Open Up Box Pouch
Making the Open Up Box Pouch was a Drop Everything and Make It Project (DrEAMi) for me this week. I’m sneaking in on the last day to join in with Sandra at MMMQuilts for her DrEAMi linky party. It’s been awhile since I’ve just had to stop and make something – it sure has been fun!
The Open Up Box Pouch is a pattern by Minki Kim. After hubs saw my little first aid kit for my car, he thought I should make him one. He has larger hands than mine, so I wanted to find a pouch that would be easier for him to use. The Open Up Box Pouch seemed like a good option, so I pulled out my blue/turquoise scraps and got to work.
Of course, I got so completely absorbed in the process of making, I forgot to take photos, but I have a few of the finish.
The two sides of the bag. The bag body is made using scraps stitched onto foam stabilier (like Soft & Stable) using the quilt as you go method. You quilt it however you desire. I used my AcuFeed Dual feed foot for some straight stitching.
This was such a fun pouch to sew together. The pattern is well written, and she also has a companion YouTube video that is very helpful to watch. There is no difficult bulkiness to the construction. Other than the quilting, I used my regular presser foot for the entire bag.
I was surprised at how easy it was to add the zipper; much easier than any other pouch I’ve made! When opened, the pouch lays nice and flat so the contents will be easy to see. .
When opened, the inner area is approximately 5″ x 8″. It is about 3 inches deep.
Now that I’ve made one, I’ll definitely make more, and one will definitely be in gray and red as request by hubs.
It’s been so long since I’ve had a DrEAMi project – I’ve missed them!
How about you – have you just had to drop everything else and make a project lately?
Happy stitching, all!
Wendy

What a great bag, I love the colour! I think this would be a perfect bag for a first aid kit.

That is a nice size, love the fabrics and especially your quilting! Was it your prototype before you make the gray/red one for Hubs? If so, maybe you could let it be Wilbs’ bag, since kitties adorn it.

SEW adorable with that Crumb quilted exterior, Wendy!!

I wondered what you were doing up there, you have been pretty quiet the past week or so. You found and made another cute pouch, pretty colors. I am curious why the double zipper tabs, are they needed?

that is a nice pouch – I can make these items but I don’t take the time to make them well which makes me not want to make them at all!! I guess I like the ones others make but not mine!!

It’s a gorgeous, bright pouch and won’t easily get lost in the car. I like the way it opens completely and am intrigued by the double headed zipper. Can’t work out how you managed that, or can one buy two-headed zippers in the US?!

What a great bag and description! I love your use of fabrics and quilting. I need a new makeup pouch and the wide opening would be great.

Adorable little pouch–great fabrics. Love how wide it opens!

Very cute. I love your fabrics.

I like how this one opens. One like it might be useful in the RV for supplies that rattle too much in a plastic container.
The colors and a cat print are cool.
Thanks for sharing.

That is a great dream project! I do love the way it opens up like that, and now to see if there are double zips in my pile….to add this to the ever growing list!

Ooh, that is neat, Wendy! I like how it opens up like that. And when you said how easy the zipper was, I really took notice. I’ll have to go take a look at the pattern now!

It looks fantastic and I appreciate your review on the bulk and zipper. Have fun making the one for your husband!

oh I’m glad you enjoyed making this pouch, as I did too. Wasn’t the video component nice to refer to?

Fun little bag…useful for all kinds of things! I like the way that it opens up! You really have become an excellent enabler, Wendy! 🙂

What a fabulous pouch Wendy! I love the slab you created to make it. I spy some Beothuk star fabric from Bernie’s shop ha! I love the way the zipper is inserted – going to have to check that pattern out. I am in need of some zippers for the bags I make – going to try zippers on a roll from a recommended online shop.

Love the look of this pouch/bag. I’ve watched the video and now I may just have to go buy the pattern. I love bags; the more the merrier and I like them to all be different 🙂

Hi Wendy! So this one isn’t for BigJ . . . hmm. I know it’s not for Wilbs . . . maybe Molly? Or just for yourself because it’s SO dang cute. Great job. And that zipper is cool and it looks like it’s hard to put in. I’ll have to check out the link you’ve shared. {{Hugs}} ~smile~ Roseanne

This is very cute (of course I love the colors). I am, however, still stuck in the Holland Pouch mode. I’ve loved doing them. Would you believe I’ve made 31 so far!!! (There are 36 great grands that will be at our summer gathering, so I’m not quite finished!

Perfect size for Big J!!! I love the colors and the random piecing. What a neat pattern, too!!!

This is so cute Wendy. Also, it is really fun to see projects of yours using fabrics from my shop – I think the plaid and the cat fabric came from the shop. You were such a loyal customer!!! 🙂
