My New Quilt Room

It’s time to show you my new quilt room, because I know many of you have been waiting to see it. I’m still in the process of moving in, and surfaces are still clear enough to take some photos. I don’t have much up on the walls yet, and not everything is in its final place. It’s a slow process, but I’m getting there. So if it looks a little bare in places, please bear with me. Anyway, come on in!

If you’d like to see what my space looked like before, this post will show you. That space was half of this current space, so I have a lot more room to play! .

When you step through the door, you are facing north, and this is the view. The full size of the room is 12.5′ x 20′ (250 sq. feet). It is in the lower part of our split level home – nice and cool during these hot summer days. It can get really chilly in the lower level during the winter, so BigJ did some work on the ducts and vents so it should be cozier this winter.

Straight ahead is my design wall that measures 7 ft. x 11 ft. My new cutting table in the center of the room measures 29-1/2″ D x 60″ L x 35″ H. One of my favorite things? I can walk all the way around my cutting table! I’ve never been able to do that in my other quilting spaces.

The little drawer just under the cutting surface is the unique feature of this table. When I drew up my rough sketch of the table for my brother, I told him I wanted that narrow drawer for my rulers. He said he had an antique printer’s drawer with some very cool original drawer pulls that might work, so he designed the table around that drawer. All my large rulers – my 6″x24″, my 12″ square, etc. are stored there. The open shelf below has a deep space for bolts of fabric, large pieces of batting, cats who like to hide for a nap, etc. On the left you see a basket that holds smaller specialty rulers and templates. The drawers below hold my batting scraps in the right drawer and my fusible fleece and interfacing, etc. in the left drawer. Note that the drawer pulls on the lower drawer match the upper narrow drawer. My brother had 5 of those printer’s drawers, so he removed drawer pulls from the others so my furniture all matches. Cool, huh?

Remember that piano project, where BigJ took the piano apart and was making it into a desk for my new quilt room? Here it is!

This will eventually be home to my computer and paperwork. I haven’t fully moved into this yet. There is lighting underneath the top, and some hidden cubby holes. Once I get settled in the desk, I can do another post to show you all the fun stuff. The piano keys are all dropped down and level and covered with resin.

Looking to the left of the piano, on the other side of the room, is my sewing table. I kept my furniture pretty simple and basic. I wanted some drawers – I initially told Steve that I just wanted some narrow drawers. He wisely made them a bit wider!

The sewing table measures 29.5″ D x 72″ L x 29.5″ H. The long length of the table makes such a difference when quilting a quilt. It’s so nice to have room to spread the quilt out while I stitch.

The three drawers to my right on my sewing table are already completely full. It’s nice having all those items in drawers rather than on my quilting table!

Looking from my sewing table, this is my view.

This wall unit holds my fabric and books on the upper shelves. The narrow center shelf holds 5 toy sewing machines gifted to me by my daughter. (I’ll have to take a better photo of them for a future post, because BigJ added something unique on that shelf, too.) Eventually that large center space will have a flat screen TV, but we haven’t purchased that yet. The five drawers underneath the counter hold fabric and some coffee supplies.

The cabinets below have space to hold bins, files and whatever else I need to store there. I’m still getting the cabinets organized; I suspect there will be several rearrangements before I think it’s how I like it. Here is a sample of what the cabinets can hold.

Looking back from the wall unit, this is my view. I especially like the ceiling beams and the lighting!

I hope you enjoyed the tour of my new quilt room! It is definitely my happy place, and I’m grateful to my husband and brother for all their work!

Such a fantastic new space Wendy! I’m so happy for you! And how fun is that desk! Repurposing at its best! The floor is gorgeous too! Is it new? My basement is 64 degrees, not so bad in the middle of summer but it’s definitely in need of heat by/before winter. Thanks for sharing and congrats! p.s. is your brother single. 😉😆☺️

  • Laura

What a wonderful space, Wendy! Not only because of the light, the new flooring, the design wall, etc…, but because you are so loved by your brother and Big J! You will have that with you every time you play in there! 🙂

  • Kate

Wow! You have a very cool brother, he does really neat stuff! Enjoy your new sewing space, looks like a great room to spend a lot of time in.

What a fantastic new quilt room, and I had fun looking at your older sewing room posts too! Enjoy your new space!
I share my sewing loft with our home’s storage area, so I’m surrounded by backpacking equipment, wrapping paper and such…yikes! But I’m still thrilled to have my own sewing space. (The only thing missing is a bathroom, lol, but I guess that helps me get my steps in!)

Wow, your new furniture and room look amazing! I’m sure you’re loving the space. I agree that walking around a cutting table is a wonderful luxury. And all those cupboards and drawers—wow! I didn’t think about how much Wilbur will enjoy all the special nooks. In fact, he probably thinks you designed it all for his pleasure. He has more room to perch and keep an eye on you!

