January 2021 Monthly Color Challenge Block
Happy New Year, everyone! I am excited to share my January 2021 Monthly Color Challenge block with you today. This block of the month challenge, hosted by Patterns by Jen, promises to be another fun one this year! But first, let me introduce myself.
If this is your first time stopping by my blog, I want to welcome you and thank you. I’m delighted you are here. I’m Wendy, and I live in Minnesota. Ever since I was little, I have loved fabric and color. My grandmother was a seamstress for our local area when I was growing up, and when she, my mom and I would go to the fabric store, my favorite thing was to walk along the stacks of fabric bolts and run my fingers over them. Fast forward some 60 years, and I’m still playing with fabric and thread.
I love bold colors, whether it is bright and bold or deep and earthy, and that’s part of the reason I enjoy this challenge. This is my third year of participating in the Monthly Color Challenge, and I enjoy using all of my colorful scraps to construct the blocks.
Our host, Jen, from Patterns by Jen has done a fabulous job of designing the blocks for each month. This year, her inspiration for the blocks is food, and she has put together a colorful menu of blocks! Each month’s block color will be inspired by a colorful food. You might even find a recipe or two in the guest host blogs as we go through the year.
Along with all the other details of putting together this fun Monthly Color Challenge, Jen has also found some amazing sponsors for us. Here are the sponsors for the first quarter of this challenge:
Isn’t that a fantastic group of sponsors? Click on the icon and it will take you to the sponsor site, if you are unfamiliar with them. I want to express my thanks to each one of them for providing some great prizes to the quarterly winners – yes, there are prizes!
While you are digesting all of that information, let me show you my January block. Inspired by eggplant, the block color is a deep, rich purple.
I am very excited that Jen is offering two size choices for the blocks this year. I’ve chosen to make the smaller blocks this year. My block finishes at 6 inches.
As far as an eggplant recipe? I have to confess that I know very little about eggplant and rarely cook with it. We have grilled it, and that was good. The next time it is available here in Minnesota, I’ll be trying this recipe.
Join the 2021 Monthly Color Challenge
If you are interested in joining with me and the others as we sew along with Jen this year, go to Patterns by Jen right here for more information. The pace of the challenge is very relaxed and easy, with just one block each month. The blocks are simple, easy for you if you are a beginning quilter. Plus, Jen has videos if you need some assistance in constructing the blocks each month.
Blocks are released on the first of the month, and the instructions are free for that month. Once the month has passed, instructions are available at Patterns by Jen for a nominal fee.

Oooh, I really like your eggplant purple windmill block. Such gorgeous fabric.
If I gave read correctly, you must have whipped up the block the minute you got the instructions as today is the first of the month. What an industrious, lovely start to the year.

Love that beautiful block! I call it a pinwheel, and I’m up for purple. I’m thinking I might hang with the 6-inch block this year too.
Enjoyed reading about you. 🙂

Wow, you’re on it already! Pretty block! I still need to figure out what things I’ll be joining in for the year. (I feel like I can’t even go there till the boys are both back up at school) I’d love to do so many of them but I don’t want to take on more than I can handle. Might spend some time going over that today.

That is a pretty block, Wendy! I wasn’t going to sew along this year until you mentioned 6 inch blocks – so I might change my mind and join in after all. There are so many fun possibilities out there at the beginning of the year!

Beautiful eggplant block, Wendy!! I downloaded that recipe as I love eggplant and will definitely be giving it a try! I don’t fry much, but my sweet mama used to fry it and it was SO good! Of course, being a southern cook, she fried most everything! LOL I love it grilled also!!

Love the deep, deep purple in your block. Looking forward to seeing more brilliantly colored blocks this year.
