PQ Mystery Quilt Finish

I have my PQ Mystery quilt finish to show you today. This is my first time participating in the Project Quilting Mystery QAL hosted by Kim (Persimon Dreams). While I didn’t get the quilt done in time to link it up, I enjoyed the challenge.

Mystery quilts always throw me off a bit, because I never know how to choose fabrics. With this one, I just decided to grab a couple of fabrics and see what happened. I liked the combination of the two fabrics; it was a challenge in itself to find a fabric that could stand alongside the bold print.

The print fabric is a Frond Fabrics print I’ve had on my shelf for quite awhile. The solid is Kona School Bus. In the making of this quilt, I used up all of that print (1 yard), with the exception of just a few small strips. (That print also made an appearance in my hummingbird quilt, as part of its red throat. )

Kim cleverly designed the blocks using the Roman numeral for 15, which is XV. Those of us participating did not know that while we were stitching up the blocks. Here is my finished quilt.

Since the theme was 15, I decided it would be fun to use XV as my quilting design. I just randomly added XVs to the quilt, turning it this way and that and stitching until I felt that I had added enough quilting. Here is the back of the quilt.

I pieced the backing using the same fabrics. Part of my purpose in doing this was to show more of the print for those who are interested in seeing what the print actually looked like. It was a bold floral print. I also used both fabrics for a scrappy binding. The finished size of the quilt is 24 inches square. When it came to the quilting, here were my choices for thread.

The three threads shown are Aurifil 50 wt thread in Yellow Gold (#2135), Burgundy (#1103) and Pink Taffy #4660 – variegated). The pink didn’t make the cut in the actual quilting. Here are a few close-up photos of the quilting. It’s difficult to see the XV quilting, but it’s there!

To finish it up, I made up one extra improv block from the scraps and created a label.

I enjoyed participating in the quilt along, and I’m happy to have this PQ Mystery Quilt finish to show you today. Meanwhile, I’ve been participating in the Project Quilting Season 15 challenges, and you can see my entries for the first two challenges here and here.

You made really good use of that bold floral. I find those very hard to use effectively, you definitely made really good use of it with the sold. Does this finish have a home?

Wow! I love the yellow and the print together and the improv piecing really made them both work together. I love the back of the quilt and the quilting really compliments the piecing. Love that label on the back. Congrats on another wonderful quilt.

Hi Wendy! I agree with Mary – this is absolutely your ascetic. It’s a fun finish and definitely fits the theme. The wall hanging size means you can enjoy it in your studio, I hope. It’s a bright pop of color that we need during these January dreary days. We are in the 5th day of dense fog coupled with rain/drizzle/sleet/yuck. Spring! We need a little Spring right now. {{Hugs}} ~smile~ Roseanne

Love the roman numbers, have to re-learn them. Fantastic work. And, yes… January could be not nice. Good we have a super hobby! (Wendy, we have an email problem … I only have the chance to let you know this here. May be my privat emails are in your spam? I have absolutly no idea! )

I really love this. The fabrics were an unusual choice but work really well. I love the Xs and Vs as a quilting motif! You did fabulously on this one, and funny that it was an improv type block, so well suited to you!

What a really fun mini quilt, and great way to use a print that had been hanging out in your stash. I love the connection back to 15 with the piecing and the quilting, and the pieced binding is a great finishing touch.