    Hello!
I love your new quilting room! What a great idea to repurpose the beautiful piano!!! I would never what to leave the room, everything you need is right there.
I am still using our dining room for my quilting. The goal is to update one of our bedrooms (once the kids are on their own) for my quilting room.

  • Bernie

I especially love that the pieces you organize with look like pretty furniture. This is a beautiful set up. Kudos to your husband and brother for the gorgeous creative work!! That piano…. Wow!!!

  • Yvonne @Quilting Jetgirl

Oh, what a beautiful and functional space you have to create in, Wendy! I love the care that your husband and brother clearly put into the work for you. Your design wall is awesome and I love that it’s what you see as you enter the room. Have fun settling in. 🙂

What a beautiful quilt room. The detailed work by both your brother and hubby is just fantastic. I love your new desk. I had an upright piano like that when I was young (for playing). It certainly is one of the many places I can see Wilbs enjoying. A beautiful design wall ad so much storage space. I love the cutting space in the center. And the view out the patio doors will be just too much to be resisted. Congratulations on a new sewing space.

Wendy, that turned out so great. I love everything but especially the big walls with design space and built in cabinetry. Then the custom pieces – piano, cutting and sewing table are all perfect. I love that you can walk around the cutting table. I am sure Wilbs has many hiding places!

  • Diann@LittlePenguinQuilts

This is a fabulous room, Wendy! BigJ and your brother really did a great job on listening to what you wanted and making everything just right for you. Your cutting table and sewing table with their drawers are going to be so useful. Have fun arranging everything just how you want it!

  • Katherine Duquette

Your quilt room is wonderful, the furniture is perfect for your needs and you can walk outside so easily. Happiest of hours making and creating in your new space.
I have an old letterpress with type and type trays. Those drawer pulls are a treasure.

Your studio is very unique and beautiful! Your hubs and brother outdid themselves on your furniture. It’s just all so clever and bright!! Congrats – I bet you’re still pinching yourself!

  • nanacathy2

Your menfolk are super talented. The use of the printers drawers and the piano are simply genius. You are a very lucky lady to have such a fantastic room.

  • texasquiltgal

Wow, just wow! From your vision to the achievement is a lot of talent. That cutting table! I think you owe your brother a cherry pie, right? And your husband too. It is all spectacular, from the floor to the ceiling and all in between. Can’t wait to see all the bells and whistles on the piano desk. How did you get Wilbs to meow-del? I’m so happy for you!

  • Sandi

You are one very lucky lady to have these two special guys in your life help make your sewing room dream come true! It’s a really beautiful room with beautiful furniture.

Looking “a little bare” is so much better than cluttered tho right? I think all that we see (ads, etc) make us feel pushed to fill space but yes, it’s a process. Even if it takes years, I think it’s important to get your right mix of “cozy/inspiring & still spacious enough to create”. We have a seperate ac/furnace for our upstairs so I can control it pretty well but I still have a space heater and a fan. Having it cool down there in the summer is really nice! (With the sun coming in and my iron on, it can get pretty toasty in my dormer!). You already know how much I love the furniture and floor but those drawers are sooo nice! Smartly done! And to be able to walk all around the cutting table! So nice! (maybe someday???). I found a little metal sign at Hobby Lobby that says “My Happy Place”. Maybe you need one of those now? :oD. It’s a great room and I’m so happy for you! Well done to hubs and bro! (And to Wilbs for modeling. LOL). Looking forward to seeing how you grow with it all–the organization, decorating, and of course the projects!

Wendy your new space is fabulous. Big J and your brother did wonderful work. That cutting table is beautiful and love those pulls!!!

  • Mari

My, what a pretty space you have! I’m insanely jealous of that narrow drawer for your rulers. I hope you’ve gotten the chance to throw some fabric around and make it more “lived in.” LOL! (Just catching up on blogs, no need to reply!)

  • rl2b2017

OMG, Wendy!!!!!!! I’m so glad you shared the link with me. I think I’ve died and gone to quilting heaven and I’m only on the first picture. I can only imagine how you feel. The floor is gorgeous and that cutting table!!! You can walk all.the.way.around.it. Without bumping into a single thing! The painter’s drawer is beyond cool. Oh, to have a spot for those rulers. No more tripping over them or having them fall over on their own whenever they choose to. Your sewing table looks fab. Look at all the room you have on the left side of the machine! Aww, Wilbs is posed so nicely for you! Fabulous studio, Wendy. You deserve it and you really put some time into designing it just right. I’m thrilled for you!! {{Hugs}} ~smile~ Roseanne
