May Monthly Color Challenge Block

Today I want to show you my May Monthly Color Challenge Block for the 2020 Monthly Color Challenge hosted by Patterns by Jen

This year, birds are the inspiration for Jen’s color choices for our blocks. The bird inspiring May’s block is the Budgerigar, known in America as the parakeet.

I'm quilting along with Patterns by Jen for her 2020 Monthly Color Challenge - piecefulthoughts.com

I actually had a parakeet for a time while I was growing up. Pat the parakeet came to us by way of our neighbors. I have no idea why they gave him to us, but I was delighted. I’m not sure my mother was as enthused.

We had a small home, and I recall that Pat’s cage was close to our phone, which had a nifty little notepad on the bulletin board next to it. Pat thought it great fun to reach through his cage and shred the paper, leaving paper confetti all over the floor. Like I said, I’m not sure my mother was enamored with Pat as I was. Pat, by the way, was blue and gray; not the green parakeet that Jen had inspiring her for the block.

I couldn’t resist pulling out my Key Lime Grunge for this block, pairing it with a small piece of green in my stash. One of the reasons I enjoy sewing along with Jen on these blocks is that they are so quick and easy to do. The swirly pinwheel reminds me a bit of the paper fluttering to the floor while Pat was at work on the notepad!

At the top of this post, you can see my blocks for January through April. If you like what you see and are interested in joining in, you still can. The pattern for the May block is free until the end of the month. The previous months are available for a small fee. You can find all the information about this block of the month at Patterns by Jen right here. There are also sponsors for this fun sew along, and you can see the full list of them for Quarter 2 here

I’ll be back on Friday with more quilt blocks that I’ve done this month for a personal Block of the Month and my 100 Day Project. See you then!

One just have to love the grunge and then in lime green too, LOVE! My aunt had a yellow parakeet, I was kinda scared of the thing as she let him out of the cage and flew around her house and then perched on her head or shoulder. He wasn’t out of the cage very long though, he came out to show off and then back in the cage.

The grunge is so fun in this block! I had a budgie as a kid, too. Unfortunately, he escaped and flew off into the wilds of New Jersey. I suspect he was eaten pretty quickly. NJ is a tough place!

That key lime grunge is perfect for this block, and I love the image evoked from the swirly pinwheels of paper fluttering to the ground. I can imagine your mom was less than thrilled with Pat the Parakeet! Have a great day! Mary

Love the story about Pat the parakeet! Looks like I’m not the only one who loves the lime green Grunge, too – that gives your block a fun look! Had I planned ahead a little better, it would have been fun to have a rainbow of Grunge available for these blocks.

What a gorgeous green! All your blocks are beautiful. Will you put them into a quilt together? We had a parakeet when I was growing up…for a short time. As a military family, we were on the move every couple of years. He was rehomed to me when some neighbors across the street moved. Then rehomed again when we moved. It was fun having him for a while. He was blue, and his name was PoPo. (I didn’t name him, and I doubt he cared what his name was.)

Love this block. The grunge is so pretty for the background. I am not a huge fan of birds as pets – not sure why? Did Pat make a lot of noise? Don’t you think this block would be a pretty quilt on its own?

Hi Wendy! I just love the key lime Grunge you used in this block. We were just looking for some key lime fabrics and had to order some. I wish I would have thought to use Grunge as it would have been perfect. Such a cute block! ~smile~ Roseanne
