Mini DrEAMi Project
A mini DrEAMi project, also known as a baby squirrel, happened in my quilt room yesterday. Those little baby squirrels sure are cute, aren’t they?
This little diversion came by way of a stop at a quilt shop on our way back from Door County. If you happen to be in the area of Altoona, Wisconsin, be sure to stop at Stitch Supply Co. What a beautiful shop and retreat center. I enjoyed walking through the store and looking at all the pretty fabrics — Alison Glass, Cotton & Steel, to name a few. Of course I had to bring some home, and how cool is this — if you spend $50 (not difficult, trust me), your fabric is tucked nicely in a project bag.
The bag is well made and good quality, and I love the color. I’ll be honest, this was one of the things I wanted out of my stop there. Anyway, don’t miss this shop, it’s definitely worth it.
Part of that fabric acquisition was the star of my little DrEAMi project. Let me show you my little cutie.
This little basket measures 2.5″H x 5″W x 4″D. The outer fabric is Printing Press in Mustard by Uppercase (Vol. 3), purchased at Stitch Supply Co. The lining fabric is from my stash, but I’m not sure of the designer (maybe Alison Glass?). This little basket is a free pattern from Patterns by Annie and you can find it right here.
I have been working on a bunch of QALs, secret sewing, and other projects that are ongoing, so I enjoy a quick little project in the midst of the longer ones. It’s like a little reward for me.
The little basket is very roomy. It could easily hold 9 Aurifil thread spools. Made with Annie’s Soft & Stable, it stands well on its own.
The best thing about this little project? It’s “leftover layer cake” friendly. All it takes to make this basket is two 10″ x 10″ squares of fabric and a 10″ x 11″ piece of Soft & Stable. It can be made start to finish in an hour or less.
Ok, time to get back to the large projects once again, until another squirrel drops by!

Oh this is tempting, if I wasn’t in the middle of a project I would be on this one now.

It’s such a cute little basket. Love the colours and that uppercase fabric is so perfect for it.

I love your basket and that project bag that your bought items were put into I love too – I do love getting the little extras like that when you buy things even though I know the shop gets them for almost pennies if they get them by the hundreds or whatever

Now there’s a fun excuse to use for buying $50 of fabric-oh but I wanted the project bag, LOL You are too funny girl! I love what I see of your purchases;) Super cute little basket-you can put the baby squirrel right in there, haha.

I would spend $50 to get the project bag too. I have saved and cherish all my little swag souvenirs. Hope those squirels leave you a few nuts.

Well, that is awfully cute. I’d probably have to drop everything and make it too…but I’m not going to.

OH…love the bag and the project! That is so much fun and a great way to display thread or makeup or anything. Love it.

Cute little basket. I’m sure you are tempted to make more. Do you think it would work without the soft and stable? Maybe using SF101 (cotton fusible) on the lining and fusible fleece on the outside? S&S is incredibly expensive in Canada.

It would be worth a try. The Soft & Stable provides the stiffness to stand up, so that’s what you’d be looking for.

Super cute basket Wendy. That project bag likely inspires a lot of customers to hit that $50 mark. Great find!!

I agree, Bernie, and $50 is pretty easy to reach!

I love your little basket, Wendy! Since I just happen to have a piece of Soft and Stable in my cupboard leftover from a bag I just finished, I think I see one of these in my future. Nothing like squirrels inspiring squirrels, lol!

Yay! Can’t wait to see it!

Hi Wendy! Aww, what a sweet little baby squirrel. We all know they grow up to be bigger ones but they deserve their time in the spotlight as well. Fun little basket filled to the brim with all things quilting – love it. And I’ll be sure to remember the name of that store. ~smile~ Roseanne

I love little baskets like this and using any of Annie’s patterns are so fun. The fabrics are really pretty! I have lots of squirrels in my life. :O)

Such a cute basket! Did you intentionally match the fabrics to the threads in the basket? The project from the shop is also awesome–great motivation to add one more thing to your purchases to meet the minimum!
piecefulwendy
I matched the threads to the basket, yes ☺️
