Pieceful Monday
I spent this weekend working in my quilt room, doing a little more organizing, but sneaking in some sewing. It’s Pieceful Monday, so let me show you a few little snippets of what I’ve done this weekend.
No More Burned Fingers
While I was cleaning, I came across this fat quarter with little casserole dishes on it. I’ve always wanted to make bowl holders with it, and I finally got it done. I happened to have a coordinating fat quarter that worked perfectly.
I found that beginning with a 10-inch square fits every bowl in my cupboard, whether it’s my small cereal bowl or my large, deep chili bowl.
There are so many patterns for these on Pinterest, you can basically choose the one you prefer. I made two more . . .
I call this the “gator bowl” — get it? One will be sent to our daughter in Florida who lives in Gator (as in University of Florida) territory. The other will stay here, so I can think of her while I use it.
No more burned fingers on those hot bowls from the microwave!
Squirreling These Away
Well, not away, but up on my wall. It is the fall season in Minnesota, and time for me to get the rest of my fall decor up. The pineapples on my wall need to be changed out. I thought about pumpkins or fall leaves, but then I found a cute pattern for an acorn block. It finishes at 6 inches — perfect!
I had plenty of scraps in my bin to make these. I just stitched in the ditch to keep it simple. The pattern is a free download from Craftsy (no affiliate) and it’s called Scrappy 6″ Acorn Block in case you want to make a few of your own.
Here they are on my wall. I like them, don’t you?
Did you know
- Minnesota is having a bumper crop of acorns this year. If that’s the case, why are the squirrels still so nuts about my bird feeder?
- My mother’s maiden name is the Swedish word for “oak leaf” (although we spell it a bit differently)
- Acorns are really painful to walk over barefoot. Yes, I’m speaking from experience. Ha!
What’s Coming Up
- I’ve finished the top for The Fat Quarter Shop QAL. Next is getting the quilting done. The reveal is in October.
- Baby Quilt – this one is in the works. I was going to use batiks, but the bright blues are bleeding, bleeding, bleeding. Sigh.
- I’m working on a design for the Art with Fabric Blog Hop coming in November. I’m pretty excited about this one!
Those a just a few of my projects; others are in the works too. Isn’t that always the case with quilters??
What about you? What have you been working on this weekend?
Linking up today with Beth at Cooking Up Quilts.

Hi Wendy! I love your new little acorns. They look so cute next to your Count Your Blessings sign. Just perfect for a tingle of Fall, which we are not having this week. Near to 90 today – that is not fallish! ~smile~ Roseanne

Hi Wendy! Great bowl holders, and such appropriate fabrics! LOVE your acorns! And yes, I know from experience how it feels to walk across oak acorns barefoot–I can feel it in my memories now! What was your mom’s family’s name? I was working on my jelly roll quilt over the weekend–top finished!

And I thought last year that I was the only one left to make those bowls! I love the acorns adorning your wall. You better get some snowmen made now too, hehe-well you need something for every month/season right?

You’ve got some cute stuff on your blog today. I love that gator bowl. Your daughter will love it too.

These bowl holders are great teacher gifts. I got some for Christmas one year and the teachers all wanted some.

So cute Wendy. I have a set of bowls that are supposedly microwave safe but they really get hot when I put them in the microwave. Love the acorn blocks! Yay for fall!

I love the little acorns! And I love that you now have a special place on each side of your sign for little seasonal 6″ blocks. I need to make another microwave bowl cozy. Mine is a little small and misshapen from many trips through the wash. We tend to spill the hot food on it!

Sounds like a busy weekend for you. We went to my grandson’s 6th birthday party on Sat but I did manage to make a sterile g wheel cover (I live in AZ) for a gift. Also cut out a few luggage tags and cut out to zippered pouches, more Christmas gifts. Been trying to get things ready for my quikt retreat which starts next Sat for 11 days. Getting a lot of projects ready to see.

Gosh, why are your burning your fingers? I mean the fabric cozies are cute and all but the bowls are empty. You need not heat them if there is no food in there. Wendy, it is is good thing you know how to sew. I believe it is time you learned to cook :-p Don’t worry, I will send you some simple recipes.
And those acorn blocks are so yummy that they are going to attract so many squirrels into your neat little studio…oh no!!!

Acorns seems a fresh fall motif; And they look good. The bowl holders seems a good idea too.

The bowl holders are a great idea. I’d never seen one before. I’m going to make a few – you sent a squirrel my way 🙂

Great idea to use 10″ squares! I was just using mine last night and thinking I should make some more… I used 5″ squares, but your way would be quicker and showcase bigger print fabric nicely! xx

Acorns are like veggies, the contents of your bird feeder like dessert. That’s why the squirrels are never going to leave your bird feeder alone/! lol. I so love your little blocks that can be changed with the season…. looking forward to thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year…… 🙂
