Mellow Yellow
They call me mellow yellow – that’s right . . . some of you may recognize that line from an old Donovan song. While this yellow isn’t all that mellow, it is the fabric I chose for the September 2021 Monthly Color Challenge.
You might recall that Jen is using fruits and veggies as her inspiration for the 2021 Monthly Color Challenge. September’s fruit is the pineapple, a favorite fruit in our home. We prefer it sliced and eaten fresh; however, BigJ is a big fan of Pineapple Upside Down cake.
The printed fabric is from a fat quarter I picked up at JoAnn’s. I thought it would be fun to use it in this block, and I also thought I had it figured out so the design all went one way, but oops. Anyhoo . . .
We are quickly approaching the end of 2021, so let’s see if I can give you a peek at all of my blocks so far.
Quite a colorful bunch, so far, I think, don’t you? This year, I’ve chosen to make the 6-inch blocks; it has been a nice change from the larger size I’ve made in other years. This is my third year playing along with Jen’s Monthly Color Challenge.
I think my mellow yellow block is one of my favorites, but then I think that about each block I make each month!
Are you playing along? Have you made a mellow yellow block yet?

Thanks for that ear worm, Wendy!! LOL I love seeing how we can take the same pattern and the blocks look totally different.

Anything but mellow, Wendy, but SEW fun! It looks like you were inspired by your rotary cutter. I’m happy to report that I finally found mine yesterday! With that, my machine was humming.

What a pretty crew you have lined up! Of course Wilbur steels the show, haha.

You are aging us – at least those of us who know the song you are referring to! Looking at the group of blocks, I really like the earthy look to the tones you chose for each block. They look great together!

That yellow fabric definitely says pineapple to me. It’ll be fun to see how this quilt comes together!

It will be interesting to see how you make the two yellows ‘play nicely’ in your overall quilt top! I know you’ll easily rise to the challenge when the time comes.

I love how the directional fabric adds movement to your block, Wendy!!!

Fun to see all the blocks together, and I like your yellow just as it is. Isn’t it weird though how you can think you have the direction all figured out and then it goes a different way? I made a mask last year, and I was sure I had everything face up. I ended up with half upside-down, and I asked myself, How is that possible?

I believe I would hang that mellow yellow one on my wall exactly as it it.

Fun block! A slice of pineapple upside down cake would be good right about now. Want to send me some?

My Sewful Retirement
Hi Wendy, all of your blocks are beautiful! So far the purple and orange are my favorites! We too are big pineapple fans….and I’m partial to pineapple upside down cake also ♥ Enjoy your day!

That is the perfect fabric for a pineapple! My husband prefers his pineapple in an upside down cake too. 😉
I always enjoyed that song, and now I’ll have it running through my head (and believe me, it’s a welcome change from that annoying song in the Colace commercial that I can’t get out of my head!)

That yellow is scrumptious! I like the way it looks and the blocks are all looking great together.

You did pick the perfect fabric for pineapple – love it! Fun to see all your little blocks/fun photos together!
Quilting is in my Blood
Another great block. My favorite is probably the orange one, but this block is right up there!

Isn’t it funny how some songs just stick in your head for years? Great block, with a fun name. You are going to have a very colorful finish from those blocks. Do you know how you’ll be setting them together yet?

I love these blocks! That’s a great one for pineapple.

Love the bold and bright yellow. Mellow and you? Nah, I didn’t think so 🙂

The block really does make me think of a pineapple — so much so that my mouth is watering. (BTW I live in pineapple country so we get queen pines easily and also eat lots of them).
Your array of fruit and veg are really lovely and will make a cheerful, happy, fresh quilt.

Hi Wendy, yes that Donavon song comes right to mind for me and I like it. Beautiful block and I enjoyed seeing all those perfectly pieced blocks and also the peek of Wilbs. And fresh pineapple is a favourite here as well as the cake.
