine having to pit them yourself. I hope sweet Wilbur doesn’t both the brandied cherries. Their pretty color might just tempt him! YUM to fresh blueberries. I adore them for breakfast on yogurt or in muffins or any ‘ole way. ~smile~ Roseanne

I’m thinking we’ll have to taste those brandied cherries! 🙂

Wow, Wendy, what a view! That sounds like a nice getaway, even if it did involve picking cherries! I think you’ve probably mentioned this before, but what do you do with the brandied cherries? Fresh picked blueberries – yum! We got to do that once in Vermont, and there’s nothing better. Hope you’re having a great day!

Great view and funny room ornaments! I love the look of the cherries basking in the sun and will dream of these. I didn’t know orchards had pitters for you so you could then go directly to work. Learned something new today.

So you are sending Brandied cherries to all the I Like Thursday Bloggers right? 😀 Looks like a nice B & B and your entertainment was obviously awesome. I am going to call the critter a pack rat.

I’ve never tried brandied cherries before. They sound delicious! The B & B looks so picturesque. I’m glad you had a short get-away. I’m assuming Wilbur stayed home! Take care, Mary.

I’m really trying to be happy for you and jealous of you for having all those cherries! That’s not something that usually grows down here. Mmmm…. I do hope you enjoy every single bite!
Helen
Add a “not” jealous up there in that comment…

Ah, those rare Wisconsin Bushy-Tailed Mice! Looks like quite the haul of cherries and sounds like you had blueberries comingyour way as well! Yum!

Sounds like a wonderful trip! We always enjoy watching the waterfowl, especially the Canada geese. I guess if you have grassy lawn that they might not be a favorite bird, but seeing them in the water is a treat for us 🙂

Ok-now I’m hungry. Between the cherries and other berries that sounds yummy. What a cool vacation spot.

Pitting cherries seems like messy tedious business. I imagine they have a way of doing it quickly. I think the creature atop the moose is a mini squirrel. =)

What a gorgeous place to visit, relax and a surprise as I read on…berry pick! My mouth is watering looking at those lovely jars with all that gorgeous colour. Good luck with the blueberries too. What treats!

Hi Wendy, envy envy envy here. First, oh to wake up to a view like that. All those cherries, and blueberries. I wouldn’t like to pit all those cherries, but I’d love to have the opportunity.
