Pieceful Thursday
It’s a pieceful Thursday here today. I’m joining in with my other blogging friends over at Not Afraid of Color to share a few fun Thursday thoughts. In my last I Like Thursday post, I wrote about some ice cream memories. Today, LeeAnna is asking about our memories of the neighborhood ice cream trucks – did we have one, and what was our favorite flavor? Did we buy ice cream on a stick? A popsicle? Inquiring minds want to know!
I grew up in a very small town in South Dakota. We didn’t have ice cream trucks or anything like that. We did have a cafe, and I remember meeting friends and going to the cafe for an ice cream cone. It cost a nickel, or maybe a dime. Limited flavors – vanilla, chocolate, or a twist.
We also had a small grocery store, so we could go get frozen treats there, too. My favorite were the drumsticks, the waffle cone with vanilla ice cream covered in chocolate and nuts. If I wanted a change of pace, I was particularly fond of banana popsicles. Whatever we chose, we’d leave the shop and sit out on the curb and slurp away, eating quickly on those hot summer days so it didn’t all melt. If our hands got sticky, we either just rubbed them on our shorts, or found a local water hose!
While our kids were growing up, they didn’t get to do the ice cream truck thing either. We lived just far enough out of town that they weren’t able to walk downtown to get ice cream on their own, unless they were at a friend’s house. Most of the time, we’d do quick runs to Dairy Queen, or we’d have ice cream from the grocery store and jazz it up ourselves. We have a new favorite ice cream place in town now, and we stop there together from time to time. Even Tundra gets to come along and have a pup cup, which is eaten in about 2 seconds flat – there is not a chance of that melting!
On the quilting front, I’ve been doing some scrap bin organizing. My blue scrap bin was bulging, and it needed some straightening. Of course, that always leads to a fun little project. If you’ve been reading my posts lately, you know I’ve been having fun making fabric bins using a pattern from Sotak Handmade. Well, I’ve made enough of them that I tried a new size not included in the pattern. I had a small scrap of some Minnesota Quilt fabric, and I really wanted to make a little bin. It is about 3 inches square. It was a little tricky to manipulate while I was sewing, but I think it turned out well. It’s perfect for those handy clips many of us use!
Here’s a photo next to the smallest bin listed in the pattern. I made that bin earlier this week, but haven’t posted a photo.
I didn’t bother with handles for these two, because I don’t really need them. Am I done making bins now? Who knows? They are so much fun!
The Weekly Wilbs
Speaking of Tundra, I thought you’d enjoy seeing this photo of him trying his best to get Wilbs to play.
He just so badly wanted Wilbs to join in! Can you see that look on Wilbs’ face – hahaha! He was actually tolerating Tundra pretty well. They followed each other around, sniffing at each other and generally getting along, until Tundra got a little too exuberant and Wilbs swiped him across the nose. Tundra was so confused, and not really sure he should go near Wilbs, but he really, really wanted to. Who knows? The two might become good buddies yet. I think there’s hope!
Thanks for stopping by on this pieceful Thursday to read my Ice cream memories for this week! Do you have another ice cream memory to share with me? I’d love to hear it!

That weeny bin is very cute. Thanks for the pic of Tundra and Wilbur — it made me smile

Wilbs and Tundra had me chuckling, I can imagine Wilbs telling Tundra to go away.

Holy cow a 3 inch square bin! I’m impressed, and the fabric is really pretty. Ah that is such a cute photo of Tundra with Wilbs. Dogs just have to get exuberant and then they have a hard lesson to learn – lol!
I really enjoyed your memories of ice cream – took me back, especially wiping sticky hands on the shirt or washing in the faucet. There were always faucets with hoses around, right?

no ice cream trucks where I grew up in the country and I never saw one when my kids were growing up either in the small towns we lived in then. They always sounded like fun though.

No ice cream truck in our neighborhood either. I do remember we had popsicle day at school- once each week in warmer weather. We could
Buy a popsicle for a dime- my favorite was the creamsicle. Can you imagine how many sticky hands came back to class on those days? I went to a Catholic school so we wore pleated wool skirts. Surely they were used to wipe hands think don’t remember it for sure. 😉

You need to submit that Tundra photo to some sort of competition, Wendy. TOO adorable!!!

