Pieceful Monday

Pieceful Monday is all about catching up on quilt blocks. Let me show you the few blocks that I managed to get done, along with one quilt. I had help.

He Who Has Yet To Be Named a/k/a Wilbur has quickly settled into the category of Quilt Assistant. However, he does get easily distracted by the squirrel squad outside our window.

Not My UFO!

During the sewing room organization, I unearthed a UFO of my daughter’s. (Thank goodness it wasn’t mine, I have plenty!) This cute little quilt top just needed to be finished. We think she was around 10 or 12 when she completed this top. She remembers fussy cutting the squares so that there was a sheep in each of the squares.

Since this will be given as a doll quilt, I kept the quilting simple, just adding lines along the seam lines of each block. I used a bright pink Aurifil thread.

Here’s a peek at those cute sheep on bikes.

I backed it with this bright lime print and a coordinating yellow for the binding, both from my stash.

Sailing Away on the Sparkly Sea

Once that was done, I got to work on these cute ship blocks. Emily of My Darling Dogwood is part of the Bee Inspired group and their charity block for January is this cute ship. Emily mentioned in her post that she would accept blocks from quilters who aren’t members of Bee Inspired, so I contacted her and asked if I could send her a few.

Ship blocks always remind me of my mom. She enjoyed making them for baby quilts. I think part of the reason she liked them was because my dad served in the Navy, and he always had a love of the sea.

You can’t see it in the photos, but the dark blue fabric actually has a sparkle to it. I thought it was fun to use for the water and it used up most of it, reducing my stash, which made me sparkle just a bit. This block is simple and a fun way to use scraps.

These cute blocks are on their way to Emily today. I’m so glad I could make some for her.

Moda Blockheads 2

Finally, I tackled the Moda Blockheads 2 block that caused me to fall behind. While I like the fabrics, they are really challenge to photograph. The block is much brighter than in this photo.

This block measures 18-1/2 inches and has 64 HSTs. The 8 at a time method of HSTs is a time saver for this block. I like this block now that it’s done. I think it would be a great design for a pillow.

What did you work on this weekend?

These ships are so fantastic, Wendy! Thanks for adding them to the charity quilt! The sheep on bicycles from your daughter’s UFO are super cute, and I love the bright colors in that doll quilt.

You accomplished a lot. Way to go! The ship blocks are a neat tribute to your parents and so cute. And you deserve a Moda Blockheads trophy 🏆

I can see why your DD picked out those cute sheep at 10-12 yrs old. Perfect quilting to make a soft cuddly doll quilt. Congrats on getting through that block, Yee Haw! Smooth sailing ahead for those boat blocks;)

I love that bright little doll quilt and it’s kind of you to finish it for her and move it out of the sewing room. I am very impressed that you got through the blockheads block as it looks super difficult to me. The ships are also very cute. You are making great progress on the blocks.

Wow on the Moda blockheads block! It packs a punch. Love seeing maybe-Wilbur plonking his derrière on your quilt top!! So nice to finish that hilarious (who thinks this stuff up?!) sheeps on bikes doll quilt.

Oh, I love every photo in this post! The darling sheep, perfect for a dolly quilt. The majestic ships, that complicated and fascinating blockheads block. And of course, your new Supervisor of Squirrels 🙂

  • Nita

The ship block brought back many memories of your Mom. She made ship quilts for her grandsons when they moved in to their “big boy” beds. Miss her! Wouldn’t she be proud of us now?!!

That doll quilt is adorable. How fun to finish that up. I didn’t know your daughter also quilted – or was this a passing fancy? I tried to get Julia interested but nope, she is not into sewing at all. That Moda pattern is too intense for me – you certainly did an excellent job with it tho!!

Such a sweet doll quilt! I agree about the difficulty of some of the “reproduction colors” and photographing. Sparkily blue and stash reduction feelings – just perfect. I have one too many little blocks to do but this project is calling my name….

Hi Wendy! Oh those ship blocks are so darn fun. We used to make a variation of our usual nine-patch with sail boats interspersed throughout. We made a few with a red, white, and blue theme. I’m with your mom on these blocks! And Wilbur! He looks so darn cute, keeping an eye on those squirrels. As GB, you know that is required for all squirrels so it is nice that he can assist you with that as well. ~smile~ Roseanne

Your Moda Blockheads block is just amazing – way to go! Love the pic of your cat sitting on the quilt block, too – he’s definitely getting the hang of being a quilter’s cat. I feel like I didn’t get much accomplished this weekend – some quilting on my Squared Away top and that’s about it! But every little bit counts, right?! 🙂
