Project Quilting Challenge 14.3
I have my Project Quilting Challenge 14.3 to show you today. This week’s challenge is to use the 54-40 or Fight quilt block as inspiration for the challenge. You can read about the challenge details here. There is still plenty of time to join in if you are interested. You have until Sunday to get your challenge quilt completely done (pieced, quilted and bound).
I’ve been itching to play with some improv lately, so I decided to play a bit with this challenge. Grabbing leftover fabric scraps from other projects I’ve been working on, I got to work. I made three 9-1/2 inch blocks, then stitched them together for a small runner.
I opted to use a solid center rather than a 4-patch unit, but I think it works and still carries the style of the quilt block. I had so much fun making the blocks, I could be tempted to do an entire quilt. The most difficult part of this quilt was the photography. No matter how I tried, I was not able to capture the intensity of the colors of the fabrics. It is much more bright than the photo shows. After trying several indoor photos, I finally took it outdoors (-4 feels like -23), quickly snapped some photos, and decided those photos will have to do.
The backing is from a quilt I finished years ago, and I thought it was the perfect complement to the quilt top. The little quilt measures 9 inches by 27 inches finished. You can see a bit of my wonky quilting in this photo. I quilted wavy lines through the blocks, following the blue squares, then a wavy line down the center of the length of the runner, and then wavy lines through the center of each block. It creates a bit of a starburst effect. I finished it off using the red-orange fabric used for the star points.
I wasn’t expecting this for the Project Quilting Challenge 14.3, but I sure enjoyed it. Thanks Kim and Trish!

this block really changes with color changes, I like your maverick star angle. I made the block yesterday using the tool for that pointy bit, and well, meh. improv improves it !

This turned out great! Fun to use ‘scraps’ from other projects. I’ve been enjoying seeing folks do their Project Quilting challenges.

Well, that is so much fun! I love the scrappy star points and wonky 4 patches in your design. Great job on the improv and another PQ project done!

Such a nice little table runner. I love the bright colors. And yes, I wouldn’t have stood outside any longer than you. It is downright cold here – 0 degrees today, 1 degree yesterday!!
Barbara
Cute! I wondered if you would do something improv with it.

It’s so fun to see how much you enjoy improv. I keep telling Brian that you are a true artist. You always inspire me!

Bright, fun, and quick! I think that leaving out the center four patch is not a big deal at all. I wasn’t sure I was going to play along with the challenge this time, but then an idea took hold that I couldn’t shake (and I really altered the block, LOL). I’m stumped on how to quilt my mini, but hopefully I can get an idea and start quilting this afternoon.

What a fun little runner, and I like the wonky points. Funny you say that about an entire quilt…. 😉 And, did you notice it’s one of the stars on one house, the orange one, in my pattern Rainbow Neighbourhood?
Kim Lapacek
this is adorable! I love the wonky stars!!! fun! Fun!

Your improv version of this block is a lot of fun, Wendy! I love the colors you put together and the whimsy of the wonky stars and squares, too. Your runner is just really fun and cheerful!

Well done! I’m still piecing my project.

Fantastic as always Wendy! Yes please – go quickly back into the warm of the house – photos are very good. Thank you for introducing the page of Kim Lapacek. It motivates me to try as well.
Fabric for SAHRR is still wet – so no chance to sew this project, why not Kim’s. And I googled the history behind the blocks name and gosh I learned again so much about american history and why the border is like it is. But most important is how you interpreted the block and I love it!

Very pretty runner Wendy. ‘Love those fabrics too. Thinking of making my project into a runner.

I do like the stars points done this way, so much movement. I also like your quilting, subtle, yet perfect.

Cheery little project, Wendy! Are the yellow and dot prints the same as in the friendship star blocks on your round robin! Super cute! 🙂