Your little fabric bins are cute — great idea to have a few by your sewing machine. Maybe I need to do something to corral my stray things.
The photo of Tundra and Wilbs is adorable! It makes me happy that they might end up as buddies yet.

No ice cream trucks for us either as we were way out on the farm. Seems to me there was a Schwan’s truck when we moved to town, but I doubt we got anything from there as it was a bit pricey. But I loved getting fudge sickles from the grocery store for a treat. Love Tundra’s pose!!

Love your little bin! I had a sinful chocolate milkshake when I was running errands yesterday. We did have ice cream trucks in my neighborhood…well loved! Love that picture of Tundra and Wilbur. Is is obvious Wilbur is in charge. Percy loved cats, they didn’t like him so much. Late with my tips and tutorials…gotta remedy that.

Bullet pops from the ice cream trucks in my neighborhood were my choice. We called out popsicle man is coming and ran to look for a nickel or two. Summers as kids were the best.
Tundra and Wilbs will be friends and someday I have to make a little fabric bin.
Washable ones would be better for me.
Happy sewing and thanks for the summertime memories.

There is definitely hope for Tundra and Wilbs to soften and become good friends. A lot of it probably hinges around Tundra aging and mellowing out a bit!! 🙂 The bins look so handy and congratulations on making such perfect use of the small fabric scrap for the last small bin.

Loved lemon Popsicles that the nuns sold on Fridays at school. The ice cream truck came every evening in the summer but it was past our bed time so we didn’t get any. Sometimes Mom drove through the ice cream parlor and got ice cream cones. As they handed them to her, she took a lick of each to keep the from dripping! Oh, and the dogs got their own or none of us would have had a cone to eat!. You have been busy with those little bins. So cute. I was looking for an update on Wilbs so it was a treat to see Tundra, too. Thank you.

Such a wonderful playful pose from your sweet pup!

they might be good friends since a lab is very forgiving, and the need to play overwhelms all else. Love your ice cream stories, and that little bin is adorable

I guess growing up in a big city has its perks since I grew up with Mr Softee trucks, ice cream cart peddlers, drug stores etc. When school was in session, we were allowed to buy ice cream from a peddler during recess, a half of cherry popsicle for a Nickle. But my favorite is still a Popsicle brand Orange popsicle. I do love the photo of Wilbs and Tundra, I feel for her. Let the bin binge continue.

Mike LOVES banana popsicles! He would still eat them today if we could still find the sugar free variety, but our grocery store doesn’t seem to have them anymore. Your fabric bins are cute! I bet they are fun to make. The photo of Wilbs and Tundra is a keeper – they look like they could be related, lol!

Cats are so good at being BOSS! LOL
I love your tiny scrap bin.

Wendy – I am joining you from I Like Thursday! It sounds like our childhood ice cream memories are similar! On our recent visit to the UK, my father in law said he would really like to get a McFlurry the next time he is in the US. Ah, the power of advertising!!! I loved the picture of Tundra enticing Wilbs to play – what a classic cat reaction!!!

Cats really are in charge, aren’t they? We had the ice cream truck and you could hear it coming from afar! Just enough time to get out your nickel (or dime?). I loved the orange cream sickles. When we went “up north” in Michigan there was an ice cream shop that had Superman ice cream- a real mess of blue, red, and yellow. My sister loved it and always ended up with a blue face and hands! Thanks for the memories- my sister passed away 2 years ago and it’s nice to have those memories.

Grew up in the country so no ice cream truck for me. Later, the city had mostly moved out here when hubs and I bought the fam. farm/house, but not quite! So my poor kids had to hear the ice cream truck that never came to our house all summer long, every summer. (And it still doesn’t come by our house to this day!) I often thought about driving over there and begging them to come to our house just once!
That is one adorable little bin!! And a great pic of Wilbs & Tundra. Glad to know they’re starting to get along for the most part. Nothing wrong with Wilbs keeping Tundra in his place right?
