Modern Table Runner
This modern table runner is a great idea for a last-minute Christmas gift, if you are looking for one. The pattern is in Issue 26 of Make Modern magazine, and is designed by Jessie Pendergast, a quilter from my local quilt group.
This is my second DrEAMi post for November, projects that cause me to “drop everything and make it”. I’ve had a bit of fun with them this month. You can see my other DrEAMi project here. As soon as I had the fabric gathered for this runner, all bets were off on any other projects until I had this one done. And yes, this will be gifted.
I put a holiday twist on this design, using Lewis & Irene’s Hygge Christmas fabric for the large blocks in the runner. The smaller blocks use the Hygge Christmas fabric, a red print from my stash and madder pinks (who said reproduction fabrics can’t play with moderns?). The sashing is Kona silver, and the backing fabric is another scrap from my stash.
The runner finishes at 13-1/2″ x 40-1/2″. It goes together quickly, using strip piecing for the small blocks. Once the piecing was done, I pondered the quilting. Having quilty friends nearby or a text away is helpful, so I consulted my quilting pal, Vicki, who knows a thing or two about quilting runners.
She suggested I sew diagonal lines through the larger squares and scallops in the smaller squares. It took no time at all. I added straight line quilting through the sashing, and the quilting was finished. All of the quilting was done using my AcuFeed foot with Aurifil 50 wt thread in Dove (#2600), Burgundy (#1103) and Pink (#2423).
Here’s a closer peek at the Hygge Christmas fabric. It has trees, candles, coffee, and gnomes. What’s not to like for this holiday season, right?
I also used the Hygge Christmas fabric for the binding, for one more little punch of fun. The backing is a low volume gray. I cannot recall the designer, but some of you might recognize it.
Jessie’s pattern is called Square Trail and is in Issue 26 of Make Modern magazine. This modern table runner is so quick and simple. I’ll be using this pattern again.
Linking up with Sandra for the DrEAMi party at mmm!Quilts.

Wendy, I LOVE that! Wish I had seen it before I started in on a tablerunner I’m making as a gift for my quilt group Christmas party. You found such cute fabric for it, too. No wonder you had to drop everything else and make it!

Hi Wendy! What a great runner. I just love the simple design and especially the fabric you chose. This pattern would be so great in so many different themes. What a fun finish – I would have dropped everything to make it as well. I think it’s about time I subscribed to Make Modern. ~smile~ Roseanne

Very nice! I love the fabric in the big squares. It reminds me of old fashioned peppermint candy 🙂
piecefulwendy
I kept thinking of peppermint candy too while I worked on it!

Love it!!! Very pretty! And yes, as long as the colour is right, reproductions can play with modern fabrics … just ignore the quilt police that say anything different! 🙂
Happy Quilting! 🙂

Right! Thanks!
