Pastel Baskets
Pastel Baskets? If you’ve followed me long enough, you know that I like all the bright colors (and pointy things). Pastels are rarely on my fabric shelves these days, although if you dig deep enough you will find some in my stash, gathering dust.
My Pastel Baskets quilt goes back to the early days of my quilting. I wanted to make a pastel quilt to add to a quilt ladder my brother had made for me out of wood from my uncle’s barn. On that ladder were quilts from both of my grandmothers, so my goal was to add quilts made by my mother and me. The Pastel Basket quilt was mine. I chose the pastel colors because they seemed to coordinate well with my grandmothers’ quilts. Someday I’ll show you the quilt ladder, but I want to wait until the guest bedroom redo is done.
The pattern was from a magazine. It is the size of a baby quilt. I wanted it to be smaller because it drapes over the very tip top of the ladder.
This quilt was made back in the mid ’90s. While the baskets are made from 1930’s reproduction fabrics, the background fabric is just plain muslin, as is the backing of the quilt. It is hand quilted.
Can you see those little hand quilted stitches? They aren’t too bad, considering I was just getting the hang of hand quilting. Here’s a photo of the stitching on the back.
The batting is a fluffy poly, and while there’s quite a bit of hand quilting, not enough to settle the crumples. It is soft and cuddly though!
Here’s a photo with two bunnies that my mom made for our kids. I love the little hat and the bow tie! I’m thinking Spring and bunnies and, yes, missing my mom just a bit.
And one more photo, this time with the toy sewing machine my daughter gave me a year ago.
I have to thank Tracie of Riceford Streams for reminding me that I could write up a Throwback Thursday post today. She wrote up a cute post on her Scottie dog quilt. I hope you pop over and take a peek at her cute quilt!
Florida, Here I Come!
Tomorrow I’m on my way to Florida to visit my daughter, so I’m going to take a short break from posting. If you follow me on Instagram (@piecefulwendy), however, I’m sure you’ll see some photos of the fun we’re having. I’m looking forward to warm temps and sunshine!
Linking up today with Sandra at Musings of a Menopausal Melon for Throwback Thursday.

Yes those definitely aren’t your current colors Wendy! But I still like them and I bet it will be amazing in the redo room! Have loads of fun and soak up that sunshine-you could bring more of it back here too;) But I am not complaining, our weather this week has been wonderful too(for MN that is!).

Hi Wendy!
HAVE FUN visiting your daughter!! I love your pastel quilt, and your hand quilting looks beautiful to me. I can hardly wait to see that ladder with your mom and grandmother’s quilts on it. That is really, really cool. {{Hugs}} for missing you mom. I can relate and can miss mine any day to join in. ~smile~ Roseanne

Your style may have changed, but really those pastel basket quilts are at home anywhere I think. So pretty. I’m looking forward to seeing the whole display on the ladder. I love hand quilting on poly. It’s easy on the hands and delightfully fluffy.

This is such a classic, traditional quilt! I’ll bet it fits right in with the family parade of quilts on your ladder 🙂 I’ve never seen that particular basket block before…I really like it! It’s actually sort of modern and stylized and would look right at home in some zippy 2018 fabrics. Have a great trip to Florida. I hope you arrive here well ahead of the big storm so you don’t have any travel delays.

Thanks, Louise!

Fun little quilt!!! Great binding on it. It looks bright enough to me! Weren’t those feedsack fabrics the original cheerful, bright fabrics? And that sewing machine is the cutest!
Wow, tomorrow’s the day?!! Wonderful wishes for you!!!

HI I’m a fairly new follower and am enjoying your projects! I have to bring to your attention, tho, on your January post “Flimsy Friday” about the bear paw quilt—I love bear paws and yours is so pretty! However, I was studying it and, am I wrong or is there block turned the wrong way? First pic in the post second paw from the top right? I hesitate to bring it up but if it were me I’d want to know. HUGE apologies if I’m wrong! The fabrics and piecing are wonderful! (Comments are closed on that post so I’m over here)

Hi Chester! I’m glad you’re enjoying my projects! Thank you for pointing out the paw that’s turned wrong! I can still correct it because I haven’t done anything more on it yet! Can’t believe I missed that. Haha!
