Sew Not A Square
Sew Not a Square is this week’s theme for Project Quilting 14.4. I had so much fun with this challenge – even Wilbs joined in on the fun, making sure he was so not a square – haha!
I enjoy Project Quilting challenges because it allows me to play and try something new. Sew Not a Square – well, I immediately thought curves, but I wanted to do a different spin on my usual improv curves. I did a quick sketch of an idea, then got to work. It took me awhile to settle on fabrics, but I chose a yellow ombre, solid orange, and Grunge Ocean.
Here’s a quick description of what I did. I cut rectangles from the orange and yellow, layered them, and then cut improv curves. Sewing the curved yellow pieces to the rectangle orange pieces, I squared them up, then layered them with white, cut another improv curve, and sewed the white curved piece to the orange/yellow piece. Once I had six of them done, I squared them all up, and sewed three rectangles together by their short ends to make a strip, making two strips. Then I cut two 1-1/2″ strips from the Grunge Ocean, sewed those two strips together into a long strip, and sewed that strip down the center of the orange/yellow/white strips. Here’s the result.
I did some quick straight line quilting, spacing the stitching about a half inch apart, using 50 wt. Aurifil thread in yellow. For the backing, I happened to have a remnant of a pieced backing from another quilt. It was the perfect size, and now it’s in a quilt and not being moved from one place to another in my quilt room!
You will see this backing again soon – isn’t that pin fabric fun? For the binding, I made a long strip of continuous bias binding at 2-1/4″ wide. Those little notched areas were a bit tricky, but they worked well enough. I breathed a sigh of relief when it was done and it looked okay!
The finished runner measures 12″ x 46″ and fits perfectly on my bedroom dresser.
I enjoyed making my so not a square runner for the Sew Not a Square challenge. Thanks Trish and Kim for another fun challenge!

I read your tutorial before looking at the result and I almost gasped when I saw it – it’s spectacular! Your curves look great, and it looks perfect on your dresser. I’d keep flipping it over to see that pretty backing. I’m glad Wilbs got in the spirit of things too. 🙂
