Lost Woods Batik Table Runner
Lost Woods Batik Table Runner is a UFO that I have been struggling with for months. The blocks in this runner were left over blocks from a quilt I made a few years ago. I had sewn them into a runner quite awhile ago, but could never decide on how to quilt it.
I named it Lost Woods because it reminds me of a walk in the woods, with all the woodsy batik fabrics in the quilt. The pinwheel pattern reminds me of looking up while in the woods, at the tops of the trees, and twirling. Did you ever do that when you were a kid (or an adult)?
Today I decided it needed to get checked off of my UFO list. I decided to do wavy line quilting, it goes quickly, and works pretty well with many quilt designs.
Aurifil #2620 was my thread of choice. It blends well, even with the creamy batik.
Once I had it quilted, I seriously considered turning it into a bag (but would it be deep enough?) or a pillow. This is where I left it when I went to have lunch.
The pillow would’ve won out if I had a pillow form on hand (I was too lazy to make one). Besides — another pillow? Really? In the end, I decided on the table runner.
I used a blue batik fabric from my stash for the binding. While I considered finishing the binding by machine, I enjoy binding quilts while I watch a show. That dark color and the tight weave of the batik made it just a little less enjoyable though!
It feels great to have another UFO off my stack!

Have a great weekend, friends! What are you working on?

Yay you. Doesn’t it feel great to say, another one done. And that’s why I rarely use batiks in quiltmaking, because they will wreck your fingers!

Thanks, Velda! My fingers survived!

Congrats on the UFO finish. These always feel like such a trimph. Was it a Three Guys pattern? I was doing a batik binding the other day and I switched my sewing needle to a Sharp – used to use for hand piecing and sometimes applique – made a huge difference!

Oh, I hadn’t thought of using a Sharp. Will try that. I’ll have to check the pattern. I don’t recall whose it was.

Hi Wendy,
What a great finish! I think the table runner is the perfect choice, although who can’t use a bag. I love doing hand binding, too – especially while watching TV. I find it very relaxing – and warm when it’s a quilt I’m working on, since I’m almost always cold. ~smile~ Roseanne

I have so many bags, but I was a bit tempted! I find it relaxing too!

I hear ya on the hand binding with batiks, it’s difficult so I don’t do it. But I remember thinking the same while doing a wall hanging that was hand appliqued and EPP with Batiks. Another UFO done, congrats on that.

Oh, I imagine that was not quite as enjoyable with batik fabric!
Karen
great finish and love those colors

The wavy lines are perfect and the batiks are beautiful. The effect is like looking up at tall trees; I still do it, it’s always a refreshing perspective. Your table runner is a wonderful finish Wendy!

Thank you, Angie! Glad you’re still looking up!

I meant Abbie! Sorry!

Love your wavy crossing lines! Great quilting solution.

Thanks, Nancy! I love wavy lines (they’re easy)!

Oo, pretty! I love batiks in the colors of nature like greens and browns. (Oh, heck, I love ’em in lurid brights, too.) I totally see the “spinning while looking up” essence of this one. And I think this is the first time I’ve noticed that your wavy lines cross each other like ribbons. I love that! Gotta try that next time I do wavies 🙂
piecefulwendy
Oh yes, try waves! So fun!

Wendy, this is beautiful! I totally see your swirling twirling trees. I have many childhood memories of running around in the woods. I also want to applaud you on this finish. Even though you were not exactly sure where it was going, you kept pushing through until you had a finish. Debating on where to go next can be such a hang up, and whether it was a pillow, bag, or table runner any would have been great. You chose and sewed on. I need to take a lesson from this.
