Rotation Quilt Top
I worked on my Rotation quil top this week, and it is finshed. I’m very excited to show it to you. This quilt pattern was designed by Jennifer at Dizzy Quilter. When I ordered the pattern from Jennifer, there was a glitch in the mail delivery, and I ended up with two patterns (Jennifer was so great to work with!). When Mary (Quilting is in My Blood) let me know she was going to be retiring, I asked her if she’d like to sew a Rotation quilt along with me. She said yes, I sent her the pattern, and you can see her finished project here. I like Mary’s clever use of the Halloween fabrics, don’t you?
You might recall this fabric pull I showed in an earlier post.
If I remember correctly, the brown fabric is Kona Chocolate. The rest of the fabrics are random fat quarters from my stash. I did switch out that deep purple on the right for a different fabric, since the value of the purple was too close to the brown. Once I got the fabrics cut, the flying geese went together quickly and it was time to trim.
Once the trimming was done, the blocks went together quickly. I had them all sewn in an afternoon. I put the blocks up on my design wall, moved them around until I felt good about the placement, and voila! My Rotation quilt top is done!
The quilt top measures 60″ x 75″ and is fat quarter friendly. The design is so versatile, I keep thinking of different colorways. The centers could be fussy cut, with coordinating fabrics for the “blades”. How about using all plaids with a chambray or essex linen background? Flannels? So many possibilities!
I’m going to leave this Rotation quilt top up on my design wall for a little while longer. I like the view from my sewing machine.
I’ve decided to name this quilt “Fireside” since it reminds me of fall nights, bonfires, and watching the glow of the embers in the fire. If you’d like to make a Rotation quilt, you can find the ordering info at Jennifer’s link above.
What about you – what are you stitching up today?

I don’t think I would ever have thought of using the chocolate for the background colour, but I sure love it in your quilt.

Ah, so that’s what the flying geese blocks were for… It’s a beautiful, vibrant quilt top and I understand why you are leaving it pinned up so that you can enjoy looking at it. You must be very pleased with yourself

Wendy, the quilt looks so great in your wall — enjoy! And snuggling under it will be just as good.

Gosh I love this so much, couldn’t wait to see it when I saw the title of your post in my feed! Love the colors you chose and the name too, it’s perfect. I really am looking forward to making this one, and thanks for the tips and encouragement. Glad I got the pattern instead of trying to do my own version with HSTs! I am considering using this pattern for my grandson’s quilt. He’s a grad of Texas A&M, so I could use gray as the background for the “maroon and white” team colors. I could even fussy cut some of the logos and icons for the centers. Now I’m off to see Mary’s version!

I don’t make many patterns with a dark background, but I absolutely LOVE your new quilt top, Wendy!!

I don’t think I ever saw photos of your completed sewing room I love the big beams on the ceiling and what shows up in the photos looks really nice

Fireside is a great name for your Rotation quilt. The colors are really joyful together (and I am so enjoying seeing brown used beautifully in quilts right now). Is this a quilt you would quilt yourself or send out?

Thank you, Laura!

Fireside is definitely the perfect name for these pretty fall colors! Fun design, too. Mary’s is so adorable in the Halloween prints – and it’s so interesting how each quilt has such a different look, even though they are from the same pattern! Beautiful, Wendy!

Wendy – this is so pretty. I always love autumnal colors and themes – makes for such a cozy vibe. Does this quilt use partial seams? Trying to figure out how you put it together. The design is really cool.

Great job, Wendy! Fireside is really a beautiful finish. It’s amazing to me that Mary’s version is the same pattern. I never would have guessed it in a million years. I think your choice of using the brown fabric for the background was quite inspired. It really set all of the nuances of the pattern and the fabrics in a great light. {{Hugs}} ~smile~ Roseanne

Oh, I like that a lot!

Love everything about this one! I’m soooo into trying different colors for backgrounds especially. (I’ve definitely been keeping my eyes out for some on the clearance racks!). A beautiful finish and I love seeing it hanging there. Any chance you’ll end up putting it on a wall for the season?

Love the name you chose for this one, and the brown! Sounds like it was a fun project to make!
