Improv Fish
You might recall that I’ve been stitching up improv fish throughout this year. I had intended to join in on the Rainbow Scrap Challenge, but I haven’t kept up with linking up, so I’m just following along with the monthly colors. I decided to make improv fish in each month’s color, using Nicholas Ball’s method in his book, Inspiring Improv.
It all began in January, with green fish.
Next came February and red fish.
March called for purple fish – they were fun, but some got a bit dark. I don’t have light purple in my stash, apparently!
April called for yellow, to add some bright colors to my otherwise dreary views outdoors while waiting for spring to arrive.
May called for pink fish, and they are all done early in the month! Woohoo!
For some reason, I’ve been making 10 fish each month, with the exception of January, when I made 12, so I have 52 fish so far. It’s going to be a lively, colorful school of fish at the end of the year. Oddly, for all the blue scraps I’m using, my blue scrap bin doesn’t seem to be getting low? Does that happen to you too?
And that’s my improv fish update – everything is going swimmingly!

You are going to have a very colorful school of fish when the quilt is finished.

Looking good, Wendy!!

Cute school of colorful fish, Wendy!!! Yes, it seems like no matter how many years one does the RSC, the scraps are still there!!!

Things are definitely swimming along in your workroom. Your shoals of fish are delightful. It’s going to make a lovely, bright quilt

These improv fish are so much fun! I totally get not worrying about linking up with RSC. I only did it one time!

Wow, do I ever love seeing all the fish in your school! I certainly do have that same problem of sewing scraps every month and the bins never seem to go down, although I made a pretty good dent in the dark green strips this month thanks to using a bunch for binding as well as my RSC blocks.

Haha “swimmingly”. 😀 About how big is the biggest block? The improv fish are very cool. And pretty!
My blue scrap bin is literally bulging – I can’t quite close it. At some point when I catch up with a few things, I’ll have a marathon purge of scraps that I’ll never use, and someone at the Goodwill store will be happy to find a treasure of scraps. BUT I suspect the bins will not seem any smaller. Very strange. 😉

These are going to make such a fun quilt! Swimmingly–tsk tsk. As to the blue scraps not going down, I wonder if something fishy is going on there. What is it with those bottomless scrap bins anyway??

10 per month? Looks like you’re on a **deep dive** in this fishing challenge! 😉

my blue and green bins never run out of fabric and I never really considered those favorite colors – I have some blue clothing but little of green.

You have quite a school of fish. I love all the colors. How big are the blocks? This will quite an interesting quilt.
piecefulwendy
Thanks! The blocks vary in size, there are no set sizes. The smallest is maybe 2”x 4” and the largest 4” x 9”?

I think the dark purple fish are going to add a really nice dynamic to the overall quilt – they will look like they are swimming deeper or further away in the school of fish! It’s really fun to see them all together here.

I can’t wait to see how all of these fish get pieced together.

That is going to be a most awesome quilt!

Oh, those scrappy fish are too much! I love them in – in all the colors and all the shapes and sizes. I am not surprised that your blue doesn’t seem to get smaller. I got rid of a lot of mine when I did that strippy quilt, over a year ago, but there are pleny of scraps multiplying in my studio and office!

Wendy! I love your fish!!
I’m going to have to do something with your idea; it’s just too cute.
I have a Pinterest board called Happy Fish. Yours would for sure work there!

Your improv fish are so much fun, Wendy! I love them in every color. I do always seem to have more blue than any other color – it doesn’t seem like I buy more of it, but maybe I do!

Those are fun fish and great use of scraps!

Love this project Wendy. I am curious to see how you set the fish when you start to assemble the quilt top. It is going to be great!

There is definitely something fishy happening at your house!! Happy fishing:)

Swimmingly? Well, I beg to differ. I see that you are drowning in fish 🙂 In other words, you have fallen for fish – hook, line and sinker. I am going to stop before my puns start to rot 😀 OK, that was the last one. Big Squishy Hugs.
