SAHRR Border 2

Before I show you my SAHRR Border 2 for this week, I just wanted to say thank you to all of you who linked up last week! What fun to see all the Signature Block borders – you are all a very creative bunch! Today Anja is going to take the lead with Border 2. Before I show you mine, however, I want to show you Eva and Angie’s first borders.

Here is Angie’s first border. Angie is having some computer issues and asked if I would post her photo, which I am happy to do.

Using green for the inner part of the Signature Blocks really sets the center block off well, and those little kittens are pretty cute!

Eva is participating with us again this year. Eva’s first SAHRR with her quilt made to remind her of her trip to Africa. This year, Eva is playing with elephants – take a look:

Just a little peek at Eva’s center block of elephants and the start of her first border. She ran into a little problem as she was working on her first border – she ran out of fabric. We all know how frustrating that can be, right? She is hoping to find more, but she wanted us to see how she used the Signature Block to make “hugs and kisses”. This quilt is going to be gifted to a couple of special boys, and she is putting some sweet touches into the quilt for them. I’ll update you on Eva’s progress next week. In the meantime, keep your fingers and toes crossed that she finds more of that fabric!

This week, Anja of Anja Quilts is our host for SAHRR Border 2, so you’ll want to visit her site to get instructions on this week’s border and to link up your posts. This week, Anja asks us to “Use Two Colors” in our borders this week. That’s it! Just choose two colors to work with and make your border.

I decided to pull some red into my second border, so I chose the colors of red and white.

Round Robin quilt in colors of red, blue, yellow, white and green - piecefulthoughts.com

I made the red dashes by sewing two white 1-1/4″ strips to one red 1″ strip, then cutting the red/white strips to 2-1/2″ square. I added white spacer strips between the red/white units and then used red cornerstones. Molly says it reminds her of stitching, so we’ll go with that idea. My quilt now measures 20-1/2″.

Visit the other hosts for the SAHRR for more inspiration on how to use this border in your quilt. Here is the schedule with the links:

Angie’s little kitties are so cute, and that is clever placement for the signature blocks. Eva’s elephants are gorgeous, and how cool are those Xs and Os! I love your red dashes! How refreshing is an instruction to just use colors – it’s like a drink of water between courses.

The white border with the big red stitching looks great! And I also love Angie’s kittens and Eva’s elephant with the hugs and kisses blocks. I have some of that Kaffe Fassett Paper Weight fabric that I’d be happy to send to Eva, but the background looks more olive green than Eva’s. I’ll take a photo of it and send it to you.

Hi there, thank you so much about checking your fabric. I am in contact with some dealers. Its not possible to send .. I am over the ocean … so it will cost too mich money to send and mich more time! But thank you!!!! I am sure I will find, question is how quick.
The next border is super! Thanks for your lovely comment! 🙂

Fun to see what Eva and Angie are working on! Running out of fabric has happened to me, too – that’s always frustrating. I really like your next border, Wendy! It reminds me of one of those Dreamlines design ideas from last year. I wasn’t able to keep up with those, but enjoyed following along. Now I’m thinking about my “two color” border!

This is wonderful, Wendy! It’s great to follow you, Eva and Anja’s SAHRR journey on your site. It appears Eva is finding her ‘voice’ through her African stash of fabric again this year. Very cool.
Your choice in design/color choices continue to compliment that contemporary spin on your GrandMa’s antique block. Love it!

I think the red border looks like hand stitches too and it ties together the whole quilt. It really brings all the colors from the center block together! Great choice for this round.

I love the blocks you are showing….Angies is just adorable with the old fashioned kitty fabric. Eva’s is beautiful – I do hope she can find some extra fabric. I really love the border and cornerstones in round 2. It is so much fun seeing them all!

wow, two solid colors really becomes graphic. That’s a very strong line/image with the red and white. A lesson in graphics and the affects of color. Nice job Wendy. We can create a strong border or temper it with prints.

Love Angie’s kitties! I had that print once upon a time. Ohhh, Eva has the cutest elephants! And doesn’t that Kaffee print go fab with them!!!! Love your giant red sewing stitches around your border, Wendy!!!

Holy moly! Those dashes rock my world. I have to agree with Molly – the dashes to resemble sewing. She’s going to love having this finished piece. Eva’s center block and her elephants are so pretty! And Angie’s signature blocks around those cute kitties are FABULOUS. Great job to all three of you. I can’t wait for next week. {{Hugs}} ~smile~ Roseanne

The elephants are cute! The sweet kittens take me back in time…I made a quilt using those kittens! And your border, Wendy, is genius! 🙂

  • The Morning Latte

Oh my gosh those little retro kitties are ADORABLE! (Gotta show those to my sisters!). Your red dashes are spectacular. What a pop! I’m not sure I’ve ever seen it before (?) but what a simple border with a great affect! Will file that one away.

I love how you are pulling the colors out of the center of your central block. The “stitching” does look like it goes in and out of the fabric. Nice of you to show us the photos of the other participants. I really like the sweet prints in their blocks.

When I saw your border Wendy, I thought of slow stitching, but of course this is not a case like that, but it brings sewing to my mind immediatel. I like the use of solids that you have made. Thanks
