I Like Thursday Kitchen Edition

I decided to call this my I Like Thursday Kitchen Edition, because the I Like Thursday group, hosted by LeeAnna of Not Afraid of Color, is trying something a bit different. Each week, LeeAnna is giving us a theme to write about. This week, she’s asking us to share our favorite kitchen tool. Thus the reason for my kitchen edition.

When I’m in the mood, I enjoy taking my time prepping a meal. I like to pull out my chef’s knife and chop the onions, garlic, veggies. Sometimes, however, I like to get things done a bit quicker, and that’s where this handy tool comes in.

Kuhn Rikon food chopper, a favorite tool in my kitchen - piecefulthoughts.com

This is my Kuhn Rikon food chopper. I’ve had it for so many years, I cannot remember how I actually came to own it.

It’s a pretty simple set up – two sharp little rotating blades, powered by a pull cord.

My main use for this gadget is chopping up onions and garlic, but I use it for other foods as well. Even after all these years, those blades are still sharp. I drop the onions and garlic in, and pull the cord. The more I pull, the smaller the chop. Before you know it, you’re done!

Clean up is simple, too. The top with the cord cannot be immersed in water, so I wipe it down good with a damp cloth. Occasionally I do some deep cleaning around the edges if I notice any buildup. Usually the wipe does well enough. I rinse the blades and bowl immediately after chopping, making the final wash so much easier. The blades and bowl are also dishwasher safe, but I usually just clean them in the sink.

This was a handy tool when our kids were young; they enjoyed pulling the cord to cut the food, and I didn’t have to worry about them cutting themselves. The base of the bowl is non-slip, too, so it was easy for them to hold on while pulling the cord.

If you’re curious what all that red onion and garlic is being used for, I’m making Hoison Sloppy Joes. They were delicious, and so simple to make! I got the recipe from Barbara over at Cat Patches. You can find the recipe in her fun post here

The food chopper is still available on Amazon, along with several other varieties. If you search “Kuhn Rikon Food Chopper” it should pop up.

The Weekly Wilbs

Of course, I can’t finish my Thursday post without a photo of Wilbs! He’s been sleeping so much lately due to the heat, that it’s been hard to catch a photo.

A little chin scratching on my computer by Wilbs - piecefulthoughts.com

The corner of my laptop screen is a nifty spot for a chin scratching. Plus, it’s a good way to send the message that he wants some attention! (If he scratches just right, it closes the laptop – haha!

Happy Thursday, all! For more I Like Thursday Kitchen Edition, head over to Not Afraid of Color and read the posts from the others in the group. We’re all listed on LeeAnna’s site!

That’s a keen little tool! Sometimes those oldies in our kitchens are the best. I tend to not use fresh garlic because I hate smashing or chopping it, so I just use the powder, but it’s not the same. I needed that shot of Wilbs. My cats do that chin scratch on everything!

Your chopper looks like a great tool! I think we’re all in agreement that chopping onions and garlic is not a favorite chore. I saw Barbara’s recipe for the sloppy joes and was interested to try it. Glad to know you liked it! Cute picture of Wilbur – pay attention to me, Mom!

That is a cute chopper…gonna look that one up. It is the thing I hate the most. Now to look at that recipe, too. I love that cats always find interesting places to get that itch scratched. Glad Wilbs likes your computer screen!

Wilbs is adorable of course, and I love the chopper, I’ve never had a chopper and I know lots of people love them!

That’s a cool chopper. If I’m doing a big load of stuff, I use the the food processor. But I hate the cleanup. The smaller stuff, I use a knife. I sure would like to get me a chopper. I think I have an Amazon gift card! As for Wilbs, I don’t blame him for lazing away the hot part of the days. Have a great day.

Wendy, you just reminded I have a similar chopper and don’t use it. Out of sight out of mind for me. It’s nice for those onions that bring tears to your eyes.
    Have a lovely weekend.

Wow, your petunias are beautiful!!! Handy chopper! I got something like that from the State Fair guy!?! Wilbs is adorbs, as always!

What a neat chopper. I have one of those slap type choppers. I wore the original out, and now have one from Pampered Chef which comes apart to clean better. Good to see you Wilbs. The cats all went to live with the daughter up North, I couldn’t separate them all.

That’s an interesting gadget, Wendy! I have two different mini choppers. One is a small plug-in food processor and the other is “people powered” like yours, but without a string to pull. It’s been a quite some time since I’ve used either of them, but I refused to declutter them before or after the move.

Very cute Wilbs there. Neddy will rest his head on my keyboard and look up at me when he wants to say that’s enough of that. He’s the strong, silent type. LOL Meanwhile, what a great little gadget in that chopper. I would love to have one of those to chop the stinkier stuff. I’m going to check that out. Thanks, Wendy.

Hi Wendy! That is a nifty looking chopper and so cool that it doesn’t use electricity. I never heard of a pull cord on a chopper. I guess I need to get out more! HAHA! And Wilbs – well, he wants YOU scratching his chin not your laptop. Happy Friday to you! {{Hugs}} ~smile~ Roseanne

HiWendy. Thanks for the great chopper suggestion. I tried to look up the recipe but need a subscription? Your flowers are gorgeous. Wilbs as always can make me smile. 😉
