Pieceful Life

I Like Thursdays #29

Welcome to this week’s I Like Thursdays #29 post. I chose the above photo as my featured photo as a reminder to be kind and nurturing to our souls during this strange time in our world. This plaque was made for me by a good friend from my church. I had no idea he was making it, he just surprised me with it one Sunday. It is a favorite item in my quilt room.

Between sheltering and snowstorms, I haven’t gone out much, so I have no likes from my wanderings. This week, I thought I’d share a few items I have in my quilt room that I like. Some I’ve had for years, some are new.

I love these Stand & Stow bins for my sewing notions - piecefulthoughts.com

When I received my larger Stand & Stow holder, I didn’t think I’d ever use it. It has become one of my favorite items. It can hold pens, rulers, scissors, sewing feet – anything that can be stuck in those slots. The items are much easier to grab, and take up less room on my sewing table.

This pottery mug is one of the oldest items in my quilt room. It has held my pens and scissors for as long as I can remember - piecefulthoughts.com

This pottery mug has been with me since the early 80s, when I picked it up from a seconds bin at a pottery shop in St. Paul. Unfortunately, I cannot recall the name of the artist who made it. It has held my pens, pencils, scissors and other odd sewing tools for as long as I can remember.

This teddy bear was made by a woman I used to work with, and given to me by a very dear friend. - piecefulthoughts.com

This teddy has an interesting story for me. This was given to me by a very close friend of mine. It was made by a woman we both knew. I recall being at the maker’s house years before I received the bear and long before I began quilting. She gave me a tour of her sewing space, and I recall thinking – how cool would it be to have a room  with all this fabric! So this bear reminds me that dreams do come true.  He sits atop a ladder of generational quilts – one made by my grandmother, one by my mother, and the top one made by me. The ladder was made by my brother using wood from my uncle’s barn.

Be Joyful Always - piecefulthoughts.com

This jar is full of thread spools used by my grandmother and BigJ’s grandmother. I have a rich heritage of sewing in my family. The sign is a favorite, to remind me to choose joy. Appropriately tucked next to that jar, you might notice some squirrel fabric, waiting it’s turn when the time is just right!

Before I wrap up I Like Thursdays #29, I have to share one thing that makes me chuckle a bit. I loved my mom; she was Scandinavian to the core. She was not adventurous in her cooking, but she was a good cook; however, I wouldn’t say that our food was ever spicy. This recipe just cracks me up. Feel free to make it for dinner – you might have to spice it up a bit. Ha!

wonderful likes. My grandmother was from Finland and the most precious thing I have from her is her cinnamon bun recipe. I miss her still and she’s been gone more than 35 years.

I won one of those Stash and Stores, and I’m with you–I thought I didn’t need it, but now that I have it, I love it! Love that sign your friend surprised you with!

  • karenfae

I have thought of getting one of the little storage options that you show and probably will next time I order something and add it to the order

Good morning, Wendy! I am searching for likes myself this week. I’ll have to search around the house to see what I can come up with. I recall traveling throughout England and the one thing that really struck me was how bland the food was. Take care, my friend. ~smile~ Roseanne

I love that Wednesday is the new Thursday in the coronavirus times! The ladder and the bear story are priceless. I love my storage thingy too; gave some to quilting friends one year. The squirrel fabric next to Joy- perfect! Happy Thursday!

You had me convinced it was Thursday and I couldn’t understand why Roseann hadn’t blogged, too. So many wonderful things to be thankful for. I love the generational sewing quilting in your family. You have certainly continued the trend.

I love this peak into your favorite things in your sewing space, Wendy! That sign in the header is amazing! What a thoughtful gift. Your recipe card did indeed make me laugh–nothing spicy there! I still recall a radio commercial for a particular type of Gedny’s pickles: “If you are one of the 49 people north of the Mason-Dixon line who like spicy foods, this pickle is for you!” Always made us laugh (and my mom was one of those 49 people)

Your stash and store is prettier than what I use, an ice cube tray-that makes the cylinder cubes. We both have sewing generations in our family, what a wonderful thing for them to have passed down to us.

What a great list of likes to share with all of us. Your recipe is identical to my Mom’s splattered, stained stew recipe card in her pink file card holder. My daughter has it now. I like that she was interested enough to ask for it. Now she can make my old family favourites. Please share more photos of your generational quilts. I’m sure you must have before but the peek at them has me intrigued.

Garlic AND thyme?? Too spicy for me! Ha ha, just kidding! It actually looks quite tasty. I’ve been meaning to make a stew. Maybe I’ll try your Mom’s secret recipe 🙂

I miss wandering, don’t you?! I’ve been thinking about that lately – what exactly am I missing? And it’s just that – being out and about and doing whatever. Oh well, it will come back! Meanwhile, it was fun to have a peek at special things in your sewing room!

  • txquiltgal

Loved the look at your special things! My Mom had a recipe very similar to that she called “Wonderful Stew”. It is funny what was considered spicy “back in the day”. When Mom got adventurous, she served a hamburger stroganoff-type sauce over Chinese crispy noodles – lol! But I loved everything she made. 🙂

Great post Wendy– I loved the stories behind the bear and thread jar! Your word art sentiments are great daily reminders! I’ve wondered about the stand and stow holder glad to see you like yours!

  • laemperatrizgmailcom

That recipe is fantastic! Love seeing different people’s definition of “spicy” 🙂 And I love your old man pottery mug. Most of my pens and markers and tools in my sewing room are stored in mugs and pottery from over time and they all have fun memories!

LOL. That’s spicy stew? That mug makes me instantly think of the Renaissance Festival. 🙂 That plaque is really cute. What a nice surprise!

  • Quilting is in my Blood

That plaque is wonderful! And I could definitely put a stand & stow holder to good use! I did get a chuckle out of your mom’s spicy beef soup recipe. Living in New Mexico, I’ve definitely gotten used to a fair amount of heat! Take care, Mary.

My smile for the week came when the 2 yr old down the street was out walking with his Mom and came up on our front porch to see the teddy bears I had placed in the windows and the ceramic bunnies that were sitting on the window ledge. Seeing his delight was a joy. You have some wonderful inspirational quilting objects.

  • lapaylor

    oh how cool

I laughed with you at the spices, I grew up with salt and pepper as all one needed. Oh and bacon fat

  • quiltedblooms

Love the bear and ladder stories! Funny, I read the recipe and wondered where the “spice” was and then I read your caption. I will give her credit for typing the recipe card though!

The frame is beautiful. You must have giving more to so many people and touched so many hearts that is why you were that as a surprise gift too. The circle of positive karma.
