New Mexican Star Block
I woke this morning to realize that I had forgotten to write this post to share my New Mexican Star Block for the Pieces of the Santa Fe Trail sew along with Melva Loves Scraps. Have you read Melva’s post – you can find it at this link.
Early on during this sew along, I purchased Marian Russell’s book Land of Enchantment so I could read it in its entirety. I’m currently re-reading it with BigJ and enjoying sharing it with him.
As soon as I saw the block and read the excerpt, I knew I had to have green in the block – a nod to the passage, “. . . my green veil streaming out behind me”. Those angled strips in the design made me think of the veil streaming, and it just seemed fitting that this block should represent the moment she met her husband. I had just enough of that green fabric in my stash (I love it when that happens – and I don’t mess up the block!!)
Throughout the book, I find her relationship with Kit Carson a fascinating one, so this passage was rather poignant in that respect. He was so kind and protective of her and her family through the years. If you haven’t read the excerpt, I hope you take a moment to do so. While you are there, take a peek at the other blocks linked up too, there are some pretty ones!
I’ll add the New Mexican Star block to my stack – we’re almost done! I look forward to the next block, Melva!

Ooooh…I really like this one! It would make a pretty secondary pattern too.

Cute! I love your vignette, too, with the button bowl and cute scissors!!!

It is perfect! I love that you pulled the green in to represent her green veil. <3 Nice job!

Your block is so pretty, Wendy!

Reading her excerpts and seeing the blocks she and you made to represent each segment has been so enjoyable. You will have a special quilt to remember this quilt along.

Hi Wendy! I am really enjoying this journey, too. Melva is an excellent host and the blocks she selects are perfect. I’m thrilled that you had just enough of the green fabric – you know it was meant to be. And BigJ appreciating the story with you – how fab is that?!! That makes my heart happy. You did a great job making a lovely block. {{Hugs}} ~smile~ Roseanne

Love the block, Wendy! I am not sewing the blocks, but I am enjoying following along with Melva! 🙂

That’s a pretty block! I bet a whole quilt full of them would make a neat design, too. I’ve really enjoyed seeing your fabric choices for these New Mexico blocks each month, Wendy!

I like this block, nice choice of colors/prints. I could see it in red, white and blue too.

The second quilt I ever made (around 1990) was this block!

I love the Mexican star and your version is perfect. I have one on my bed, which is wearing thin. My husband likes it too much for me to switch out to another quilt, but I do think I will remake it sometime!

Excellent idea about the green! Love your version, very pretty. I’m enjoying Melva’s excerpts so much. I purchased the book and started it but haven’t picked it up for awhile. I do better when I read on the Kindle app – brighter and easier for my old eyes. 😉

This is such a gentle, tranquil block. Even without the background you have given, I would have fallen in love with it.
