Luminous Layers Quilt Top
My Luminous Layers quilt top is sewn together. Luminous Layers is a free quilt along from Sandra at MMMQuilts. Over the past few weeks, Sandra has been taking us through this quilt, and this week, we’re assembling our quilt tops. The quilt parade is scheduled for June 15th.
I think I have a plan for the quilting, but this is the step that always slows me down. I overthink it, so I’m going to try to keep it simple. For the backing, I have had this fabric for awhile, just waiting for the right quilt. Since there are animals on the front, how about more animals on the back? I think it will work.
It’s such cute fabric, and the colors coordinate pretty well. It will almost make the quilt reversible, don’t you think?
While I’m thinking on the quilting, I unearthed some scraps, leftover from this project. I had planned on donating the scraps, but as I looked at them, I decided I should just cut them into strips and sew two more placemats.
The fabrics are from the Food Truck line from Paintbrush Studio Fabrics. I had just two (almost) full-size fat quarters to use for the backings. These are large placemats, about 20″ round. That size works well on our patio table.
For the quilting, I did a quick serpentine stitch right down the middle of each strip. For the batting, I used fusible fleece. I made continuous binding two different prints that had been printed side by side (it was a sample print, I think), so the binding looks pieced, but it really isn’t. I’m always amazed at how much continuous binding comes from one square, but I can’t remember what size I cut the square – maybe 14 inches? Anyway, I had enough from one square to bind both placemats. There’s also something very satisfying about machine quilting that bias binding, too – it’s quick and easy.
So in the next few weeks, I’m going to be quilting my Luminous Layers quilt top, working on a quilt requested by BigJ, continuing to clean my quilt room (my stacks are getting too messy), and thinking about my next challenge quilt.
What’s going on in your quilt room?

It looks great! I really like the backing fabric too.

Best of luck with quilting Sandra’s QAL and enjoy your new patio placemats, Wendy!

Luminous Layers is beautiful! Love your colors, and yes that backing will make it reversible. I had not thought about making round placemats! Those are pretty, and I like that bias binding. What did you use as a circle template, and do you have a fancy gadget to help make your bias binding?

It’s *very* cute. I love the colors.

Very fun finish. That backing is perfect, the right colors and it goes well with the other animal print.

Great projects Wendy! Your LL came together so nicely, love the fun bright colors you chose. Great use of the food fabrics too.

You’ve been busy! Luminous Layers is such a fun display of those cute fabrics. Stars are always a fave with me so yep, cute finish! The food truck fabrics are perfect for those placemats too (hmm, maybe I should sneak in and raid your stash?!?). Fun stuff today! You go!

Your quilt really sparkles with the yellow, turquoise and orange. And the backing you’ve chosen seems to be a match made in heaven. I look forward to seeing the quilting. I’m pondering the same subject…quilting. I like those placemats. A great way to use up the scraps. I hope you are successful in figuring out your next challenge. I’m sure it will be great.

This is turning out so fun, Wendy! I love your colors, and that backing is perfect. I’m just starting to look at backing fabrics – hoping it will come quickly if I order something! Those placemats are great! I have the same question as Linda – how do you cut that perfect circle?
Yvonne @Quilting Jetgirl
Oh, that looks like a fantastic backing fabric option! And I love the round placemats. I made a set a few years ago for a friend and have always thought they look nice on a round table. I look forward to seeing what the request from BigJ evolves into.

Glad you could use those ‘scraps’ for your outdoor table settings – thematic fabric is often hard to use in a scrappy manner, but of course a patio table is perfect!

I really love this Luminous Layers version. The back just adds to the party on the front. Perfect for some little one (or big one) to keep exploring and finding more animals! Looking forward to seeing your BigJ project! I am ready to sew together today, so here I go……

I love the Luminous Layers 🙂 So bright and happy
Mine is still in the “print and save” stash

Wendy, it just sings! I love the animal theme, and the colours that are bright; yet the turquoise calms the whole piece. That backing as someone said, is a match made in heaven! I had a bit of an idea for quilting mine, but after seeing Tracie’s, I’m thinking something similar might be the ticket. So happy you participated, and thank you for always giving me a ‘plug’. 🙂

PS – I need to make some round placemats for our round patio table! Gosh, that’s perfect. I already copied you with the table centre that you (and I) sliced up one side and sliced a circle in the centre to make it go around the umbrella pole, so why not copy you with these?!

See! I am determined that I must not buy a single piece of fabric until I used up a good portion of what I have. Then you go and show how cute some new fabric would be!

Love the fun animals, Wendy! And super cute placemats, too! Great idea–making them round!!!

I’m kinda late to this Linky party, but I needed to say…” it’s cute as can be!” And I too love the round place mats. I like how bias binding looks and works, but I don’t do it often! Don’t know why?

This is such a fun quilt. I love it 🙂
