Improv and More
A few weeks ago, I joined some other quilters from the area for an improv class. It was a fun evening. Several of those attending had never tried it, so it was great to see them give it a go for the first time. The purpose of the class was just to work on improv pieces, not to leave the class with a finished quilt.
I made a few improv curves, blocks and flying geese. I had bunch of scraps from my stash and just worked from them. Then I got a bit more creative.
What is that going to be? I have no idea yet, so I’ll work on it a bit more and see where it takes me.
Since my Postcard from Sweden quilt top is done and I have left over fabric, I decided to work on some more improv. There is something very relaxing about putting these pieces together. This is where I’m at so far.
I do have some thoughts on where I’m going with these, but we’ll see if I stick with it.
Another project that I am working on slowly, are these little HSTs.
These are the leftover triangles from the Squiggles quilt. I am squaring them to 1-1/2 inch. It’s a little crazy, because there are a bunch of them, but I just can’t bear to toss those yummy little pieces though!
Coming Up!
On Saturday, I’m taking a Spin Class from Amanda Jean of Crazy Mom Quilts. I’m looking forward to spending the day learning from her, and stitching with friends. I’m doing some prep. Here’s a peek at the scraps I’m bringing along. They are from the Fossil Fern line from Benartex. I’ve had them for quite awhile and I’m ready to get them off my shelf and into a quilt. Hopefully they will work for the pattern I’ve chosen.
What about you? What have you been working on this week?
See you Friday, friends!
Wendy

I’m going stir crazy NOT working on anything until the renovation project in my sewing room is done. Improv doesn’t work that well for me. I enjoy making off kilter blocks with the scraps , but I don’t enjoy trying to figure out how to put them together. I am eager to se what you do with the Postcard from Sweden scraps. Improv is so hard for me! From the looks from all your blocks and bits, it comes quite easy to you! Well done! Have fun in your class with Amanda Jean!

You’ve been very productive with those improv blocks! That will be a super fun class with Amanda Jean. I have some fossil ferns that need attention, too. I’m working on that red & white BH quilt. Almost there.

Thanks for sharing all these yummy bright pieces of future quilts. They are so fun. I still haven’t worked creative sessions into my life even though it’s a goal for this year. Enjoy your class with Amanda Jean. It will be wonderful I’m sure.

Hi Wendy,
It sounds like you will be having fun in Amanda’s class, and you’ll be working with some pretty fabrics! I’ve not tried improv but I suspect it would be hard for me. I’m a follow-the-rules-or-pattern type of person. You are doing great though and I cannot wait to see where your block go. Your little HSTs look so cute – I’m glad you are rescuing them – they need a home, too. ~smile~ Roseanne

can be fun can’t it. I did a piece awhile back with a six inch hexie and put a lot of pieces together and then cut out in hexie shape and put 7 of them together for a mat

I can see you were having lots of fun doing the improv. I really like the solid ones:) I couldn’t have thrown those HST’s either, I have several boxes of various size and colors that I always think I will use( I did use some). I have been machine knitting more sweaters this week, and pineapple blocks.

I love your bright and cheery improv pieces.

Looks like you are having fun. I love the leftovers and the spider-webby thing. It will be fun to see what they turn into. At first, I thought, wow Amanda Jean does everything – teaching an exercise class too?!?!? But then I saw the picture an realized I didn’t have enough sleep and felt better.

I like your improv practice pieces. Like you, I think playing with fabric in that way is really fun. Those solids in the last shot are fantastic.
Have fun in your class. What a treat to take a class with Amanda Jean. 🙂
